Despite having made these trousers quite some time ago, they've never actually made it onto the grid whilst worn, and considering how much I wear them, they probably deserve a spot. These are the #v9189 1960 reproduced pattern in a heavyweight linen. They are a go to for work - I love the fabric and they're surprisingly comfortable despite having no stretch. Today featuring a very kitsch teacher t-shirt and my ukulele wall, which is, irritatingly, missing an ukulele. #teacherswhosew #teachersofinstagram #voguepatterns #sewing #sewist #nzsews #handmade #memade #mmootd #sewcialist #linen #slowfashion #vintagepattern #vintage

After struggling with endless toiles for Vintage Vogue #v9189 I needed a quick and easy project to high-five myself over. Lol. This is a pattern I’ve made before but in the pants version. Burda Super Easy 4608. Since I had the pants as a reference guide I didn’t have to toile and I could adjust the size based on what I liked/disliked about the last version (now a bit too small for me). I also hated the side seam pocket which always felt too far back to be accessible so I made my own front hip #patternhack . I’m really happy with how the pockets turned out. All the practice from the Vogue toile gave me a great understanding of how the hip pocket is constructed so I guess it wasn’t all lost time. I made these shorts in orange red cotton chino and they are super comfy. I lowered the waistline a little too much but an easy fix for next time. Going to trial them out for golf and if they work I can easily make a bunch more. #highfive #burda4608 #sewing #sewingproject #sewersofinstagram #shorts #chino

Ça me fait bizarre quand même. #couture #coutureaddict #couturedebutant #jeportecequejecouds #jecoudscequejeporte #jecoudsmagarderobe #diycouture #jecouds #cousette #faitmain #cousumain #patronvogue #vogue #couturevintage #style60s #60sstyle #pantaloncigarette#slowfashion #handmade #imademyclothes #sewing

Sewn: Vintage Vouge pattern #v9189 (pants) Fabric: Cotton drill (Lantana) by Ellie Whittaker for Spotlight. ☘️ First time sewing ‘vintage pattern’ and I had the misconception that they run small. So, I cut a size 14, but it should have been 12. I like that there’s no centre zipper! Also, the crotch is long (so, resize as necessary). This beats store-bought, which is almost always too short for me. I like this versatile pattern with many lengths, with or without belt loops! Too bright. But I like it 💜 #vogue9189 #sgsewing #memade #sewnpants #memadeeveryday

Here’s the #v9189 vintage pants. I love that they have a petite length option for my short legs. You can’t really see from the picture, but there are tiny white hearts all over the pants. . I found this single heart cardigan at @oldnavy and thought it was the perfect pairing for the pants! . I’ve made 3 pairs now and while I love the outcome, I’ve retired the pattern cause it just takes me too much post project alterations. The crotch/rise area tends to be very baggy on me and so it’s a somewhat in depth process to go in and fix it. This isn’t entirely uncommon for me on pants but this pattern has been one of the worse in that department. . Love having these vintage style pants though! Thanks Vogue Patterns! . A closer look at one of my latest makes ☀️ I used two vintage patterns to create this fully me-made outfit First, for the top I used view C of @mccallpatterncompany #m4823 which is in the size 12 and adjusted the pattern to remove the lining (I only had an 80 x 80cm linen tablecloth to work with!) instead, binding all of the raw edges, which took c.3m of bias tape. Really pleased with how this turned out and the inside looks super neat too - swipe to check it out ⏪ For the shorts, I used bull denim from @dalston.mill.fabrics and this vintage Vogue pattern #v9189 which I made in the size 14. Typically I’m a UK 10 so was a bit worried they wouldn’t fit, but they actually turned out perfect without adjustments! Overall, really pleased with the fit and finish of both these projects and will definitely be making more of each next summer (given September is now in sight and Autumn sews are calling 🎃)

Update on Vogue Vintage #v9189 . After making about 5 toiles I decided I was so far from the original that I’d lost all perspective. They were nearly there but some puckering in the front was just too annoying to ignore. I decided to try from scratch with the original pattern this time taking specific body measurements and adjusting the pattern first. Still awful. The first approach, adjusting the 3D version and then transferring the changes to the 2D pattern, is my preferred method and usually successful. However neither approach was working. I decided that this pattern just didn’t suit my body type. I don’t usually wear high waisted pants or shorts, in fact I hate them. I usually wear below the belly button. I think it’s important to accept that some things just aren’t always going to suit everyone. Learning your body and what looks good is what pattern adjustment is all about, and most important feeling good. So this pattern goes back in the box for now. On to some lower waisted patterns to test out the theory. #patterns #sewing #toile #highwaisted #bodytype #fittofeelgood #voguepatterns #voguevintage

