I love a handkerchief hem as I have very very large calves( they were massive as a baby and they still are nearly 50 years on !😩) I bought Vogues V1872 thinking I could lengthen it but on the pattern there was no lengthen/ shorten lines and being new to sewing I wasn’t sure if I could add it in my own so I just did the pattern hoping for the best but I don’t like the length it’s not long enough for me and just sits on my knees so I have bought some lace and seeing if I can add it to the bottom, probably not but I will tack it on and see what it looks like. Andréa McQueen Tuxedo Dress by me. I took this power suit (Salvation Army, $4.50) from 1992 to 2022! My favorite part is the armscye embellishments, which are strips of eyelash lace topped with 100 mini-layer cakes of sequins and seed beads. From afar, the detail is lost and it looks like a harness because of the belt. While that is very on trend, it’s not what I was going for. After buying that sparkly belt buckle, though, how could I not wear it? ✨ . I was inspired by some dresses from some Alexander McQueen Resort Collections that I had found on Pinterest (swipe ➡️ for detail, progress, and inspo pics). I figured out the design for the the gathered and ruffled sleeves from the collection, but I didn’t have the correct shoulder pads to make complete the look, so I switched to the lace idea. I went through 3 or 4 sleeve patterns. The idea of short sleeves on a tuxedo dress really bothered me, so I sacrificed the length of the skirt and went with the traditional two-piece, full-length sleeve. There is a horizontal seam where I attached the length. I wish there was an award for how perfectly I matched the pinstripes! 🎖 Unfortunately, because of wear on the fabric, there is a dark line where the fold of the hem used to be, but c’est la vie. . I drafted the skirt from a pink twill and lace using Vogue 1872. I just removed the wrap section and added a back zipper. . Making a jacket is way more complex than I had realized and I’m proud of my technical accomplishments. The insides of those jacket sleeves and shoulders have this entire hidden structure and reinforcement that I never knew was there. And it was so satisfying to solve the mystery of how to make that fold at the bottom where the lining and the self fabric both have little folded hems that meet and disappear perfectly into the facing.
