It’s taken a couple of months to reach this point but it now looks like a jacket! After sewing the front and back together and attaching the under collar, I decided I needed to tape the lapel edges. This would’ve been much easier if I’d done it before sewing the zip 🤦🏼‍♀️ Next up was assembling the sleeves and shaping them with gathering stitches and a whole lot of steam. Once inserted and trimmed down, I hand sewed in sleeve heads and shoulder pads (I didn’t take a picture, but these were handmade using some cotton batting and the @closetcorepatterns shoulder pad pattern) for shaping. #V1714 #Tailoring #SelfSewnWardrobe #JacketSewing

It’s finally done!!! I started this maybe the year before last, but then it sat on my table for a long time, and then I lost the upper lining, couldn’t cut more out because I then lost the pattern, but gradually, I’ve been searching for all the bits, but found the pattern, after searching for it specifically, and decided to finally get it done!!! My second leather jacket. Considering how thin and supple the leather is, I was surprised at how stiff it feels. It’ll relax in time, so should be fine. I’m regretting not adding pockets, but I didn’t want to try changing up a pattern when I was making it with leather. I think I’ll make this in a tweed fabric, or something, as it would be cute for a dress jacket! I bought this sheep’s leather off trade me, years ago. It makes great lining for shoes, too. Now I just need to get my stretch leather I bought and make a nice and fitting jacket. It’s usually used for leather leggings but I’d need seams in the knees, even though I’m so short, so will use it for a fitting jacket, instead. Pattern is vogue V1714. It cost me $50 just for the postage of this, which is one of the reasons I was NOT going to let it get lost and go to waste! I love the big collar on it, too! Here’s hoping I have more of that purple suede leather because it would look so cool made into this! This is the #v1714 pattern which I have just finished making with this lovely faux leather which was gifted to me by @minervadotcom This was my first time using this sort of fabric and it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be! There are lots of tips online which were a great help. The pattern was easy to follow and I definitely would make it again. I love the design of this jacket and the asymmetric look it has. Back panels assembled (complete with a @kylieandthemachine label from my advent calendar). I decided to cut the centre back panel as two pieces, on the bias, to give a bit of visual interest. All the seam allowances needed to be secured before I added a back stay. Next up was installing the zipper. This involved two firsts: using a two-way separating zip and shortening a metal zip. #V1714 #Tailoring #SelfSewnWardrobe

The results are in on Vogue #V1714, it’s been a devil of a project but it’s done! Overall I am pleased with the results. The hardest part was definitely the zipper. It doesn’t look complicated but with a full bust adjustment it was very tricky to sew. My fabric choices made things a little difficult too. I sewed the lining in by hand, hand felled all the seams to land exactly where I wanted them to go. It’s not a perfect make but I learned a lot, and it turned out better than the jacket I made last year. After prepping the under collar, I moved on to the angled welt pockets. These aren’t in the original pattern (a jacket with no pockets 😱) so I worked out the placement I wanted on my toile and followed the steps from my go-to book “Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket” It’s always a bit of tense process - cutting a hole in your jacket fronts - but actually really straightforward. #Tailoring #TailoredJacket #WeltPocket #V1714

