Roping my family in on our holiday to help make me an Instagram star results in hideously awkward poses as they scream at me to “stand better” But I am pleased to finally share this modified #M8038 dress absolutely inspired by the two-tone version by @hollydollydarling It’s a size 20 graded down two sizes at the waist, armsyces remastered, deep (slightly too deep) side slits, and I now notice may need a bit of a retrospective sway back adjustment. Made in some scraps of a light pink linen blend from my beloved @rainbowfabrickilburn and a darker pink linen from @minervadotcom This was one of my one-woman sweatshop makes speed sewed on the day of a friend’s engagement party and hastily better fitted the next day, but remains a favourite expression of my love of all things two-tone (more to come!)

My zebra dress served me well at @welshfrocktailscymru on Saturday night 🦓. It’s suffered a little because something rough on my sandals kept catching on my superb hand stitched hem 😬, so I’ll need to take the whole thing down and start again. Could be worse. These professional photos were taken by @pollylovegrove . It was fun to pose against the stunning surroundings of @amgueddfa_ceredigion_museum in #aberystwyth . This post is purely about the dress, although, at some point I will need to collect my thoughts and talk about #welshfrocktailscymru25 . As hostess, I am still in a state of bewilderment about the whole thing, so give me time to digest and make sense of what happened. 🤯🤯🤯 Huge thanks to everyone who paid kind compliments, not only on the dress in general, but on my pattern matching! I worked hard on that on the waistline and centre back, only a room full of dressmakers would notice. 🤩 There’s a slit up the right side seam which allowed for maximum swishing too. 😜 I felt comfortable and secure all evening thanks to some trustworthy undies which allowed me to pin the shoulders to my bra straps. In addition I vandalised a cheap necklace which I used to create a strap to prevent that low low back from slipping east and west. The dress didn’t move all evening. 👍 The combo of the sequin zebra print from @dalston.mill.fabrics and #m8038 feels right. Yes, I paid £30/m, but I love it and am on the look out for another event to wear it. Watch this space. Stupidly there are no good photos, but I wore it with my #mavernludo black sequin cape which I made for Scottish Frocktails, who knew that I’d find another use for it? 😂 Naturally I swung it around my head on the catwalk, I mean why wouldn’t I? 🫣 Lucilla from @clairelloydhair did my up do, and my tacky but perfect nails were done at @divanaildesignaberystwyth . So there it is. Latest make: McCalls #M8038 #LunaMcCalls dress! 💕 The occasion for such a lovely dress was to attend a dear friend @stephsame gorgeous wedding yesterday. I finally used up this Sculpted Double Poly crepe from @blackbirdfabrics that I had in my stash for several years. This poly crepe refused to hold a press, so I just had to let it go. 😅 Lining was a $5/yard poly lining find from the second floor of @stonemountainfabric ! Dress was super simple to make, made a size 18W but had to make a SBA. #newcastlenswfrocktails2024 has been & gone, & a lovely night of meeting fellow sewing enthusiasts, pattern discussion, fabric touching, & general sewing chat was had by all. Thank you so much to the wonderful organisers @newcastlenswfrocktails2024 & sponsors. One stand out of the evening was being able to touch & feel linen viscose blend & see the lovely drape it had in many dresses on the night. This was my first frocktails, & while my initial thoughts were to make something new, that didn't eventuate for a number of reasons: 1. 9 weeks of no air conditioner in one of my hottest summers so far left me exhausted & not in the mood for sewing. 2. Full-time work interrupts the best laid plans 3. I have a wardrobe full of clothes, & the dress above has only been worn once before. So, in the interests of time management & #fashionsustainability, I wore my previously made dress. I’m going to a wedding later this month and decided I wanted to make my own dress. This is McCalls #m8038 in View C. The fabric is a viscose crepe from @moodfabrics. ⁣ ⁣ I made several toiles of this to get the fit of the bodice right. I ended up lowering the apex and splitting the bust dart into two darts to get the right shape. I sized down in the bodice to a 12, graded to a 16 at the waist. I added a little room to the arms since I’ll need to be able to bust a move at the reception. Took a little bit of the curve off the hips since I’m very straight on the sides. Added some length to the skirt, made the back darts a little longer just lots of fiddling which is the great thing about a toile. ⁣ ⁣ I’m happy with the results, first time doing a zipper in a lined dress. First attempt at McCalls #M8038 pattern using a beautiful soft stretch cotton drill (6.5 oz) from @FirecrackerFabrics and I’m loving how it turned out! Mods: - shortened the skirt significantly (>15”) because I ran out of fabric - Bodice shortened 1/2” to sit closer to my natural waist - Back cut down (“self-drafted) bc I didn’t buy a long enough zipper, oops - Armhole cut out along the back 1-2” - Cut out sleeves oversized to the lining fabric bc I didn’t want the pleated option A bunch of learnings: Invisible zippers aren’t as scary as I thought but I need to improve my technique because it shows too much in this first attempt. This pattern is designed around using a lining fabric (which I didn’t buy) and I ended up with a rough attempt at finishing the top edge and sewing under which isn’t nearly as elegant. Next version will be the full length and lining of at least the bodice!

