Day 17 of #memademay2022 This is #v8988 jacket and trousers with #s4762 waistcoat. Mr Magpie is a product of the 80's (yes, he has a red leather tie 🤯) and he wanted a Miami Vice style suit. I managed to find this pale blue linen for a sensible price and set to work. I think the trousers and waistcoat are an ok fit but the jacket really isn't. It's tight across the chest and the sleeves are too short. This is less of a problem given the Miami Vice style inspiration as he can push the sleeves up.🤣 Well, I guess this counts as a wearable toile. Whether I make it again or not depends on how much he wears this version. I did catch a bit of a video where Mimi G's hubby made this jacket with some nice tailoring additions. Maybe one day.😉 Also, I really need to improve my framing. Trouble is the frame on Insta is different to a camera. Weekend #wip and I've started the jacket from #voguepatterns #v8988 as the final part of a 3 piece suit. 🧥👔👖🧥👔👖🧥👔👖🧥👔👖🧥👔👖🧥👔 Despite applying interfacing to the wrong side of the upper welt (the fabric grain is going in the wrong direction) I'm really enjoying this project. I'm beginning to like welt pockets, however, they are tricky. It's so hard to line everything up accurately and you need to do it without really being able to see. I hand basted all the various layers in an attempt to be more accurate which seems to have paid off. This pattern has you reinforce the corners of all the pocket openings which gave me a really good guide when it came to actual sewing. (Wish I'd thought of this when making the trousers.🤦‍♀️) Anyhoo, outside welts and pockets are complete as are the back and side seams. Spent ~40 hours the last ten days sewing my fiancé’s suit. I was really hoping I’d be finished today but I decided to do things the long way, or shall I say the tailored way. So much hand stitching! I hope the extra effort I am putting into the details of the jacket will be worth it in the end. Back to my day job tomorrow so sewing will continue in the evenings. Practice #V8988 trouser update. I’m just about finished with these wearable (or what I hoped were wearable) practice trousers for Dawson. About half way through construction, I gave up believing they would actually be wearable, but in the end, they might be…. for me! I struggled with the zipper, and somehow I messed up the waistband, back seam, and length sizing so they do not fit Dawson. BUT I tried them on and if I make a few tweaks, I think they could totally work for me. I’m so glad I made these practice pants because it was my first time with zippers, welt pockets, etc etc. I messed up a lot, but learned a ton. I know the final pants will be much much better. It's so close now....but not quite. Thought I would finish this #voguepatterns #v8988 jacket this weekend but it was not meant to be. This pattern reminds me why I love indie patterns best: the instructions are FAR superior. This is probably more of a reflection on my inexperience, but how is anybody who hasn't studied garment construction going to learn? Anyhoo, I'm fairly pleased with the outcome so far. Sleeves and linings are in, just hems to go. There will also be a little top stitching. Mr Magpie fits in it but he would benefit from going up a size. He needs slightly longer sleeves and I need to consider a forward shoulder adjustment. I made his usual stoop adjustment which, thinking about it, probably goes with having a forward shoulder.🤔 I began the first buttonhole at the sleeve and then realised I hadn't passed the bobbin thread through that little hole in the 'tail' of the bobbin case. Swipe to see the difference this makes to the tension. Top buttonhole is properly threaded. Amazing, huh? I am enjoying this mammoth project but I will be glad now once it's over. THE SUIT! Over 100 hours of love put into this double breasted pant suit that I made for my husband. Wow, it’s so special to finally say HUSBAND! 😊 It is the Vogue #v8988 Views B & C double breasted unlined jacket and pants. Fabric is a gray wool suiting and the lining/pocketing is a yellow silk charmeuse, both purchased @moodfabrics in Los Angeles. I used a tailoring kit from @corefabrics that included twill tape, canvas, shoulder pads, sleeve heads, and fusible interfacing. I did buy extra canvas and interfacing because the men’s blazer needed more than the kit provided (the kit was for a women’s blazer). Dawson designed the garment label that includes the coordinates to the location where we said our vows, San Francisco City Hall. @dutchlabelshop printed the labels and they turned out amazing! I used the labels in all of the wedding garments and was my “something blue.” This was the most