Pattern - Vogue 8940 #v8940 Fabric - Balenciaga Virgin Wool Coating from @moodfabrics The story of this coat started very dramatically. After I prepared all my pattern pieces and roughly spread out them over a piece of fabric I’ve got, I realized I might not have enough, and I needed to align the print on top of it. I think I did not pay attention to the fabric width, and definitely forgot to account for print alignment. But nevertheless I’ve made it work. I love working with plaids and prints that require alignment. I always appreciate and admire when plaids are matching (especially all the way across the sleeves). You can only see that in high-end and handmade clothes because it requires precision, skill, time and often more fabric. I’ve decided to interline the coat with cotton flannel because I was aiming for a really warm coat. We did test it out on a freezing windy day and it stood the test. Since the fabric (and my time and effort) is expensive I’ve made a few muslins to perfect the fit. One note on a pattern - lining is drafted the same size as the body of a coat, as a result there is not enough “bagginess” of the lining. I had a problem with the vent in the back hanging right and by leaving the lining loose at the hem and around vent I fixed the issue. Otherwise the pattern is great! Definitely will make a shorter car coat for Dennis in the future using this pattern.

After not feeling the best yesterday, I'm back at this pea coat today. Not my first rodeo, but so many pieces to this, and being a vogue pattern, it's a bit more challenging. #V8940 #voguepatterns

I made this fine gent a coat and hat in exchange for a guest appearance on my Instagram. Bargain! Consider this my brief foray into menswear tailoring and also into #selflesssewing 🤓 Pattern: coat is Vogue 8940 #V8940 - hat is #antlertoque by @tincanknits Modifications: started with a size 40, where the shoulders fit well. I added 2cm width through the chest and midsection, but still needed to reduce overlap while adding buttons, so likely a size 42 would have been a better starting point. 3cm added in length, all at the hem, which also lengthens the vent for a better aesthetic in my opinion. Materials: wool tweed from @fabworksmillshop - my absolute favourite coat fabric! In fact we now have kind of matching coats, as seen in the last photo 🤓 Beautiful ceramic buttons are from @todobunto ! I love how the colours and handmade shape go with the tweed! Back to selfish sewing (and knitting) now 🤓😎 #sewing #knitting #coatmaking

Progress report on Vogue #v8940: Its coming together nicely so far. This wool is beautiful fabric to sew, how come I have never made a coat before? Definitely wont be the last one! ✅ Collars are finished. I used the fusible method of tailoring to steam the collar into shape. I still prefer the hand sewing but I am pressed for time. It’s ok to change things up now and then, hand tailoring is very time consuming. After all most items we buy completely made by machine. ✅Jacket body almost done. Pockets have to be sewn first which is todays task. ✅ Welts are sewn and top stitched. Many layers of thick wool to sew thru but my machine seems to be able to handle it. Thank goodness! ✅ I lost the welt pocket tab piece over time, so I created a new one based on the picture on the pattern cover. I discovered I cut the pocket linings all wonky and hand to recut them all. Never cut when you are sleepy, its not worth it. Lesson learned! Remaining tasks: 🤓Sew back to front 😜Top stitch front seams 😎Assemble lining 🥸Sew interior welt pocket 🎄Hand sew lining in place 🎅Wrap and put under the tree Only one more sewing day! Anyone else working on Christmas projects???

This is it, the final post in my brother's 30th birthday coat journey! The coat was delivered today and I (and my brother) couldn't be happier with how it turned out. As soon as he put it on it looked right, the fit is great, the fabrics look lovely, and the style just works. My brother put his hands straight in the (extra deep) front pockets and that was it. It's a coat that he's hopefully going to get a lot of wear out of, and it actually fits his ridiculously tall frame! I am honestly so proud of this make. It makes me so happy sewing for other people and seeing them so happy to receive a handmade garment. I've offered to make my mum a coat next (why?!) so another challenge awaits! De afgelopen weken werkte ik hard aan de nieuwe winterjas van manlief. Hij moest er even op wachten, want een uitdagend patroon en een suf hoofd na een dag werken gaan niet zo goed samen. Men’s Denim Patchwork Double Breasted Coat I finally figured out a use for the pile old jeans that were too worn to be remain in their current form. In order to minimize the random pieced appearance, I first washed the entire pile of fabric with a black dye. I didn’t use enough to turn it all black, but gave everything a more uniform muted navy tone. I deliberately did not try and even out the dying process to allow variations/striations to occur(hence the vertical stripes visible on some areas), to lean into the patched appearance. -Because I have zero expertise is menswear, I used Vogue Patterns V8940, for basic fit and construction. - I did do a bit of visible mending with some sashiko stitching, but kept it at a minimum. - Welt pockets at the sides - The thread buttonholes were revised to be bound buttonholes, just to add another pieced detail. - A locker loop was added to the interior neckline. - Shoulder pads are hidden inside to give it a clearer structured finish. - The patch on the left sleeve is from Dan’s old army unit. I’m pretty stoked that I was able to use mostly stash materials; the only thing I purchased for this project were the buttons, the dye, and the sewing pattern. I had the day off work so I got to work on the coat lining, and it is done! This is the first time I've done double welt pockets, and while far from perfect, they really add to the professional look of this coat so I'm glad I included them. I also remembered to add in a hanging loop (although hopefully most of the time this will be hung on a proper hanger!) and one of my new handmade by labels. Swipe to see a couple of detail shots.
