(Day 10) This top attracts so many compliments. One day a lady came up and just reached out to feel the fabric: an unusual convo starter. It's another #ScoutWovenTee by @grainlineStudio in Anne Water's "Deluxe Outback" in cotton sateen via @NeridaHansenFabrics 3️⃣ WORE ME-MADE HEAD TO TOE (DAY 6) This is a pyjama set with #B5792 bottoms with a frill added for airconditioning, and yet another #ScoutWovenTee, this time with a matching frill. Inspired by @patternreview community in annual sewing bee. 4️⃣ BLED ON A GARMENT (DAY 8)The double frill on the sleeves, with narrow hem on cotton gauze, was challenging. Love the result, worn near weekly for a couple of years. A little tight now. Worn with RTW black ponte pants, #HarmonyWovenTop by @stylearc has a Japanese print with exxy postage (from US to Oz), a splurge from @stylemakerfabrics 5️⃣ UNSELFISH SEWING Here's luxury pyjamas --- first of my #B5792 makes  --- top & bot -- for a friend in lovely yellow & silver grey soft quilting cotton. 6️⃣ (DAY 7) Wore Tom & Linda Platt's tunic #v1515, cut on the bias, in a cotton linen in a happy toucan print. First time using a rolled hem foot. Paired with black very slim RTW pants/leggings. 7️⃣ PET SAT ON MY PROJECT Montey, the big Boxer/Bull Mastiff rescue dog made a nest out of the sorted laundry piles on the floor, showing good taste by choosing my me-mades from DAYS 1,2,3,5,6 8️⃣. (DAY 9) Wore #M7542 top with tulip sleeves (first time) in teal, brown, white flying cranes print on rayon. Paired with brown trousers for an office day. Same pattern as DAY 2. Here's an update on how a 2yo memade is faring in my wardrobe, for the #WearAreTheyNow challenge by @plurabellchenmakes . This is my only summer pj set, made in Feb 2021. In the hotter 6 months of the year, here in the sub-tropics, if it's not being worn, it's in the laundry. So that makes it a workhorse! I need to make another! This project was #SewnWithButterick. The pyjama pants pattern was #B5792 ... my 17th make from that pattern!! I made lots of Christmas pjs for the whole family. A few months later the #prsewingbee challenge by @patternreview inspired sewists, and myself, to make their own :) The beautiful organic poplin is by @cloud9fabrics, per @spotlightstores. As I made a mistake cutting out the pants, I hacked the pattern, by adding a frill to the front. (little pics::top row, middle right). Serendipity! They are now #sewbreezy in summer, the frill lets in more airflow. DETAILS. This pattern I used my Christmas rotary cutter for the first time (little pics::middle left), which helped keep fuzzies out of my French seams. Yay. Repurposed some owls that I'd bought a decade earlier, with makeup drawn on by my young son --- fabulous pattern weights cum pincushions. (little pics::bottom left). Am still using these techniques, so these pants mark a significant turning point in my sewing technique. Here's what the #prsewingbee run by @patternreview made me do! Round 1 was "Uniquely for me pjs". Everyone's entries are sew amazing, with lovely stories, incredible creativity, and inventive ways of personalising. My pjs came from stash: 2 indie + 1 big4 pattern, in @cloud9fabrics organic cotton poplin. TOP: @grainlinestudio #scouttee, urgently needed as final stop in epic fitting adventure, muslin#5. PANTS: #B5792, well-practiced on 16 family/friends & 1 pair of wearable muslin shorts for me. ADDED: 3" & 7.5" frills to hems of top and pants to "personalise" i.e. camouflage a blooper. Loving the pants - frills cover legs when dashing out with rubbish bins, but accessible to leg rubs (injury-related haha). Loving the top - woven but no twisting nor pokey buttons. PIC2: 1. 1st time cutting out with birthday rotary cutter - so quick! 2&3&4. Gathering, sewing & neatening frills. 5&6. Discovered perfection as rotary cutter removes fuzzies for clean French seams. 7. Oopsie - seam ripper to fix. 8. Finally found use for owls purchased a decade ago on a whim - prefect weights when rotary cutting. 9. Threading elastic with my favourite bodkin. PIC3: Shows label from selvedge.

