I have been wanting a cheetah print button down for a few months now, but didn't have the right fabric for it. I did, however, have a cheetah print knit in my stash. Buttonholes don't play well with knits, so I did the next best thing to a button down. I made a zip front body suit with long sleeves and a collar (vintage Simplicity 8880). It was a good call for me, as it looks like a button down, but just with a zip front. I haven't had a bodysuit in years, and it's good to have one again, especially in this style. I really like it! For the closing, I used medium sized sew on snaps. If they don't hold securely, I'm replacing them with the type of snap fasteners that attach with a tool. And instead of sewing a hem at the bottom of the sleeve, I went with the cleaner finish that a cuff gives. I do this with most of my knit long sleeves. The pattern is drafted to have 2 pockets, but I only sewed one. This is a vintage pattern, so the leg finish isn't high cut. I sewed it as is because it doesn't bother me. I've been wanting to wear tucked in tops, but haven't because they look really sloppy on me when they ride up. I'm glad I finally have something that will stay put tucked in. 🙂 I made a white eyelet tiered maxi skirt not too long ago, but I wore it once and gave it away because it felt too boho for me. I wanted another white maxi and decided to make the skirt from McCalls 7386 again. I used a solid white knit. I think this will work for me, but time will tell. That's all for now. I'll be back in a week with more on my self sewn wardrobe. HEADS UP - I had to buy some green tea with roasted rice, a product of Japan, and the shelves were wiped clean at 3 of the 4 stores I went to for the tea. I think someone hoarded once they heard about the Japan tari*fs. You might start seeing em*ty shelves for your impo*ted staples, I don't know. I had a vision of a skirt with velvet on the inside and the outside. Comfort is a big priority for me and this seemed like a little bit of comfortable luxury. I had enough stretch velvet fabric to also make a matching top and I love the combined outfit. I used the #m7386 pattern with the change of making the skirt double sided. It was very easy to follow, although I think it wasn’t necessary to have two back pieces and it would be simpler to just cut the back on the fold. This is the ultimate feel good outfit for an elegant evening out.

If my last post is my going-to-the-grocery-store-during-lockdown-dress then perhaps this one is my checking-the-mailbox dress😉. You gotta do what you gotta do, right😜? The pattern started out as #m7386 but has been tweaked and refined each of the many times I’ve made it. I really do get a lot of mileage out of these dresses — no iron, pop it on, slip into sandals and it works for everything from going to the mailbox to going to a wedding 🤗. The pattern calls for the neckline and armholes to just be turned under but I stepped things up and finished with a satin bias binding. In December 2024, I formulated some general sewing goals for myself, and following them, made these 4 pieces. For Outfit No. 1, my inspiration was loosely taken from a pattern I have in my stash that I didn't want to sew right now, Vogue 1723, a Ralph Lauren design. I love the black and white combos of that pattern! For my outfit, I took the RL turtleneck sleeveless top as the model for my top. What I made is close enough, a funnel neck black ITY sleeveless top. The pattern I used for the top is OOP Butterick 4347, a TNT for me. Because I didn't have to spend time adjusting the pattern, it only took around an hour to finish. This was the first time I sewed the pattern for the elastic waist skirt and was pleasantly surprised to see that it has a loose mermaid silhouette. WHAT! I absolutely love it. It was a quick project that only took around an hour and a half. I'm petite, 5'1," and shortened it to raise the knee point around 2". Wrong move as it ended up being a little too short. To give it a little more length, I just zig zagged the raw edge at the hem. I'm not a sewing perfectionist and it doesn't look bad, so I'll probably just leave it like that. With my extra fabric, I'm going to make a matching cropped sport top. For Outfit No. 2, I finally sewed the denim waistcoat that I cut out last year. Glad it's done. The weather's been cool since I finished it, so I haven't worn it yet. As soon as it warms a little, I'm definitely wearing it. In the pic, I paired it with a vintage Butterick 3046 maxi denim fitted skirt that I also just finished. Maxi denim skirts were trending last year, but I'm ok with being late to the party as I love it. That's what I've sewn so far. Well, that's it for now. I would like to leave you with some words of encouragement, but it's looking very dire right now, and I don't want to be fake, so I'll just say, with all sincerity . . . A super fun sewing project combining the front of @mccallpatterncompany #m7386 with the back and ties (extended) of @patterncouture_ tie back top. My first attempt at pattern hacking, drafting facings, and creating an entirely clean finish along the neck and arm holes! The fabric was mostly scavanged from a hideous, asymmetrical Japanese sewing pattern that I started and then abandoned. It's a gorgeous and soft double knit (I think?) from @lafinchfabrics_new so I am thrilled to make use of it! The 3D thinking involved is such a neat puzzle and when the process works, just the coolest! I sewed the main front piece and the built-in bra together along the neck and arm holes. I traced a back facing, cut two and sewed them to the split back pieces. All of them right sides together. Then, I turned one set of tank straps right side out and fed them over the other set, nesting them with right sides together and raw edges of the shoulder seam matched. I sewed them across that raw edge, turned the inside out straps right side out, and poof! Like magic all raw edges are contained inside! Amazing! I’ve been craving some easy, versatile pieces lately so I decided to make a super simple maxi dress from a gray ITY jersey from @fabricmart. You really can’t beat a project that has 3 overlocked seams. I added 3” at the waist and then lopped off even more than that from the bottom. ⁣ ⁣ The pattern is drafted for a fishtail hem but I was not into it so I evened the front and back and took about 4” out of the hem sweep. I just wanted something I could live in. The bottom hem is raw I just cut it with a rotary cutter. Also could not be bothered with double folding the armhole and neckline so that’s just single folded, zig zagged and trimmed. ⁣ ⁣ My overlocker tension was too loose so all my seams have slipped but I’m choosing to consider it a design detail. ⁣ ⁣ I have always thought ITY is kind of gross (likely due to the fact that it’s usually in some missy border print colorway) but in a solid color it’s actually kinda nice.⁣ ⁣ #m7386 #mccalls7386 #mccallspatterns #fabricmart #sewing #memade #isewmyownclothes #sewistsofinstagram #fashionsewing #imakemyownclothes #ilovetosew #intentionalfashion #slowsewing #sewista #handmadecloset #sewingdiary #thanksimadeit⁣

Calling back memories. I made this dress in 2016. I had bought this beautiful print at Fabricville and I instantly fell in love with it! I cut my fabric on the crosswise grain. I wanted to keep as much of the design print as possible so I modified the top part of the bodice by raising the neckline by 2 1/2". I eliminated the CB seam and cut the pattern piece on fold. I omitted the high/low hem. This is my banana dress I made using #mccalls7386. I finished the neckline and armscyes with seĺf made bias strips.
