Finished flat lay if my recent V1696 with a Barbie-esque feel. A very simple pattern from start to finish but i had to make it more difficult by using a brocade fabric and making a satin sash instead of just using ribbon like the pattern suggested. I had actually purchase this fabric from @joann_stores back in September to make this dress for a different show in October. But I wasn’t able to attend and this outfit idea had sat in my mind since then. It’s a cotton but unique in that the metallic stars are raised on the fabric puffy paint style. I did have to use caution with pressing as not to melt them. Progress! I have 2 dresses I’m making for my Disneyland trip. Snow White, and Merida. I don’t know what I’ll do with the black fur, but it’ll be some kind of cape. I’m enjoying the details and I’m really excited for these projects, even to wear just because! I also appreciate being at a point where my pattern going a little off the fabric doesn’t kill me inside, I know I can work with it. I do with I had more energy though. Bouncing back from my work weeks (that currently include fewer days off and more 15+ hour days…) takes me longer than I’d like. Vogue 1696 in this cute cotton print from @minervadotcom is almost finished, just hem to do now. I did think I could leave out the zip as the other version I made of this goes on without undoing the zip but it didnt work with this version so just shows you how different fabrics have different properties even though they not stretch. I did 2 days (Friday & Saturday) at Beach Hop in March with @miss.polly.rose but somehow never managed to take a single photo with her 🤦‍♀️ we stayed with @hannahmcalley1995 ... didn't get a single photo with my boo either 🤦‍♀️ Friday was a look around the market wearing my amazing @sarsparilly pink cosmic girl princess dress with an uranium necklace & my moon dust brooch from @folk_and_fortune . Then to the RSA to watch some of the heats for the big Elvis competition. Then Saturday, I was in my pink floral dress I made from Vogue 1696 using a vintage floral cotton sheet & bright pink satin ribbon. I paired it with a simple straw hat with pink flowers decoration (including my bridesmaid flower crown from @dzsem 's wedding) & my favourite @splendette woven bangle. I call this my Mary Poppins look. . I jumped in Mr Sandy Dee’s 1948 Ford Bonus Cabover with @miss.sandydee & enjoyed being in the parade! It was so much fun waving out the window at everyone! So here is my latest make just in time for the Sewn with Viscose challenge. It's a reissued vogue pattern from 1954, bit about the pattern later on. I was gifted this beautiful Viscose Sateen crepe from the Minerva core range.It has one shiny side and one matt side so is great for patterns where maybe you want a contrast without buying 2 lots of fabric. I decided to alternate the pieces between matt and shiny. One last photo from the @miss_motostatic_pinup_contest_. This photo was taken by my husband and it’s not the best quality (you get what you pay for 🤣). But it captured a moment I want to talk about 📸 Back in March I taught a posing class for a pinup workshop and I explained that anything can be a pose with the right attitude and expression. This pose wasn’t so much a pose as it was an opportunity to lift a strap that was starting to fall down. I hooked it with my thumb and put it back on my shoulder. I just committed to the moment and I think it might be my favorite pose in the bunch! 🌟 It meant so much to hear from a number of gals in the contest that they had found sometime I said that worked for them and that they could use for themselves. This week I finished my make of #V1696 and I love it! I used cotton double-matte ribbon, which I had to get on Etsy, as the ribbon since it's a much higher quality for apparel than the kinds of ribbon sold at the big box stores. And now the dress details! The pattern is #vogue1696 in a cotton with puffy stars from @joann_stores 🌟 So now the trouble. I’ll start by saying this is an easy and quick sew. I made the size 8 and the finished waist measurement read 25.5 inches. I usually make a 25 inch waist but I knew this was much less fitted and structured than my normal makes so I decide to leave as is. I even took time to add pockets since that is not part of the pattern. There is no easy way to fit this pattern as you go since so much of the shaping relies on the gathering from the ribbon straps which you don’t even make the casing for until after you put the zipper in. So imagine my surprise when after the crude attempts I made to fit as I went along resulted in a dress that looked like a baggy sack! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ It was at that point I decided to measure to see where I went wrong and somehow I made a dress with a 27 inch waist. So I measured the pattern pieces to find that the finished measurements were wrong.. My bad for not double checking measurements 🙈 And now the dirty. I’m a petite person and ease is the enemy of fit for me. I was in a mood and didn’t feel like disassembling the dress so I decided I would just pinch out the excess and sew a new side seam. I ended up taking it in 2 inches at the waist and 4 total inches at the bust. This did change the neckline of the pattern but I like it! And I quickly whipped up a belt to hide waist seam sides where the skirt was pinched together. I was upset it wasn’t perfect but I can’t stay mad because despite the ugly insides and it looks great and photographs beautifully 💙❤️ Even for all the trouble I would 100% make this pattern again with the adjustments I made. the garden is my sewing room and I got started on my next make with this pretty blue floral cotton fabric which iI think is so apt for a 1950s dress as the fabric could be vintage, gifted to me by @minervadotcom . The hot weather has turned my head and I decided to make another summer dress and its vogue 1696 again for which I make no apology. I made good progress on this today and now the dress is hanging overnight to let it drop ready to be hemmed tomorrow then the images. As i said before this is a really quick make and this fabric is so easy to work with that it makes it even quicker. So vogue 1696 is finished and I love it. This fabric is so Summery and the  dress is just in time for the heatwave. I love this cute print gifted to me by @minervadotcom with small Ivory, light blue and dark and light pink  flowers on a dark blue background  and I think it works well with this design. Its Broadcloth which is 100% cotton, a perfect fabric for summer, It holds the shape of the skirt well. In these photos I am wearing a crinoline petticoat but I also taken some photos without any underskirts which I will post after this post so you can see the difference and what it looks like without underskirts if you plan to wear it  that way and I probably wear it that way for everyday wear. I decided to add a contrasting organza  ribbon to match with the bright pink of some of the flowers in the print which I am glad I did as it makes it pop. As i said before in my previous make this is a really easy quick  make, I cut out and made apart from hemming yesterday in between looking after my grandaughter. It has 3 main pattern pieces and a guide for the ribbon, you cut 2 of the front and back  bodice and 4 of the skirt, the back and front are the same which you sew together at the side seams then gather to attach to the bodice.  No facings, collars or sleeves to fit just a back zip which is probably the most difficult part. Vogue 1696. I had slightly mixed feelings about this one. A new full skirted Vogue Vintage pattern, yayyyy, but very gathered and with gathers on a ribbon rather than sewn in or elasticated, hmmmmm. The 50%sale just before going on holiday convinced me to have a go. I had watched this very bright tropical border fabric on Amothreads until all but 4m had sold out, so I snapped it up then forgot about it in my stash. I knew I needed a gathered or pleated skirt pattern to show the border print to its best advantage and was a bit horrified to find that the skirt on V1626 is slightly curved as well as gathered. Fortunately the large scale of the print hides that it’s not entirely parallel with the hem. I toyed with the idea of putting a straight gathered skirt on the V1696 bodice but I’m glad I didn’t as the underbust is not very fitted. There is a dart and a pleat on each side above the waist, but a gathered neckline going down to a gathered waistline wasn’t going to create the hourglass figure of the envelope art on a figure like mine without a belt. You could probably go down a size or nip the waist in, but I think it would still create a blouson effect above the waist on many people, particularly those with a big or not very high bust. I’m pleased with the finished effect. I used extra wide double satin ribbon which seemed to grip the neckline well enough to keep it in place. If you pull the bodice up a bit you can hide a regular bra rather than a strapless, which was a nice surprise.