Small progress - darts are stitched and not pinned and everything is cut to the correct length. I’ve had a baby and am 4kg lighter than when I first cut these out so I definitely need some more fine tuning of fit. I have a low seat (already made a #lowseatadjustment before cutting) so I think I need to make the back darts longer - getting some pouf right below them. I also have a short front rise and long back rise. Baby is both teething and in a growth spurt while big kid is back in school online. Sewing time is minimal and eked out. #v9189 #sewing #shorts #voguepatterns #momswhosew #postbabybody #sewingadjustments #sewingwithkids

I’m trying to build up more sensible and classy items in my wardrobe that I’ll want to wear for longer, but am struggling to find the perfect tailored trews 👖 These are #v9189 and a pretty good shout - I like the rise and the slash pockets but think I want more details like back welt pockets and maybe a fly front. I unpicked the front darts into pleats as they angled a bit weirdly and didn’t look right, but I’d like to make them more of a feature. The closet core #sashatrousers look good but seem quite a low rise? Same with the #papercutguisepants. Any recommendations would be most welcome!! #handmadewardrobe #sewingtrousers #slowfashion #memademay #vintagevogue

These were interesting. A pair of #v9189 shorts - a reproduced 1960 Vogue pattern in the canary gingham linen from #wearethefabricstore I love a good #honestpatternreview so here goes: they're a basic pattern, but had a few niggly bits that took me a little while to work through - unsurprisingly for my first pair of fitted bottoms. The instructions for the pockets and side seams were a bit confusing but I muddled through and ended up with something okay in the end. If you watch my stories, you know I made a mountain out of the molehill of matching the gingham, but I'm pretty pleased with how well the print lined up. Not perfect, but I'll take it for a first attempt. The pockets gape a little with wear, so I think I might have brought them in too much. I brought in the seam allowance at the waist at the centre front and back, tapering out to the regular allowance at the hip. I've had some good suggestions so I might try something to help them sit better. I also extended the darts. The front crotch still isn't quite right either. In any case, I am happy to wear them, and I will definitely be trying another pair! If you are like me, maybe you shy away from sewing pants because the thought of having to fit them is a daunting task. Well have no fear! Vogue #v9189 is here to make it a little easier. This is a reprint of a pattern from 1960 that includes four lengths and three heights (tall, average, and petite) so again, they have done most of the hard work for you! They feature a side zip AND pockets, as well as the option for belt carrier loops or not. I have made these a before in a cotton, but I have been wanting to try them in denim because I love the fit so much, so I just went for it! To make them more jean-like, I traced out a back pocket shape and added them to the back before sewing the inner leg seam together. I also did some contrasting topstitching on the side seams and waistband. Because I love a theme, and they had a late 60’s vibe to them, I also made a Butterick #b6684 blouse in a poly silk fabric I found in a clearance bin and couldn’t pass up because of the striking print. Next time, I will probably choose a fabric that is less fussy as it was not the easiest to work with but it features this really fun fold over collar that extends into a long tie front that you can do up in a bow. The pattern has a couple other variations that I’m excited to try too! How would you wear it? #McCallsPatterns #sewingpatterns #ButterickPatterns #Butterick #shirtpatterns #pantspatterns #NationalSewingMonth #takeover

Just finished these Vintage Vogue #v9189 view B shorts. I really like these but there is a bit of pouching in the front and the thighs are a touch snug. Maybe they didn’t do as many squats in the 60’s. I really liked the zipper method. I will definitely make more and tweak the fit. #iamjoypattern has become a favorite, now I just need to hem it so I don’t have to tuck it in. I think it is actually the fabric I’m in love with, such a nice Rayon from #moodfabrics.

