It would be a touch dramatic to say that this vest almost killed me. Vest for Liam, bowties for the boys, and pocket squares for the dads are all made out of the most glorious fabric I've ever worked with - a Liberty cotton lawn in the pattern Ciara. The vest: Stitching buttonholes in cars and at family dinner, muslin after muslin, and measuring five times before cutting once. I am so glad that it turned out and I will never ever work with polyester satin lining again in my life. Probably. LOOK HOW GOOD IT LOOKS ON LIAM. The bowties: Came into being during a really lovely afternoon with Elise in her basement sewing studio passing bowties back and forth from ironing board to sewing machine. Todays work in progress: Finishing up this quick tailoring project. This vest is a good way to begin learning tailoring skills without being over whelmed. I’ve added a couple of things to this pattern for my own sewing benefit, but you could simplify it if you wanted to. Additional techniques used: ✅Horse hair canvas, I love the texture and support it gives to the garment, especially since this wool cashmere is so soft it almost lacks structure. ✅Tailor basting with silk thread. The diagonal stitches help to hold the layers of fabric together while you are sewing. The silk thread doesn’t leave marks in the wool after pressing. ✅ pick stitching instead of top stitching. The fabric is quite thick, you could topstitch it but it will be difficult. Instead I will pick stitch by hand along the edge of the garment, I need practice making even stitches so this is a good project. The buttons and buttonholes will be next, and then it’s on to the next project. 😁 #sewing #sewingoroject #diyclothes #v8987

TFW you need to source fabric quickly, so you thrift two shirts that look the same, but you weren’t wearing your glasses and they aren’t the same, so there’s an upside-down chest pocket in the side panel My work wardrobe is mostly inspired by masculine lines, but I love the juxtaposition of these puffy sleeves. I made this shirt in white two years ago and it’s wilted beyond wearability. I’m hoping this one lasts a bit longer. Good morning sewing friends! I am finally back in the groove! The last few days I have been cutting fabric, ordering supplies, and getting ready to create a multitude of projects! First project is another Vogue #v8987, this Mens vest is a quick sew and a great way to practice some of my newly acquired tailoring skills. Fabric will be a lovely black and white Kaufman linen from my stash. I am using hair canvas interfacing, as it’s now my favorite sew in interfacing. Lining is a nice quality vintage acetate from Anthony Bentley, who was a well known menswear designer back in the 1980’s. I made one of these vests last winter in cashmere and it turned out very well. Has anyone else made this pattern? I still don’t have a proper Mens Mannequin for display but you get the idea on the women’s form. Time to get sewing!

Here we go! In no particular order... my #FINISHnine2020 : 1: Gertie's infamous most popular (I think)pattern #b6453 I have to shorten the bodice maybe a half inch, which means I have to take off the skirt and redo the zipper... plus hem. 2: Gertie's #b6217 which was meant to be worn at my son's first birthday party... in September 2017. Just needs the sleeves, buttons, and a hem 3: Gertie's #jiffychemisedress all cut out and not put together at all. I do have to cut the belt piece still, but that's just a rectangle 4: Patterns for Pirates #p4pcrossmyheartcami all cut out for a month or so, but put on hold for Christmas sewing and now it's cold out 5: Gertie's #jiffypopoverdress which even has pins where I want them hem... just haven't done it yet, and I need to finish the bows 6: Gertie's #b6285 wrap top. Cut out for at least a year, just lost my sew jo and never came back to it. Actually, that's a lie, I took it out to mark it once, but decided not to and put it away again 7: a vest for my brother!!! Not even cut out yet because I had been working on fitting his muslin... over a year ago, closer to two now probably. Well, at least I got to practice welt pockets. Maybe it is not super visible, but this project is pretty much a fail in my eyes. Firstly, materials. The interfacing! Definitely the wrong type for this project. Makes the front look all stiff and wrinkly. Then there was the whole construction of attaching the lining to the vest, which felt unnecessarily complicated and was not easy to get right. And then there is the fit. Which is not a good one. I think I will not make this pattern again, there are just too many modifications that would need to be done to fix all the issues. Oh well! I am glad I got around to actually finishing this on-off project, hope the next one will be more joyous. Main fabric is a gabardine, with way too much polyester in the blend for my taste, lining is acetate, which worked out okay. Pattern is Vogue 8987. #v8987 #sewing #handmadewardrobe #sewingformen
