Australia/New Zealand Tea Towel and tablecloth skirt.  Got addicted to buying tablecloths and tea towels on ebay last year and have only finished one shirt so far. I wanted to make these into a skirt because I felt bad cutting into the animals.  Flat front waist band and elastic back. I added a drawstring but only after sewing the elastic down at the sides so I had to take it apart and create a channel for the drawstring. The waistband was based on #m8066 but I changed the measurements and the construction. It's patchworked with french seams to keep in clean inside and is hemmed with bias tape to preserve more of the animals. Inspired by tea towel clothes from @pantano.clothing @warble.and.woosh and @selina_sanders I still have a bunch of tea towels grouped by theme to make into things (ireland, recipes, strawberries, train, duck) #upcycled #teatowels

I’ve always been meaning to add a boho skirt to my sewing repertoire. I had a whole bunch of ivory gauze fabric in my stash that I thought would work perfectly for this project. The Mccalls M8066 pattern has just the right silhouette for what I was envisioning for my skirt: light airy gauze tiers with a little bit of lace trim inserts. Dreamy! 😍 Sewing the pattern was easy enough. Sewing with gauze brought some challenges and had my patience tested more than once during the process. More details will be up on the blog soon! 👀 P.S. I made a matching top to go with the skirt. It ended up being a horrible experience, so I nixed it. Instead I paired the skirt with some tops I already had in my closet. Another colonial outfit. This one is a simple gathered skirt. I tapered the side seams out a bit to make it fuller in the bottom. I used another bedsheet for this one. It felt kind of like a muslin. IInternational Men's Mental Health Awareness Month.  So I'm not shy of the fact that I very much despise men as a social construct. (Of course I'm talking about the cis variety, and mostly het) They hinder humanity and changing the world a shitter place - politically.  And they are often ugly.  Yeah yeah there is the "not-all-men" category - do you hear them pushing against patriarchy? do you hear them challenging misogyny? All the passive "good men" benefit from patriarchal violence, because the shit men lowers the bar for them and they don't need to perform excellence. OF COURSE there are expectations. And I am very much aware I am married to one of the few real ones. (Do you know one trick how to spot one? they wouldn't get butthurt over such criticism). The fact I don't need to compromise over the quality of my partners sometimes makes me less loudly critical of the mediocre ones - I don't want to hurt my girl friends feelings; its a harsh world out there alone. Anyway on the pictures you can see the aforementioned specimen modelling a shirt I made for him. The fabric is excellent, it's a deadstock bit I found in Budapest.  @babylon_textile The pattern is the good old #m8066 . But back to men's excellence and men's mental health. I grew up politically in a climate when Muslim men were portrayed as the ultimate enemy of women's rights, LGBT+ rights; scary scary backward brutes. Of course I did a lot of unlearning, with other shit I had to unlearn - and the process is still ongoing. Long flowy skirts are exactly what I need with the unpredictable weather right now. Today the temp hit 76 degrees in southern Cali and my newly made long, floaty skirt was the perfect pick! This is McCalls #m8066 in View D. It’s made from a beautiful black and white floral rayon challis from @fabricmart. I love this challis and have quite a few in my stash from recent purchases with Fabric Mart. The quality is wonderful and I can’t wait to make more skirts and dresses for summer. This skirt pattern is great because you can get the perfect fit with the elastic in the back. I cut a size medium in the front flat waistband and a small in the back because of the elastic. I think next time I will size down to a small in both. There will definitely be a “next time” for this easy skirt pattern! I’m currently B41”, W34.5”, H 45” ▪️ Fabric: Poly/rayon sweater knit from @oursocialfabric ▪️ I took 1” off the shoulder width so the sleeves sit closer to my shoulder vs. the semi drop shoulder look (personal preference) ▪️ I took a total of 5” off the width of the sleeves & cuffs. I did lose some of the lovely sleeve shape but I wanted to be able to roll it up when needed ▪️ Shortened the sleeve cuff length by 1” ▪️ I mistakenly placed my buttons too high but I actually kinda like that the V shape at the bottom hem is more emphasized 😅 ▪️Confession: I hand stitched the perimeter of the pockets because I was too scared to follow the instructions and ultimately stretch the knit out 😩 I really didn’t need to do all that ▪️ Sweater is paired with my recent linen gingham skirt.