#bpsewvember2019 | DAY 5 | REPEAT | I'm just in my second year back into sewing after decades of nothing. Fitting, not sewing itself, is the challenge this time round ! Before: I would sew up a Vogue 12 and it would fit (a bit off length). Sew, now, to refine the fit I find myself sewing toiles and multiples --- I like to experiment with fabrics ! ..... This started with highly reviewed #m7542 - simple boxy top with 4 amazing sleeves. I made toile + 1 x for me (pic 3) --- in delicious Cloud 9 organic cotton poplin, which held the pleated sleeve --- and 2 x gifts (pic 5) in no-name cotton poplin. Then discovered ease of tulip sleeves, in drapey rayon challis - perfect for work in humidity (pic 4). .... The repeater bug hit for party tops over spring/summer with Tom & Linda Platt's cowl neck tunic #v1415. Cut on the bias I tried cool linen/cotton mixes, 1 x "papery" (pic2), 1 x buttery (pic 1). ..... Other repeats in last year or so (not shown) are: toile + 2 x Lisette's princess line top #b6183, 4 x pjs (all gifts) using #b5792. Also working on 3rd (incl toile) of Rachel Comey's V1247 skirt and 3rd (incl toile) x Grainline Studio's #Hadleytop. .... I toiled then sewed up 3 more patterns. Only 5 with no repeats at all !! Guess what ?! ALL IN ALL I TOILE &/OR REPEAT 2 OUT OF EVERY 3 NEW PATTERNS !

When a lot of the UK was sweltering under record temperatures in July, I decided that I wanted a light lounge dress/nightie to float about my flat in during hot weather. Thankfully I managed to get this finished in time for this week's heatwave! The pattern I used is @simplicitymccallsuk Butterick 5792 (it's a bit of a mashup of various views from that pattern) and the fabric is a lovely cotton lawn from @likesewamazing - they're the perfect combination and the finished gown is just what I wanted! I realised a few things in compiling this mosaic. Firstly, I don't always photograph gifted makes, so not all special people are represented here!! My favourite boho and prairie dress patterns (nightwear-as-daywear trend). I’ve been making long, colourful dresses for myself for a few years now, so I’m thrilled to think that I was ahead of the curve on the whole “nightwear as daywear” pandemic fashion trend. If you’re interested in making a long, flowing, boho or prairie-inspired dress for yourself, these are some of my favourite patterns for sewing maxi boho dresses. If you like the option of off-the-shoulder, elastic necklines, #Butterick6451 #b6451 is my favourite go-to. I’ve made this pattern a few times now (I’ll feature my makes - which I sewed last summer - in the coming days), and it’s a really quick and easy sew. The more tiers you add, of course, the more gathers you need to make, and the more complex the construction gets. A really popular McCall’s pattern for a long, flowy boho look has been #McCalls7969 #m7969. (It’s been so popular, in fact, that you may have trouble finding a paper copy of it in stock anywhere.) I made this dress once, but it’s definitely in my sewing queue to make again. Butterick also has a couple of different nightgown patterns that you could adapt into maxi day dresses: #Butterick6838 #b6838 and #Butterick5792 #b5792. You could also search through the costume patterns of the major pattern companies; McCall’s has a pioneer dress costume #McCalls7220 #m7220, and Butterick has a sexy historical shift (or under-dress) pattern in #Butterick3906 #b3906. I especially like the sleeves on the latter, with their two elastic bands in each sleeve, creating cascading puffs. Finally, if you’d rather thrift or purchase pre-owned patterns instead of buying new, try looking in thrift stores for old nightgown patterns (I’ve often found nightgown patterns in charity shops). One of my favourite discontinued patterns is #McCalls7230 #m7230, which is a pioneer costume that makes a really great historical shift or nightgown. I’ve made it several times, including the beautiful floral dress that I posted yesterday.

I wanted to upcycle this Claudine Colar and the bottom of an other top already refashioned. So I found this cute piece of cotton fabric and drew some changes on the Butterick pattern B5792: reduce the waist and short the dress. And here is a nice blouse for my teen.