I started at 6:04pm and really had no clue what I was going to make. By 9:11pm the dress was complete. Once I start planning out my sewing projects you won’t be able to tell me a thing!!!!! @mccallpatterncompany McCalls #M8038 hack. First inspired when I saw @hollydollydarling beautiful lace version, & then on careful inspection of the pattern, I was hooked. I planned to use bodice B with a shorter version of skirt A, but with my non standard bodice shape I decided to use my basic bodice block that I developed with @jeanbasdesign, to draft my own bodice (More on that later) & then add it to the skirt. The skirt has a lovely upside down tulip like shape. Fabric is a beautiful silk twill from @wearethefabricstore from a few years ago. It was heavily discounted at the time so I bought lots & have been searching for a project since. It has a lovely hand feel & some favourite colours of mine. Lining is Black Silk Habutai from @tessutifabrics that is just lovely against the skin. I completely over thought the sleeveless lining technique but ended up following the directions that advised hand stitching the armhole. I had no concerns with doing this, but I should have added a stabiliser of some sort, maybe a strip of organza. I also hand prick stitched the armholes & neck edge (as understitching wasn't possible) to keep the lining sitting nicely on the insides. I do feel the underarms & the back neck are just a little high, so I may go back & lower the armhole at least (or I may not 🤷🏼‍♀️) Ultimately, I want a covered belt, but I ran out of time for this, so I made a quick tie belt to wear to a recent event. The lace dress of my dreams 🦀🐚🐙. I’ve never been much of a lace wearer, and then I saw this guipure lace on @fabricgodmother. And oh my god I needed it. THIS was the lace for me. …and then I let it just sit in my sewing room for a couple months because I was too nervous to cut into it 🤪. But as the end of summer approached, I knew I needed to work up the courage while it was still somewhat seasonally appropriate around here. I wanted to keep the silhouette pretty simple to really show off all the creatures in the lace. I used the same pattern as I did for my color blocked gingham dress - #m8038 . The skirt of that pattern is more mermaid shape. For the color blocked version I had straightened the skirt, and for this one I made it more a-line. And then just some minor fit adjustments here and there. Other than that, I just used bias binding around the neck and armholes as well as all inner seams. The pink underneath is a #saltwaterslip , but I’ll post about that on its own a different day. Ive teased it a few times, but I’m pretty freakin happy with how this dressed turned out. I’m usually more of a flowy, loose, gathered skirt silhouette type. But I’ve been into this more fitted and sleek style lately. Pattern is #m8038 . It’s an evening wear pattern, and side seams flares out below the knees. So I straightened it out and added the slits. I also removed the bust darts, because let’s face it, ya girl doesn’t need them. And then of course, added the color blocking. Week 2 of #SewRecreateTheLook challenge hosted by @sosewdressmaking @jenlegg_teescreatives : Fabric and Pattern I’ve bought a dark navy jersey crepe to use as the shell fabric and black cotton jersey for the lining which I found at @moodfabrics . This is my first time attempting to make a dress with lining using stretch fabrics so I’m not sure if cotton jersey is a good idea for the lining. It was quite hard to find a regular lining that has enough stretch and also affordable. The dark navy crepe jersey is thankfully really really dark that i think I can get away with using black fabric as the lining because it was pretty hard to color match with all the considerations in mind.😅 For the pattern, I didn’t really find a knit pattern with the details that I need for this dress, so I bought this McCall’s #M8038 pattern to use as a base for the fitted bodice and skirt shape/length. After researching my inspiration dress for all the construction details, I got a sense of what I would need to modify from the reference pattern. For example I’d need to: *Remove waist seam and add fisheye darts at the front *Reshape the back to be the same as the inspiration dress *Figure out how to make a pattern for the twist detail at the back and how to construct it *Modify/create pattern for cap sleeve Since the reference pattern is for a woven fabric, I’m not sure how it will translate to a knit one. So I’m going to make a muslin in some similar weight knit fabric that I have just so I can see the fit and figure out the how sew all the pieces in a logical order. About this weekend.. celebrating the start of a new life together with the Umoren family. I’m wearing me made #m8038 and husband is wearing @dkocouture

This is my version of a well known British designer dress that I have been fan girling for a while now. Swipe for inspo picture. Thanks to a Xmas voucher from Mr Headless, I purchased this absolutely gorgeous inky-blue viscose cotton velvet from @drapersfabrics in a recent sale. I used McCalls pattern #m8038 as a base but changed and added elements to get this result. I lined it with beautiful Bemberg lining from @hawesandfreer. I spent ALOT of time pfaffing about with the fit, did two muslins, lowered darts, shortened bodice, took it in considerably at various seams. Another pattern has just come out , the Peony dress by Fabric Godmother, and to be honest if I'd seen that first I would have used that as my base. The original inspo design has a very dramatic French dart which I don't have on this, but I would like to play around with dart rotation and give it ago for another version. The thing I Love love love is the pleated sleeves and base frill. I just tried to copy what I saw on the inspo picture. It was time consuming but not difficult. It was only fitting to spend this 115th Founders’ Day of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at home at THE Alabama State University.