🍅Tomatoes on Tour 🍅 Before my holiday to Italy I did a last min order of a few fabrics from @fabricgodmother Le weekend collection to add some final pieces to my holiday wardrobe. I bought 0.5m of tomato red activewear fabric which was enough to make @elbe_textiles Weiland tank which I LOVE - big fan of this pattern and the fit. I made a size C which fits nicely, though I could be tempted to try the size up next time for comparison. For the shorts, I had 1m of the stretch denim tomato fabric to work with and opted to make a pair of #v9189 vintage shorts by Vogue which I’ve made before in a size 14 and they were a tad tight (as a W28” the sizing seems off!) so I decided to add a bit of ease in this time. I did also make a bunch of other mods so I shall list them out… 🍅 Added 1/4” to each side to add 1” each overall 🍅Moved the side zip to the front using the Adams Pant by Daughter Judy pattern pieces and instructions 🍅Increased the pocket slant to make them bigger and more of a feature (I started the pockets after the second dart on each side for reference) 🍅Deepened the pockets by lengthening the pattern pieces After all of these changes, and despite having made these before, I found they were 1-2” too big for me, which was annoying as I literally added this ease in 😩 I think it may have been the difference between bull denim (my last pair) and this lighter denim with a slight stretch to it. I couldn’t bear to unpick / literally didn’t have time, so decided to slide some elastic through the skinny waistband to cinch in that excess and in fairness it worked pretty well! They fit much better and there’s stretch for all the Italian food 🍝 P.S. If you like sewing stretch but don’t like the zig zag stitch then I’d definitely recommend looking at other options on your machine (see last pic) or grabbing some Maraflex thread! #sewing #fabricgodmother #fabricgodmotherfabrics #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewingblogger #sewingblog #weilandtank #elbetextiles #summersewing #italyoutfit #memadewardrobe #memadeeveryday #holidaysewing #vacationsewing #sewingpatternreview

I am totally crazy about these little shorts. Made from a thrifted Pottery Barn bedsheet I found a few years ago that I just couldn't resist because of the 60s feel of the pattern. So I used it to make a cute, casual dress with a coordinating waist tie (swipe to the end), and then these shorts using a vintage pattern from 1960 (v9189 in view A, size 12 tall). The instructions were pretty sparse so it was perhaps not the best choice for my first ever pair of non-pull-on bottoms, especially given the side pocket and zip situation and my desire to incorporate piping; but after much wrestling, seam ripping, and re-stitching, I think they turned out pretty well! Things I would do differently in the future? Probably would use a fabric with more drape so the darts lay nicer (and may toy with doing pleats instead of darts somehow for a more classic trouser feel?), I'd use a zipper that matched the pocket lining but this was what I had on hand, and would like to make them in the ankle-length version for work. I think they'd be so cute in a drapey brown fabric or linen with a blousy white button down. #v9189 #voguesewingpatterns #vintagevogue #vintagesewing #isewmyownclothes #sewsewsew #sewistsofinstagram #sewsustainably #slowfashion

When it comes to #PantsFitting I frequently get the feeling that sewers are looking for a magic bullet; those couple of alternations that can reliably do the trick, the unicorn crotch curve that is the only curve one needs, the block that can be used to redraft etc. The hope behind this search for help is understandable because too often we get bogged down by fit which is discouraging, never mind the fact that the adjustments come with names that are not body neutral ***** The #TopDownCenterOut method is not magic but it is straightforward and I believe helps sewers to appreciate the role that the pattern and fabric play in mapping the design onto the body. ***** This project arose from my recent talk hosted by @lisacneel at TwinsNNeedles where we demonstrated the #TopDownCenterOut method on a live model (thank you @stelsabells!). The model selected the pattern and fabric. I prepared the toile and guided the model through the fitting process during the talk, then it was her turn to turn the fitted toile into a final garment. Comparing the final pattern with the original (image 4) it is obvious that the waist of the sewer is larger than the waist of the pattern but what body issues, fitting book recommendations explain the other changes which are significant? Overall, they cannot and this is the magic of the #TopDownCenterOut method, it is an antidote to the body part adjustments approach. It gets you where you want to go, to a garment that replicates the style promise of the original, fitted to your unique body with only 1 toile (image 8). ***** Image descriptions: 1. Final garment back view 2. Final garment front view 3. Vintage S3257 pattern envelope ca. 1957 4. Main pattern pieces for pant (straight 1.25” wide waistband not shown) 5. Pattern preparation for #TopDownCenterOut fitting 6. Fitted pattern modifications compared to original pattern, also new waistband ¾ inch wide 7. Fabric used for pattern, a stiff home dec fabric from 1985 that was stiff even after washing 8. The “look” of the design, is the outcome after fitting true to style? 9. Finished this #newlook6472 blouse this morning. This is one of my favourite patterns, and I have made a few versions using lightweight fabric (including tumbled cotton). But, I wanted to make a version using a heavier weight fabric for autumn/ winter. I did wonder if the gathering would work with a heavier weight brushed cotton, but it looks fine to me. I made version C, but shortened the bodice by 1 inch, and cut the bodice to the length of version D. I had bought the fabric earlier in the year, for a dress I think, but it will get more wear as a blouse. I much prefer the blouse tucked in, but these #v9189 trousers that I made last year are a bit tight ATM!! 😂😂😂 For creating the gathers at the neck, the pattern indicates using a tissue copy of the neck band, pulling up the gathers, then sewing through tissue. The tissue is then pulled off once the gathering has been secured. Works well as an instruction. I made French seams, although they are not part of the design. Because of the French seams, I did have a problem working out how to finish the edges on the slash at the wrists. So, just did the best I could!!! The trousers are in fact navy. Not sure why they look purple in the photos! It's brighter than I thought it would be today, so not great for taking photos of garments! ☀️☀️☀️ #sewistsofinstagram #sewingcommunity #sewover50tops #sewover60 #sewover50 #walessews #northwalessews #sewingformysanity #imakemyownclothes

