Recreating my Pinterest inspiration pt.2 🥂💎 Feeling expensive without spending all the money. Something a bit more fancier for my wardrobe at such a low price tag! I love the original dress as it is black but has textured fabric which helps it stand out. I knew when I saw my fabric it’d be perfect for this recreation. Although it is not an exact replica it has the textured design against the black which is what drew me to the original dress. I’ve had this vogue pattern for a while now and it’s such a timeless design and a perfect match to the original inspiration. All my supplies for this dress were thrifted from op shops around town. Vogue #V1884 has been getting mixed reviews about fit so I used a thrifted bedsheet instead of my planned brocade. My verdict: bodice needs fitting adjustments I’m not willing to figure out. I made the smallest bodice size 6A graded to 10 at waist down. 6A lists finished bust measurement 34”, which is much too roomy for a fitted bodice with very low back. After construction I added a center front neckline dart, shortened the straps, and called it good enough for a first draft. There won’t be a second draft. I have never gotten more compliments from strangers than this dress at an event with dress code “Todo en Blanco! All white creative, cocktail, costume, boho chic attire”. My favorites were the person who acted as wingman (“Hey, where did you get your dress? My friend thinks it’s amazing and she didn’t want to ask you so I’m doing it”) and the one who insulted me about it (“You MADE it?? And here is a 'colour' photo of my outfit, I wore it so I could check how the length of the skirt is when being worn on uneven ground so it will be ok for Fantasy Forest – I know how the skirt is without the ruffle but with the ruffle I needed to check. Also it meant I could get a tin type photo without any queue, like there will be at Fantasy Forest. The dress and over skirt are made of linen, my stays (the bodice over the dress) and the hat are cotton canvas (so is my bag but it's not visible). Not pictured is the linen belted mantle that I made to wear as a top layer if it’s a bit chilly – I didn’t need it for the day. The dress is a combo of Vogue 9100 and Vogue 1732/8882, the over skirt is self drafted. The stays are Simplicity 8162. The sleeves are also a Simplicity pattern 8506. The hat and Lila (the furry familiar) are both from patterns by CholyKnight on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CholyKnight - the patterns are really well written with photos for each stage of the construction, the hat is very simple but the neck creatures are a bit more complex and they need more specialised parts – including doll armature or wire, to enable the creature to be positioned just as you want. Lila is a shapeshifter who tried to be a cat (used the cat pattern and due to the eyes and the fur she looks more like a koala crossed with a cat). The leash is just a rainbow cord knitted into an icord. The goggles were bought on Etsy. All fabric except the fur was from Minerva the fur was from a local shop, they sold off remnants and I bought it thinking it would be useful. 💒 SELWOOD WEDDING 💒 We attended a beautiful wedding yesterday celebrating Mr & Mrs Selwood 💕 This handmade dress turned out fantastic in the end, but it was a pain to make. I haven't sewn zips in a long time and had forgotten how to do it, I must have unpicked and re-sewn the zip 12 times before I got it right. Then silly me, I forgot to try on the dress properly to make sure the straps were the right length before attaching the lining, so half an hour before we had to leave I had to fold the strap over itself, sew it in place to shorten it. Thankfully I had a blazer cape to hide the straps! I am pleased with the dress in the end, and will go and adjust the straps at a later date. I bought this amazing cotton sateen fabric online with colorful florals on a black background to make a dress for the second wedding. But when the fabric arrived, the background wasn't really a true black (shock horror), it was more like a very dark green, which I knew was going to annoy me. I contemplated finding a new fabric, but eventually had the idea to try overlay it with a black swiss dot mesh fabric from my stash, and loved how that looked! So I basted the mesh to all the pieces before constructing the dress, and with 7 bodice and 3 skirt pieces, that was a LOT of work, especially since the mesh was delicate and had some stretch. I used a wash-away stabilizer and had to redo a couple of pieces when I accidentally ripped the mesh, but we got there in the end! So here is my version of the Vogue #v9100 with a whole lot of adjustments to the bodice for a better fit. This ended up being by far the most time-consuming single garment I've ever made, and I've taken multiple breaks to work on different things throughout the process, but this is the part of making clothes that I find so fulfilling...when you run into an issue, then figure out a way to (in the immortal word of Tim Gunn), "make it work".