Work in progress…..Ive gone a bit mad with the color of the lining on this Vogue #V1714 jacket, but it feels like fall and orange seems to fit my mood.🍂🍁🎃🎃🎃 This lining is vintage silk habutai fabric from my stash. Its a bit slippery to work on, but I love how light weight it is, a nice companion to the wool gabardine. 😊 Seam allowances are basted in place. After a quick fitting things are looking pretty good, few adjustments need to be made. I find I prefer to cut the lining from the actual altered garment pieces to be certain I didnt miss any alterations.👻👻👻 Next steps: ✅Cut hair canvas for interfaced pieces ✅Begin padd stitching on the under collar ✅Baste seams together on body of the jacket ✅Baste lining seams together Hoping to make this a quick project, but I find adding delicious details like padd stitching irresistible. It’s #memademay ! This trending hashtag has been on social for a number of years, however I must admit I rarely post much about it. Sometimes its good to look back at our successes, and the failures to see how far we have come. This is one of my favorite Vogue jackets, I remember I thought I could get it done in a few days and in reality it took almost 2 months to sew. 🤣 Lots of little issues with this pattern that were improved with some traditional tailoring techniques and hand sewing. 😀Have you made this one? Since my last post I’ve said goodbye to my jackets guts! First up was adding the upper collar and front facing and giving everything a good press. After hemming the body, I assembled the lining and inserted it by hand, then did the same for the sleeves. The finished jacket! I wore it out for the school run and a coffee date with @ainge_family_elmhurst and can confirm that it is cosy and comfortable. Back in November I decided to start the wool jacket I have been thinking about all year. The original plan was to adapt a denim jacket pattern but then I spotted this big 4 biker jacket whilst Christmas shopping. I hate peplums but a bit of hacking and a toile got me to the boxy shape I wanted. It turned out I didn’t quite have enough of the planned fabric so I bit the bullet and pulled this beautiful teal and lilac herringbone (an Avoca wool from @fabworksmillshop c.2018?) out of my stash, along with some leftover linings. The original pattern uses fusible interfacing but I decided to incorporate some of the tailoring techniques I’ve learned from my last few blazer projects. #V1714 #PatternHacking #Tailoring

Darf ich vorstellen: mein bisher aufwendigstes Projekt - eine Kunstlederjacke. Vor kurzem habe ich euch in meinen Stories bei der Entstehung mitgenommen. Was man darauf nicht sah, war das Fluchen, das viele Auftrennen und Überarbeiten. Aber zum Schluss zählt ja nur das Ergebnis und von dem bin ich absolut begeistert. Die Jacke ist genau so geworden, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Schnitt: V1714 von Vogue Patterns View A @mccallpatterncompany Stoffe: Kunstleder von @stofflounge, Futter Viskose Webware von @pepelinchen Genäht habe ich die Jacken in Größe 12. Sie ist etwas größer, damit ich auch einen Pullover drunter ziehen kann. Die Schultern habe ich, wie immer bei Vogue Patterns, schmaler machen müssen. Die Armlänge und Rückenlänge musste ich ebenfalls um ein paar cm kürzen. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Vogue Patterns und auch dieser Schnitt hat viel Spaß gemacht, auch wenn ich viel geflucht habe. Morning sewing: Its been quite a week. My progress is slow. So many things are going on in my personal life that I havent been able to move forward as I hoped on this project Vogue #v1714 . I have been struggling trying to maintain positive thoughts and attitudes. 😟🧐😒🥺 The thing we sometimes forget is sewing is therapeutic. Spending time in a quite place aline with your thoughts and just focusing on making each stitch better than the last one is good for the mind. Working with our hands makes us feel productive. I can remember times when life felt out if control, and the only thing I could control was the needle and thread in my hands. 🪡🧵🧵🧵 Today I finished adding the stay tape along the front edge of the collar lapel and along the bias seam where the zipper will go. Progress report on my Vogue Jacket #V1714. Nothing about this jacket has been easy. I have taken the seams apart several times, basted again and restitched. I still dont like the zipper over the bust. Its awkward and hard to ease in the fabric in that area. 😬 Whoever decided a zipper should go over the bust was not a large busted woman.🧐 I still have some hand stitching to do along the zipper to get it right.😩 The silk lining I chose to use has been pretty easy to sew, the jacket is almost ready for the lining. 😎Contrast bias has been used inside the lining for a bit of drama. The last step is to stitch the sleeves, add, sleeve heads, and shoulder pads. I gave decided to try a new method for installing sleeves where you machine stitch under the arm and back stitch by hand the sleeve cap to ease it in. This gives more control and should amount to a smoother sleeve cap. We will see. We are almost there! #v1714 #diyclothes #sewingproject #chambraybluessewing