So I’ve basically failed the first few days of #memademay2021 even missing some major events like May the Fourth and Revenge of the Fifth. I’m actually a huge Star Wars nerd and the debates in our house over this subject can get quite heated! 😂 I never seem to be able to have anything made in time, despite having plenty of themed fabric and even a vintage Empire Strikes Back sheet set to make something out of but I think I’m just looking for just the right thing. It’s been like, three years though...so instead, here is my latest make- a pair of @mccallpatterncompany #voguepatterns #v9189 pants in “lightsaber” blue leopard. Does that count? They are my very favorite pattern for pants and I’m planning to make many pairs of shorts from them this summer. #mmmay2021 #handmadewithjoann. 👖Pattern details: Cut in the petite version in a size 18 / shortened the front along the line about 3/4” / shortened the hem to hit at my ankle / underlined front and back pieces only in muslin since it’s made of quilting cotton

Sewing for La Dolce Vita 🍋 Ahead of my Italian getaway I sewed up one of my all time fave pattern hacks in this lovely @fabricgodmother linen: the @byhandlondon Flora dress but as a bodice only. (I use the size 10 for reference - measurements in my bio). It’s a super easy hack and uses under 1/2m of fabric: cut all of the pieces as normal but add an inch on to the back pieces. Interface this inch and iron over to create a nice stable button placket so you can get the top on and off without a zip! For this version I raised the neckline slightly and opted to bind the neckline and armholes (as opposed to line the bodice). I also decided to add my new fave trick of adding ric rac to the hems to create a scalloped edge, though I will say this works neatest when encased in a lining or bias bind as opposed to tacked on top! Either way this top was a winner and perfect for hot days in the Italian sunshine ☀️ Shorts: Hacked #v9189 details in previous post! #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewing #sewingproject #sewingblog #sewingblogger #bhl #byhandlondon #bhlflora #patternhack #patternhacking #scrapbusting #scrapbuster #memadewardrobe #summersewing #holidaysewing #fabricgodmother

Here's what I loved about this #vogue pattern -- it offers separate pattern pieces for petite, average, and tall bodies. Pattern adjustment isn't easy (I'm 5'0, so I always have to, at least, hem). Corduroy joy! My own personal trouser season continues with #v9189 - a reissued vintage pattern. Love the shape of these, and the lapped zip. Feel about the fabric the same way dogs feel about fox sh*t. (If you don't have foxes where you are, this means I want to rub it all over my body and then run excitedly towards people so they can admire my achievements). Am NOT IMPRESSED by the tiny 1960s pockets. Obviously these are trousers so we went on a long fitting journey together, with several stopovers in The Pile Of Doom. The quality of my notes is variable. I can tell you that I sewed a size 16, grading to an 18 at the hips only. I know that I lengthened the rise by a 1/4", and the legs by 2". I know that next time would do 3" for the legs ( #sewingtall problems). After that, things become hazy. My scrawlings suggest I might have dicked around with the crotch hook? I know I increased the size of all the darts, and that I took a wedge from the CB (and CF?). How much I took, and what it took from me, I cannot say. The waistband is now 12cm shorter than the pattern piece. It is, in fact, too short. However we can't go back. The fit everywhere else is good, despite the 🍑 wrinkles (suggestions welcome! ). I wear these often. They are still fastened with a safety pin because my machine hates button holes. I will add a hook and bar at some point soon. Reading this back makes me wonder why I don't start toileing my trousers, but really, where would be the fun in that? #IMakeMyOwnClothes #LondonSews #MillennialSewing #SewVintage #SewTall #HandmadeWardrobe #VoguePatterns #SewVintageSeptember

