I really do want to take better pics of my makes 😂. This was as good as it got headed out to the airport. I’m calling this my “airport coatigan.” It’s a brushed boiled wool knit from @lafinchfabrics_new I had a really hard time finding exactly the fabric I wanted and I was a little skeptical of this one because I’m very sensitive to wool but it’s SUPER soft and cozy. I pre-shrunk it, and it shrunk A LOT (as expected), which led to having to do some creative pattern layout to squeeze the facings out, which then led to a nap issue 🤦🏻‍♀️. So, because of the nap issue when I pressed the lapel it stretched out REALLY wonky and there was no way to do the top stitching to secure the facing. I had to wet it and air dry it several times and eventually managed to stitch the facing. Because of the facing nap issue I’m choosing to wear it “rumpled” rather than pressed. Overall, I’m happy with it. It’s perfect for travel, cozy with big accessible pockets, very comfortable. I’m still on the lookout for an appropriate fabric (not sure exactly what that fabric is) in a camel color, to make another, maybe slightly more polished “coatigan.” #simplicity8742 #s8742

The Christmas decorations have all finally been taken down and put away. WHEW! What a huge job that was! Why is it always easier to put up the decorations than to take them down and put them away?! Glad that's done because it gave me some time to finally take a pic of one of the last things I sewed in 2021, my new leopard printed sarong dress. I love the pattern that I used, OOP Butterick 3491. No sewjo this weekend, even though I cut out this #coatigan last week. It was a speedy make this afternoon…came together zippity quick! It helps that there were few seams to finish. I did hand sew the hem/front facing/collar. I used a thick knit that seems like a cross between sweatshirt and French terry….anyone know what it’s called? It’s 100% cotton but not very stretchy. I’m freezy lots, and this baby weighs a ton so I know it will keep me snuggly whether I use it for a robe or coat. I got the fabric in the #losangelesfashiondistrict. It’s overdyed cream so has speckles that show through the black. It’s been a bit since I made a pattern from the big 4 but this one might be on repeat. I’m on a bit of a coatigan bender. This one is made with an Alpaca/wool blend from @tessutifabrics purchased about a year ago. I pondered what to make for a long time and even considered just using it as a bedspread as lovely as it is but @shesewsvintage (thank you) red mohair coat inspired me and I squeezed this out of my 2.4 m. Loath as I was to leave any of this insanely nice fabric in a scrap pile I fashioned a cat bed which my little Cloud has taken to nicely. I finished the facing with Tessutis’s wool binding a perfect match.

as I was finishing up this coatigan last night and trying it on in front of the mirror, I said “wow, I think I feel a little fancy!” at the exact same time that @dtb_20 told me I looked like I’d stepped out of an 80s movie. 😑😑 so maybe this is giving #dadcoat vibes, but it’s heavy and warm and perfect for wearing to the dentist, which I did today. pattern = #s8742 fabric = faux camel hair

My cozy wool vest 😍 I was so intimidated to cut into this wool blanket I bought on ebay, but it ended up being a super quick and easy project! I used Simplicity #s8742 View B, eliminated the arm pieces, and took about 3.5 inches off the shoulders so it wouldn’t be too boxy. It was a really easy modification and now I see vest in all of the coat patterns I own ☺️

I’ve been chilled on this 26th Day of Me Made May, so it seemed like the perfect time to show you this cardigan I made a few years ago, featuring a made-from-scratch hammerhead shark appliqué on the back, which I hand sewed on. More recently, I also made the tunic top pictured here. I used Vogue 9299 (#V9299) for the tunic top and Simplicity 8742 (#S8742) for the cardigan. The tunic top is huge at this point and kind of frumpy, but very comfortable so whatever. 😜 The cardigan I made in memory of my Ecuadorian parents, both scuba divers back in the day in Ecuador. I lost them when I was young - my dad when I was 22, my mom when I was a baby, only 17 months old. When I was in grade school, I remember finding my dad’s diving journals and being awestruck by his entries telling of encounters with sharks. Inasmuch as I miss my parents and on some level will never get over the loss of them, I made this sweater as an empowering reminder to myself that I will be okay.
