This. Dress!!! I’m so relieved it’s finally done. This took so much out of me mentally. It was all the hand sewing and then later centre back invisible bias zip almost made me give up but so glad I persisted. It’s the most beautiful fit and I feel so good in this! The neckline is just perfection and how the puff of the sleeves sit on the shoulder head as well as the elevated empire line is deceptively flattering. My actual bust line is lower so it’s all an illusion 👀 which just goes to show how talented Galliano is as a designer. The whole process gave me a lot of insight into how intricate some couture pieces can be despite just being a simple empire dress with puff sleeves. And this fabric (Alex Perry deadstock from @theremnantwarehouse) has such a divine handle. It moves a lot which makes it a pain to keep on the machine due to its weight but an absolute dream for bias pieces! I also bought it in the reverse white colourway but it will be for much later.. haha. Some of you might have followed my ongoing process of making the #v1978 on stories (if not, I’ve pinned it on my highlights - though not quite sure it should be called that 😂) anyway the tldr is - did not managed to get the zip in a satisfactory way on the fully bias, super slippery CB seam. Which is just about the last step. So I’m currently taking a break from it and also my parents are visiting for six weeks so I’m losing my sewing room so it would be a good opportunity to step away from it for a little while. And perhaps later, consider a side zip like so many of you have suggested. Anyway. In my head if it is fully bias then perhaps a version of this can be easily made with knit fabric, right?! I mean, my issue was getting the zip to sit flat, and this problem would be totally eliminated if I used a stretchy knit. Hmm. I sat on this for a week, but it gnawed at me and so I had to make it. I made all the pattern mods on the cutting table (cowboy cutting - it’s the wild west here 😂 mostly shifting the CF/CB lines cutting on the fold) and put most of this together on the serger and it came together very quickly. Also cowboy serging, if that’s a thing. I winged the trimming quite a bit as this fabric has stretchhhh (2x1 rib Reformation deadstock from @wearethefabricstore - the oxblood colourway is still in stock) I’m not sure Galliano quite had this in mind when he designed this, but voila, the #givenchy empire dress in super casual form…. rib knit sewn onto tulle (lol!) and no fit issues. Actually can’t believe I pulled this off.