I would probably stay at home over going out, but the cupboards are getting a bit bare, so out I have to go... At least going out gives me an excuse to get some tidy clothes on. For #memademay2021 day 13, I am wearing a #newlook6472 blouse version C. Really like this pattern. Plus #v9189 trousers. The blouse is made from a lovely soft tumbled cotton bought @abakhan_mostyn last September. It's very lightweight, but surprisingly warm too. Have included a photo of the button placket detail on the blouse. Anyway, while taking these photos I could hear a grasshopper warbler in the field. Have included a photo of a Reed bunting. Had my first vaccine this lunchtime! Hurray! Here is my #memade outfit! I made the top about 4 / 5 years ago now, with fabric I inherited from my dear late mother's collection. Not sure what the fabric is, it feels like a cotton/ linen mix. But it has been well worn, and has prob shrunk! I made the trousers last summer. I really like both of these patterns. I actually washed my hair in honour of getting the vaccine!. I literally hadn't washed it for months (tmi?). I was trying out 'no poo', plus I really dislike washing my hair...but it feels so much better for a wash. I don't think my hair has been this long since I was in school (when Noah was a boy...!). I also got myself some post vaccine treats...lucky me!! I am a real fusser ( I think this shows in the photo, which was taken at home before I went!). The staff at the surgery were so kind. So thanks to all NHS staff, volunteers, and those volunteers (including my eldest son) who took part in the vaccine trials. We are so lucky to get the vaccine. Finished this #mmottoline jacket this pm, using a heavy weight charcoal denim I bought at @abakhan_mostyn on Thursday. I am pleased with elements of the make, such as the top stitching using strong #guttermanthread, I like the collar, the patch pockets, and the fit overall ( I made a 12). It looks ok I think, but...I have bodged bits of it. The first problem was the vents at the sides. I couldn't work out how to do these...so bodge no 1 So was frustrated, and didn't bother to finish the raw edges of the seems...can go back and do something to them by hand... I then I stitched the sleeve sections together in the wrong order, over stitched them with 2 rows of over stitching, THEN found out my mistake. I unpicked, and re - stitched. Sort of bodge no 2 But my main mistake was with the cuffs. I had cut out the vent version of the sleeves. But cos I couldn't understand how to do the vents on the body, I obviously didn't want to go for vents on the sleeves. BUT there is a difference in the two versions of the sleeves. So my version has v narrow openings at the wrists...I do have small hands so I have probably just about got away with it. But it did mean the cuffs didn't turn up correctly. So bodge no 3 Oh well... Not really that bothered about the jacket TBH it looks ok, and feels ok. But having a down day generally. I think it shows in my photos. Finished this jacket on Sunday. A wearable toile. Have been feeling c**p with depression/anxiety, but do feel somewhat better today. Have actually done some housework. So thought I could now do some dressing up! I reduced the width of the shoulders. Have cut out the next version of this jacket, and have cut the width of the bodice a bit bigger. Now I am not so sure.... Used some random fabric from my stash for the lining. Oh yes - the button alignment on the jacket isn't quite right. Hopefully i can improve this on the next version...😁😁😁 While taking these photos I could hear the cuckoo calling. #sewover50 #sewover60 #sewistsofinstagram #dressmakersofinstagram #walessews #northwalessews #memadewardrobe #sewingcommunity #sewingformysanity #v9189 #newlook6472 #b5235

Have had a good two weeks holiday, especially seeing our two sons and their Lovely partners ♥️♥️♥️. Was v keen to get back to my sewing machine 😁😁😁 Am pleased with with this @merchantandmills #thetrapezedress using mixed linen bought at @abakhan_mostyn and some nice buttons I had in my collection. I made a size 12. The pattern is for a dress, but I hacked to create a top. I used the 'lengthen or shorten here' line on the pattern as a place to cut for a top version. The skirt part of the dress is v flared, thus cutting the hem of the top in a straight line distorted the edge. I transferred the curved shape of the original dress hem, to the hem of the top. This worked, and the hem now sits much better. I am pleased with this make. The trousers are #v9189 that I made last year. #sewistsofinstagram #sewover60 #sewingformysanity #sewover50 #sew #sewingformysanity #walessews #northwalessews #imakemyownclothes

Have you ever seen such a long rise? Definitely breaking a record for me haha. I have struggled through this 1960 reproduced #v9189 pattern three times now, and I said yesterday I wouldn't suffer through it again any time soon... There were a series of frustrations, I have to say. But actually, I am really quite pleased with them, so it might be sooner than I thought. . . . . #vintagepattern #v9189 #voguepatterns #handmade #sewing #nzsews #sewcialist #sewistsofinstagram #linen #slowfashion #sustainablefashion #sustainableliving
