In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, I am sharing my Bomba y Plena inspired look that was featured in the April issue of @sewnmagazine. 🇵🇷 Michelle asked me to make something related to my heritage and I chose to make this set. This is a very traditional style that women wear when dancing Bomba y Plena. I wrote a very personal piece talking about my heritage and why I chose to make this piece. Here is a snippet of my article: I was born in Puerto Rico to a White Puerto Rican man and a Black Dominican woman. When I was four years old, I moved to Boston MA with my mother where I lived most of my life. Growing up, I was a very confused child as far as knowing who and what I was. I was so confused that I used to check off mixed, other, or left it blank on any paper that asked about race. I was always told that I wasn’t Black and I just knew I wasn’t white. I can honestly say, I was confused for much of my adulthood, unfortunately. It wasn’t until I was old enough to be able to do research on my own that I started to understand who I really was. Imagine garden parties with pink bunting , Pimm’s and scones aplenty (cream first and jam on top in Devon!) This little pretty set would do all of those with either heels or sandals. And trousers have the ability to slip into casual everyday with a simple t-shirt too. I love it! 😻 🧵pants are #m7757 made in size S no mods apart from shortening at the end. They are amazing! There are lots of elasticated pants patterns out there but I chose #mccallspatterns as a safe and known brand. I was planning to add a peplum hem but after basting it on I looked like a doughnut 🍩 so it got scrapped. Instead there is bias binding now 😆 P.s. I searched high and low and couldn’t find a ready made blouse pattern that I envisioned - fitted bodice, Peter Pan collar and button up. I saw this orange bedsheet and thought I could sew something up with it. I mean, I had plenty of fabric. Another time I went to the thrift store in search of leather. I purchased a leather trench coat, a leather vest and skirt. Out of those items I made the Etta bag and the Carrie Purse. I still wear all of these items all the time. Day 4 - This year’s Christmas was anything but traditional,🌊✨ We swapped roast dinners for crêpes at the campsite and spent the day visiting roaring waterfalls and catching huge waves.
