This is another impromptu make. I’m loving making skirts. They so much simpler than shirts etc especially when they have elastic waistbands like this #vogue1871 I had a curious audience for the photo shoot and the usual photo bomber. Such a normal scene for the farming countryside where I live. I decided to line it for modesty in sunshine. I didn’t see the need for a centre front and back seam so cut them on the fold. Pattern: #v1871 Fabric: viscose from @sewingcentrenz I am entering this in the #sewsmallseptember24 challenge hosted by @madswick_studio and @neighborhoodpatterns This shop is a local shop and there are so few non-chain store physical shops to buy fabric from these days. I’m loving the colours in this skirt and I will have to get more of the fabric for a top. Then when worn together it could look like a dress 👗. I think Vogue 1871 is a great pattern as you get a top, shorts and skirt and I think the top, if lengthened, could make a great dress. I have a rare solo weekend which I had originally planned quite a busy, active and social weekend but I’ve been stuck inside with a cold that’s really knocked me around. In attempt to make the most of it, I decided to try out some shorts and make my way through my non-lingerie stash while re-watching the Great British Sewing Bee. This is the shorts view from #V1871 that I bought last summer, made in a cotton/linen blend from @spotlightstores. I bought this fabric because I liked the print but then realised that this yellow although pretty, isn’t my best colour or one that I see much in my wardrobe. Having said that, they be great for the park with my daughter. I made a size 20 based on my measurements but next time, I’d size down quite a bit. I compared the pattern piece to some shorts that fit and you can see just how much difference there is. I also took off maybe 2-3 inches off the leg length. I also have been avoiding my overlocker, part from fear of using it, part because I’m lazy and couldn’t be bothered getting out another machine so I French seamed the pockets and flat felled the crotch. Not perfectly done, but I really like the finishes and like the opportunity to learn. I made another Ribbed Tunic with size 10mm needles and this time a little shorter than the pattern. They knit up quickly and I actually finish the project. The yarn is mega chunky from Knitworld. I sewed up the tunic while on a teams call but then realised I didn’t leave the flap so multi-tasking must be a myth. Taking another #v1871 for a stroll around Hamilton gardens with Japanese English language students Mai and Ayana. The Japanese tend not to like bright colours which is probably why Mai said it was her favourite make so far. Fabric: @ladymcelroy viscose challis from the now closed down @harmerandhuff I can’t remember the name of the fabric. The fabric is so light and floaty but it needed to be lined. I cheated and cut the lining out of a dress I had never worn because it was lighter than the lightest cotton lawn I could find. Pattern: #vogue1871 but changed the pockets to slant pockets and piped the edge. ✂️I also had to take about 3 inches off the width as I didn’t have enough fabric otherwise. According to my Honey, this dress has “pizazz” and a “kick to it” 🤗🤗🤗 With nine different bright florals and yards of white pom-pom trim, he’s not wrong! ☺️ Back in April I participated in the #SewRecreateTheLook challenge (hosted by @JenLegg_teescreatives and @SoSewDressMaking) and I loved the entry from @ByAlissa 🌸🤍🌼 So this is my recreation of a recreation 😁 She did a fabulous job recreating a designer shirt dress (swipe to see). I wanted the bright colored florals and the contrast of the bright white trim, but envisioned it with some tiers so I used #Vogue1871 (a pattern I made and loved before) 🥰 The pieced bodice worked perfectly for showcasing several fabrics. For the skirt tiers, I sewed strips together until I had the widths I needed. Initially the tier lengths were longer ~ I had to unpick the bottoms tier and make both tiers shorter. Okay, back to sewing content! ✂️🧵🪡 I made these #V1871 shorts Saturday night with this beautiful sandwashed rayon which I guess is now called Cupro. I’ve had it in my stash *forever* and it’s just lovely. What is less lovely is how I feel about the shorts. Maybe I should shortened them? I thought they would be too short so I added 2” but now I think that is too long. Paired with the top, I look like a balloon but you know what? 🤫 secret pajamas for the win! 🤫 I may make another pair in some Ankara in my stash, and I really want to make Top A. Make Number 41 was a pair of shorts for vacation. I had some lavender cotton gauze in my stash that was actually the first apparel fabric I ever bought two years ago but the color was too trendy and seemed dated now. I attempted to dye it black with RIT and we landed with a kind of eggplant black purple brown color that works for me! I used a Vogue pattern, cut a size 16. And took about two inches off the length. ⁣ ⁣ I originally hemmed them with bias tape like I’d done with this fabric on an earlier project but it didn’t look great so I cut that off, put in a row of stitching and just frayed the raw edge. This little set here is something I’d been imagining up for awhile and I’m really glad I went ahead and gave it a shot. The vest is McCalls #M6228 which has been cropped because my theory is: have waist, do accentuate. I’m literally shocked at how beautifully it came together - like seriously, it’s a hard one to mess up. The shorts are the new Vogue #V1871 which I have made about 3 times at this point! I did shorten them quite a bit (about 4 or 5 inches) and took in the side seams at about a 1/2 inch. Ok- I was ready for a fun funky day dress! And this is it! #vogue1821 intrigued me- loved the oversized vibe, frayed hem, side pockets and flexibility to layer for added warmth. While in Canada this fall I picked up this great sage green corduroy @fabriclandwest and it was lovely to sew! Mods: none but would downsize at least one if not two sizes next time. Advice: Do not use their pocket instructions- just use the standard method and don’t topstitch! Frayed edge: Their suggestion was to fray the hem. But fraying is tedious if the bottom edge does not run perfectly on the grain. Serendipitously this corduroy had frayed selvedge edges! Worked great as a finished hem and trim on the sleeve bands. Sleeves called for cuffs. I did bands- no need to do extra work when it doesn’t offer a benefit. This is my fun project that has no relationship to a wardrobe “need”. A month back I posted a photo in front of this rose bush. Now here it is again, in full bloom 💛💛💛 I’m wearing a new maxi in another lovely Liberty fabric from my Honey’s Christmas gift. As always when using Liberty Tana Lawn, there was much deliberation! I made this one using a newly released #voguepattern #Vogue1871 🤗🤗🤗 I really love the pieced bodice on this pattern. I started to try to pattern match, but I’m glad I didn’t ~ I think the lines of the bodice show up better like this. lnstead of making a tunic, I lengthen the skirt to a maxi. I had a long narrow remnant left and made the cutest little baby sundress for our sweet Josephine. (Swipe to see!) I used a @BebekinsPatterns “Bree” and I really love the design. The shoulder straps thread into a loop at the back ~ so it’s adjustable and accommodates growth, plus no slipping off little shoulders. 💗 This maxi, in this fabric really makes a statement, so I’m tagging Crystal and Tea ~ @crystalsewsandstuff and @crumpetsteaandsewing ~ for their #sewmaxiformothersday challenge.
