Happy sewing Sunday! I love capes! I think one of the best perks of sewing your own wardrobe is that you can make items that are very expensive to purchase but don’t cost you a lot of time or money. Capes fall into this category for me. I rarely see one in retail stores except ones that are very high end and they are super easy to sew and fit. I have made several capes in the 7 years I have been sewing, but this is my first version of #m8029. I made view c with the hood. I perused Instagram and read reviews of the pattern first. I also checked out McCall’s post comparing this pattern to a Louis Vuitton commercial version, so I modeled mine after the longer commercial version. Here is what I did to create this garment - added 8.5 inches to the length - Finished all edges and belt (the pattern instructions call for leaving these raw which is super weird). - I stitched in the ditch to further secure the hood center seam and shoulder seams. - I hand tacked the facing to the opening - I made a size small throughout - I replaced machine buttonholes with blind buttonholes using scraps of ultra suede I had from a previous project. - I used a heavy wool coating from @nancysnotions sale before they went out of business. I have worn this a bunch since and am now considering adding some welt pockets to stash my stuff. For now I love how cozy yet glam this cape is. I sewed a bunch over the holiday break but need to photograph my creations. New make! McCalls M8029 belted cape (View A) in polar fleece. Should be lovely and snuggly for Autumn! It’s a pretty simple make - the difficulties mainly being working with such a thick fabric, and very scant instructions. The edges are left raw, so you need to be careful when cutting out (I wasn’t at first, so lots of time was spent neatening!) Next time I would definitely cut everything out in a single layer, as using pins on such a thick fabric gathers up too much of the bottom layer of fabric and you end up with one layer larger than the other. You can’t use weights and a rotary cutter as it gets clogged up with fleece fluff. I’m also not sure how much the collar and front facing really needed to be interfaced with such thick fabric, but I did it anyway, with a bias-stretch interfacing that kept a certain amount of drape - you don’t want the collar to be stiff. It’s still maybe a little stiffer than it needs to be, given the cosy design. It might have been better to use one that doesn’t fray, though, because of the raw edges. I do really like it, and it will be great when paired with the Adrienne blouse I made, whose sleeves are too billowy for a normal coat! 🧥Cape🧥 The hardest on this pattern it's to find the fabric. I love this faux suede and fur I found at @annsfabricshop . It's perfect for this easy sewing project.The second hardest thing, was the button hole. My first finished project of 2022: @mccallpatterncompany #M8029 Cape and Belt! This is a gift for my mother that my niece and I designed together and had intended to give her for Christmas, but (like a lot of folks this season) illness took over our household (thankfully just the flu). As I’m feeling much better, I finished this up today and am feeling quite pleased with it! I did make a few updates to the instructions(I finished my seams and added bound belt seams) but otherwise it was very easy to make! A lovely afternoon spent mooching round the second hand shops of Magdalen Street with my best beloved. I came away with six dvds (yes I still watch them) and some nice supplies for the sewing stash. After doing a burn test, I’m pretty sure the green is polyester but it’s got a lovely hand & drape, plus it’s surprisingly thick. I had planned on using it for a lining, but it might just get used for a shirt or a dress. I think the red & white fabric is actually wool, I’ll use it to make this cape from McCall’s. My last make of 2021 and it’s my new favorite. I made the Mary J./Louis V. cape coat! It only took pattern @mccallpatterncompany #M8029 and about 1,000 yards of faux leather trim. I am so happy with it and it is soooo toasty. I also made the pants, but earlier this year using #V8909 in a faux leather stretch knit from @girlcharlee. The cape: for those days when you want to wear a blanket, but can’t actually look like you’re wearing a blanket. . It’s cold, and I want to be comfortable. So I whipped up this hooded @simplicitymccallsaustralia #m8029 cape in a cozy wool blend from @darncheapfabrics. It came together quickly, but not mentioned on my pattern is that there is no edge finishing at all! My fabric frays so I used a mix of overlocking and shiny silver bias tape to finish all the seams and edges. And then I added pockets 😉 . I made myself a cape for my sewing super power. bahahaha I’m just joking 😝 Jokes aside, this is my very first cape and I love it. I meant to sew it for early fall but I got caught up in my knitting and I lost track of time. That’s life 🙃 When I saw this pattern back in 2019, I knew I wanted to make it. So I bought the pattern and year over year, it sat in a pile waiting to be made. I’ve thought about this pattern for years but never having the guts to actually make it. It is labeled as a ‘very easy’ pattern but I honestly didn’t think I was ready to make it. It’s a cape where the edges were unfinished and edgestitched, a look I don’t particularly like and it asked for large buttonholes that my automatic buttonhole maker could not make. I’m not going to lie my friends but making button holes without my handy automatic tool was daunting. I was not ready to tackle this or figure out how to finish the raw edges of the cape. But my friends, you’ll never be ‘ready’ for anything. You just have to go for it and that will be the point you’re ‘ready.’ Take it one step at a time and see what happens. No amount of practice will prepare you for all life throws at you. It seems silly that I’m applying this view to my sewing project but really, this needing to be ‘ready’ mindset has stopped me from pursuing a lot of things. For this cape, I’ve learned to make button holes and I’ve practiced it over and over again on scrape fabric before actually making them on my cape and they still came out so wonky. (Just don’t look too closely 🫣) Another mod I’ve made was binding the edges with self made bias tape as my fabric frays. It’s was a process with a few hiccups but still, I love it!
