Day 4 coming in hot of #memademay2024 This is the second iteration of the Vogue #v1643 hacked to dupe a reformation dress. It is a very frequent flyer at work, and also for play. I redrafted it to have a center front and center back seam, removed the side dart and rotated it to the fisheye dart and to the center front, and lowered the neckline accordingly. Topstitching to highlight the seams and fisheye darts on front and back, with a wide hem make it that little bit special. Fabric is bottom weight cotton with a small Lycra percentage, from @firecrackerfabrics and it launders a little weirdly but the feel is 10/10 and I love the slightly polished look for this dress.

Oak trees mean a lot to my family so I played with adding an emblem to the breast patch pocket on a red wool jacket I'm making. This was free hand machine embroidered, then hand appliqued to the fabric. My first test - need to figure out how to press that will into shape better! I expect it'll need a lot more steam.... Can't make up my mind whether this will go on the final thing. It's a Gucci style jacket with a grosgrain trim - #V1643.

Just in time to get to wear it this season! I made a blazer from very exciting fabric that I got in Paris at @malhiakent! The pattern base is Vogue #v1643 but I made a some changes. I took the darts out so it is more oversized, added patch pockets, and did the collar/binding differently. I also widened the bicep area so it is better for biking in 🚴‍♀️! This jacket is my second make from a pattern but it looks so different from my first make ➡️ to the last photo to see. This is Vogue 1643 again in a suiting blend which was a loose weave. With this loose weave in mind, I interfaced every piece. My first jacket was big so I went down a size, good in theory until you interface each piece and my fabric shrunk some. This is now a cardigan, which for summer I love, so it was a happy accident. This jacket was cut in the lengthen/shorten line for a cropped style and 3/4 sleeve. In general, I found the instructions for #v1643 good enough to wind up with a skirt that matches the pattern photo and line drawing. But there were a few places where I could have used more help.⁣ ⁣ The first was in how to mark all the pleats. I ultimately went with thread tracing, but would have liked suggestions.⁣ ⁣ The second place where more direction would have been helpful was in which direction do you press the seam allowance when sewing the side panels to the front panel. ⁣ ⁣ When they're flat, they're symmetrical, but once you put the pleats in, they are not. I pressed both sides together, but one of the sides was lumpy at the hem. I think that side should have been pressed open. ⁣ ⁣ The third place was in how to finish the seams inside of the pleats. There's an L-shaped edge on the inside of each one, and I spent a long time agonizing over it. I wanted to add as little bulk as possible, while still securing the raw edges, because that's the part of the skirt that rubs up against your body while wearing it. ⁣ ⁣ I ultimately sewed the pleats, and then used the overcast stitch on my sewing machine to finish those edges together. ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ #handmadewardrobe #memade #sewing #handmadefashion #imakemyownclothes #isewmyownclothes #makersgonnamake #memadewardrobe #sewersofinstagram #homesewn

Vogue V1643 skirt made with a wool/viscose blend twill suiting, silk satin ribbon and vintage Gucci button. I loved this pattern! The fabric was a challenge to find but @moodfabrics came through for me (thank you Mood!). The viscose blend is a lower cost silk substitute and makes it much more affordable than 100% wool suiting, which is incredibly expensive. I try to buy fabric based on what I would be willing to pay from a store for the final product. If I’m not willing to pay it for the finished item, I shouldn’t spend that much on the fabric (I’ll admit I am guilty of doing that if I fall in love with a fabric but try to avoid it!). My favorite fabric to sew with in the fall and winter is definitely tweed. I love finding and collecting different colors and textures and playing with trim and buttons. When I saw this tweed from @minervadotcom I knew it would make the most beautiful jacket and dress. I’ve shared a peek of my dress (which I’ll share more of later) but here is the jacket I made using #v1643 from Vogue. It was a deviation from my usual jacket preference, which is waist length and I quite like how it turned out. I love that I can style it casually like I have here, as well as over top of a simple black dress for something more fancy. When I took out my basting at the end, you can definitely see the holes from the stitching.
