Realised I never shared a picture of my Big Birthday Dress, so behold: here is a picture of my Big Birthday Dress™️ This is the dress I made for my 30th birthday (😱) about a month or so ago. I used the Vogue 1783 pattern, in this supremely gorgeous @ladymcelroyfabrics cotton lawn from @minervadotcom. I'd been dithering over this fabric for absolutely ages, and I'm so glad I finally went "screw it" and bought some because I couldn't be happier with the finished dress ✨ In terms of the pattern itself, the key takeaways are: a whopping 6 metres of fabric (which is a nightmare to manage in a small space), 13 covered buttons (my favourite thing to make), princess seams (also my favourite), and a very full pleated skirt (which is nowhere near as much of a headache to construct as it first seems from reading the pattern). Some of the pattern instructions are a little sparse, which I think is pretty typical from one of the Big 4, but the construction was more manageable than I was expecting. The biggest issue I came up against was the whole 6-metres-of-fabric-is-a-lot-of-fabric thing, especially with those princess seams running the full length of the dress, but dealing with that was totally worth it for the end product 🙌 #sewing #sewist #handmade #handcrafted #slowfashion #vogue1783 #v1783 #ladymcelroy #ladymcelroyfabric

Recently I lost someone very special to me - my Nan, who was also my biggest fan. I knew I needed to make something special to honour her and say goodbye. This dress perfectly encapsulates that for me. I love so much about this dress, all the details make it really special. Yes, it's a repeat of #v1783 because I've worn it twice a week since I made it. I didn't make all those pattern adjustments to only make it once. The only change this time was leaving the sleeves as per the pattern. The wolves are bigger than I expected but I'm owning them. Poor old Suns is the only one in the house with a uterus these days and unfortunately came into season this morning, so I bet she can sympathise with their mood. Still posing like a legend though, because she loves the snacks that come along with it. Vogue 1783, what an adventure. I toiled this a couple of weeks ago and the fit was so bad that I nearly threw the whole pattern out a window. I had such high hopes. Using 6 metres of fabric (or in this case, an entire king sheet) hurts very, very much when the finished product is so average. I picked the size 20 based off the finished measurements and it came out too big. The 'drop shoulder' seam was halfway to my elbow. Now, the back of the pattern describes it as fitted through the bust and I guess that's where the fitted part ends. The model on the envelope tells a different story though, as usual. ANYWAY. I sized down to a 16, shortened it an inch at the waist, took more off the shoulder width of each piece, made the collar and stand smaller, took it in an inch more at the waist and shortened the hem by an inch too. All adjustments made while sobbing my way through the last eps of One Day. I don't know what possessed me to give it another go, but I'm so glad I did because this is my new favourite dress and I'm definitely going to make another (when I can find more linen on sale somewhere). I squidged this out of 5 metres, mostly because it's block colour and I didn't make the belt. BTW the method of construction is a bit how ya goin', so I did it my way. I don't love how the backs of the pleats kind of flap around, but there's no waist seam to anchor them and I don't want to ruin the clean finish by stitching them down. So there you go, redemption. I don't think I've ever gone from hate to love like this before. #vogue1783 #v1783

I finally got round to fitting this today after making it December. The pattern is @simplicity_creative_group #V1783. I loved the fullness in the skirt. According to my measurements I was a size 16. Because there was so much ease, I made a size 14 and it was still way too big. Luckily, with all the seams, it was quite easy to take in, but I will definitely size down next time. This dress required over 6 metres of fabric (at 150cm wide)! I initially intended to make it in a solid coloured poplin, but when I saw this linen blend fabric on sale at Spotlight, I decided to go for it. It’s a lot, but it feels very special to wear, especially because of the gold trim detail on the button placket and collar (thanks for the advice @lena.hamo ) and the metallic buttons (ditto @lorettaanneb and @funkbunny ). Due to how much fabric was required, I made a toile in cheap poplin before cutting into the good stuff. The two different fabrics (print vs plain) give two completely different looks and think I’ll make it again in a solid colour with long, cuffed sleeves for the office. The belt is adjustable, copied from one of my RTW belts. Pattern: #v1783 by @simplicitymccallsaustralia . I really enjoyed making the dress, and I love the finished product with its big pleats and clever details. I’m really glad I made a toile first so that I knew which pieces needed to be finished before being sewn together. Not sure why the big pattern companies often omit seam finishing techniques. Mods: Lengthened the sleeve slightly and added elastic at the sleeve hems. I think I will change these to proper cuffs and shorten the dress just a tad. This midnight blue is impossible to photograph! It’s another #v1783, cut shorter this time and with a more fitted sleeve. I borrowed the sleeve pattern from #v9371 - now #v1747 - which is also a drop shoulder style and required only a little adjusting to fit (kindly lent to me by @lorettaanneb ), and I borrowed the deep cuffs from the #stylearcphoebe shirt. I made this dress previously in a pink toned patchwork look fabric with glitzy trim (see grid). It was a lot, and I love it. But I really like the dress in this more sophisticated solid colour, too. Here is my rendition of the lovely V1783! Definitely one of my more memorable makes of 2021. This was the first time I tried implementing french seams - they took ages to do, but I'm so glad I learned how to do it! I found that I definitely prefered a cleaner finish on the inside of a garment, even though there was no visible difference on the outside. I also wish I had learned this trick when I was making the jacket from the V9365 set 😭 . Project completed in June 2021 .
