This outfit is 💯 inspired by @aritanderson and a @ridleylondon dress she wore at the Chelsea Flower Show recently. I hope she doesn’t mind that I copied her! I’ve decided that this can be my very first entry to #magamsewalong . It fits with #magamaroundapril because it’s a pattern hack of @knowmepatterns #me2016 . This wasn’t the pattern I had in mind when I decided to use this #broderieanglaise which I bought last October from @classic.textiles on #goldhawkroad . I was thinking of doing some sort of marriage between #m7948 and #s9454 but I couldn’t seem to get it off the ground. A repeat visit to my pattern stash made me consider the ME2016. So, the bodice and sleeves are pretty much unadulterated (apart from being unlined), but the skirt is my own creation. I was restricted by the border design, therefore unable to cut curved hems or to connect tiers of ruffles. I wanted to retain the raised waistline at the front and to ditch the pockets, this entailed a bit of head scratching, but I got there in the end. 💪 The bottom tier is attached to some lightweight plain cotton, this helped to reduce some of the bulk at the waistline, and meant that my ‘good’ fabric wasn’t wasted by being hidden under the top tier. Photos are brought to you through gritted teeth, and a cocktail of determination and co-codamol 😬. I have a trapped nerve in my neck that’s causing severe pain, numbness and pins and needles down my right arm and into my fingers. 😫 I can’t sew at the moment, can’t ride a horse, can’t drive, can’t have a gin (or 6)😏. Airport delays. Do I need to say more? I’m sitting in Saskatoon airport, we were due to fly to Vancouver at 11.55am, but are now scheduled to leave at 1.30pm. It’s the third notification from @aircanada , so I’m not holding my breath for a 1.30pm take off. There was no other option other than to order a cheeky cocktail 🍹 to compensate for my inconvenience 😉. Thank goodness we have a long stopover before boarding our transatlantic flight home tonight or I’d be sweating buckets by now 😥 I’m entertaining myself (and hopefully you too) by sharing my latest @fabricland.canada binge. There’s a pretty panel/border print which is very ‘me’. It will doubtless give me headaches as I try to work out the pattern placement, but I’ll relish the challenge. I’ve gone totally off piste with the other 4 fabrics - they’re not very ‘me’ at all. They’re so plain! I fell for the lime green linen type as soon as I saw it, my mind isn’t made up, but I think I see a @stylearc #samillicentwrapdress. I bought 2m each of the broderie anglais thinking that a loose tiered dress might suite, possibly another @simplicitymccallsuk #s9454 which turned out well last time once I read the instructions properly 🙄. Time will tell. In the meantime, I’m just sitting here, so I can get on a plane, and then sit in a different airport for a few hours so I can get on another plane. Happy Winter Holidays to all! I’m wearing the #pendletonwool #simplicity9454 dress I made for #magamsewalong2022 #auldaugust. I love this dress. Underlined with an old sheet and paired with my self-drafted #flannelpetticoat and leggings, it’s the essence of winter comfort. . I’ve accessorized it with the holiday scarf I started m January and finished in August, working on it in stages on long car trips and small bits of stolen time. The main fabric is the #twelvedaysofchristmasfabric panel by #lewisandirenefabrics, which I cut and pieced with coordinating fabrics. I used #crazyquiltembroidery around the seams and added lots of #beadedembellishment for some extra bling. . I had just enough of the 12 days fabric left for a little knot bag, but decided against embroidering and beading it too. I was ready to be done with all that and move on to other things 😅 . I hope to wear or display this scarf over Christmas for many years. This year when my grandchildren come to visit, I picture using the scarf to sing the traditional song with them—with gusto! . I had a moment of happy pride this morning as I unpacked my me-mades into the wardrobe at our Airbnb. My poor dresses had been squished into my suitcase for three days, so it was good to finally let them breathe. I enjoyed taking a step back and looking at them hanging there. 😃 We’re back in Canada. We were only here last year, and I really hadn’t expected to be back so soon, but plans change. Saw-bought-sewed, all within a week! Franken-patterned this gorgeous fabric from @afriqueclothingstore into. I was really excited to see that @suestoney, @sewing_in_spain, and @hportemanteau chose the theme of #auldaugust for this month’s #magamsewalong #monthlysewingchallenge. I’d already planned to make a long, wool, tiered cold weather dress with a flannel petticoat, and figured the look I’d envisioned would fit right into #auldaugust 💗 . My planning started with some lovely Pendleton wool fabric I was able to purchase for a song at my #hermanmilleroutlet. I considered several patterns, and settled on #simplicity9454, which had the desired features: a simple design with gathered tiers, a neckline suitable for cool weather, and sleeves I liked. It also looked as though it would be very easy to underline, which I find a necessity for wool garments. . I did very few pattern alterations—just a .5” forward shoulder adjustment and 1” lengthened bodice. . While there was a LOT of gathering in this pattern (even in the sleeve caps), it went together just as I’d hoped. I self drafted the flannel petticoat and love it so much, I think I’ll make an #lbpullover flannel top in a coordinating fabric to get even more use out of it. . I think this outfit really has an “auld” look to it and will be so cozy for cold weather. The first photos are taken by a gorgeous stone house just down the street from where we live in Michigan, three stories high with leaded glass windows and gargoyles! The last two pictures are taken in our condo, built in the original, now renovated South Haven high school, constructed in 1914. Our condo has many original features, including the concrete pillar behind me in the kitchen, wood and cement floors, brick walls, exposed duct work, etc. . It's been a while since I made something from a pattern! Started with unbleached Muslin. I was planning to dye it pink, using avocado pits and then tried Pokeweed. I never got the color to stick. LOOK at that neckline, just LOOK at it! It bares no similarity whatsoever to the picture on the envelope of @simplicitymccallsuk #s9454 🤬 It’s a mess, it puckers and pulls all over the place, it’s a strange shape, and it’s making me a very frustrated dressmaker right now. I couldn’t work out what had gone wrong or how to fix it, so I returned to the very clear instructions, which I had arrogantly glanced at thinking that I knew what I was doing - WRONG 😑 I hand stitched it so neatly, but this afternoon I’ll need to unpick it all and start again 😭. There’s nothing I hate more than having to redo a job, I think I’d rather make a brand new dress from scratch. But otherwise I love the dress for its bright colours and swishiness. So I’m going to swallow hard and get this baby sorted. As my dear hubby said, “you won’t make the same mistake again”.
