While the ice dyeing was icing and the eco printing was resting, Julie @consistentlydifferentdesigns took me for a day trip to see the northern Mississippi River and do a little wine tasting in Minnesota. Since I was wearing an unposted me-made, she graciously snapped some photos for me. Thanks, Julie! Struck by vintage pattern nostalgia, I snapped up Simplicity #S9739 a reprint of the apron dress I remember from the ‘70’s, during a $1.99 pattern sale recently. I had a piece of Essex yarn dyed linen in just the right amount for hardly any waste or scraps. The weight is perfect. It’s naturally cool, but not too sheer or delicate. And as a wrap dress, it’s got plenty of coverage if you get a strong gust of wind your way. 🤣 This was a simple sew and would have taken much less time, except that I went a little extra, as I do. If you consider making this, note that the apron portion is a single pattern piece and cut on the crosswise grain of your fabric—it may make a difference to you if your fabric has nap or a one way directional print. I made the following adjustments: 💜Crossed shoulder straps that tie in front rather than the neck straps 💜Two roomy pockets using M8206 rather than the giant front pocket included. 💜Lined the pockets for added durability ‘cuz cell phones are heavy 📱 💜Added single belt loops to each pocket top for the waist ties 💜Upgraded the facing finishing for neater insides & to prevent it from turning inside out; standard understitching & stitch-in-the-ditch at vertical seams 💜Top stitched the back facing down I cut it as long as my fabric would allow #sewingtall which surprisingly was only slightly longer than the shorter length as printed. For reference I’m 5’9” and the finished length from the top of the side seam dart is 35” with a 2.25” hem. My latest make is this simplicity apron dress. Do I feel like I’m naked underneath an apron? Yes. Do I care? No! My brace slides when I wear regular pants and I’m tired of wearing stretch pants. A lot of my other dresses feel a little too fancy or have too much fabric and get in the way when I’m adjusting my brace. I needed a simple house dress and this really hit the mark. It has vintage lace trim and it’s SUPER comfy ❤️ I’m thinking about making another one with this happy plaid fabric. No big modifications needed. I made the top neckline a size m and the rest an xl. Looking at it now I feel like maybe I should have made the top a large. But it’s a small difference and it doesn’t bug me too much and at least the bib doesn’t bubble out. First make in Juneau! Got this fabric on sale at Joann’s and decided to try to make this Simplicity wrap dress (#S9739). It says “super jiffy” on the pattern and I would have to disagree 😆. I made a size L and had to do a handful of mods to get it to fit right. Took in the side a little so it could wrap enough. The pattern is designed to be tied at the neck but it was giving more of an apron vibe than I liked so I decided to add buttons to the straps and attached them to the wrap skirt which I ended up liking the style of more and added security but makes it a little more complicated to put on/take off. This was my first time working with lyocell and I looove the feel of it, it’s so soft. It wasn’t as much of a pain to work with as I thought it might be but this was also a pretty simple design. Anyone interested in making this in that sort of fabric I’d recommend adding interfacing to the facing pieces. The center top of mine stretched out while working with it (even with stay stitching) and now is a little wavy which I think interfacing could have prevented. Honestly, this was not a joyful make haha. I got frustrated having to re-do things multiple times to get the fit right, but that’s part of the process! Not my favorite piece but it’s wicked comfy and I think will look very cute with sweaters layered over in the cooler seasons.