challenging and technical make for me as a novice sewist. From double welt pockets to hand stitched canvas padding, it was a first for everything. I learned everything along the way and couldn’t have done it without the help of @sewitacademy and so many other tailors and sewists on Instagram/YouTube that share their process @sewsewlive @her.two.hands @rabbitailor So many things I would change if I had all the time in the world, but I had a deadline to make! J'ai cousu pour lui ! (Enfin tenter de coudre 😅) Cet été, je me suis mis pour challenge de coudre un costume pour monsieur. Nous sommes partis sur le modèle de Vogue #v8988 Après plusieurs toiles pour valider la taille et les ajustements, je suis partie sur une version de la veste en 36 aux épaules élargie au 38 à la taille afin de faire un test en conditions réelles. Sauf qu'avec tous les matériaux ajoutés pour donner de la structure à la veste, celle ci s'est avérée trop petite 🙃 J'ai utilisé des tissus qui proviennent d'une vente d'usine de vêtements de la région lyonnaise. Après réflexion, le tissu principal n'était peut être pas adapté à ce type de vêtement. Il est assez extensible et ne se comporte pas très bien sous le fer à repasser. La couture de cette veste a été une expérience très intéressante. J'ai appris énormément de choses sur les techniques de la couture tailleur, les points à la main et les différents tissus à ajouter pour structurer la veste. A big thank you to @sewitacademy ! qui propose un pas à pas très bien expliqué sur la couture de cette veste avec plein d'astuces. Une fois cette version test cousue, je suis partie à la recherche d'un beau tissu pour réaliser la version finale mais impossible de trouver mon bonheur dans le temps et le budget impartis. Work has commenced on #v8988 Phew! That was mammoth. 46 pattern pieces traced off! Yes, you heard me correctly. 46 pattern pieces! Admittedly that is for two tailored garments but tracing them off has taken me several afternoons. Fortunately I've made the waistcoat before, so that is already traced.👍 To be honest, I'm not looking forward to cutting this beast out. I feel like I will need to cut all 3 garments simultaneously to ensure that my placement is good. I suspect that I will pin pattern pieces in one session and cut in another. I currently feel the need to step away from this project for a while, but that's ok. However, I am undaunted by the sewing.😎 The way I rationalise this is that you only ever sew two pieces together at a time. I'll take it step by step and consult YouTube where necessary.🤣 We'll do a tissue fitting after I've made hubby's usual stoop adjustment. Oof. Today was rough with my sewing. For the first time since starting my wedding garment sewing journey, I wanted to scream. 🤬 I’m currently working on Vogue #V8988 suit trousers and it’s my first time sewing double welt pockets. By following the Vogue instructions the welt came out so bulky (first photo on the right, and second photo). Nothing I do will make the corners straight. I took a break, watched @sewsewlive sew the welt pocket on the new Mitchell trousers and 💡💡! I was able to sew up a gorgeous and very rectangular double welt pocket by following along (pictured on the left and third photo). Now the question is, is there anyway to fix a welt pocket after it’s been cut open? Any chance I can redo it? Or do I just need to embrace the imperfection and let it go? My first pair of tailored trousers complete. These are #voguepatterns #v8988 in pale blue linen. They are definitely not perfect but I'm pretty pleased with them and they fit Mr Magpie very nicely. The instructions for the back welt pockets have you reinforce the corners, which I did. However, even with hand basting it's very difficult to perfectly align all the fabric layers before sewing. AND if anything IS out of line you won't know until after you've cut the fabric. Having said that, I really enjoyed the process and I managed to properly align three of the four corners, so a mini win.😊 Some of the instructions I found quite difficult. I'm a visual person so the diagrams are generally very helpful. However, my lack of understanding WHAT I was doing, made understanding HOW to do it much harder. It felt like being in a car, knowing where I was but not where I was heading to. This is much more of a reflection on me than the instructions. I love the details on these trousers though. There's a small invisible pocket up near the waistband. I love the mini button tab which sits invisibly above the zip and all the bound edges inside. There's even a sting ray shaped crotch guard which neither me nor hubby have ever seen before. The back pockets were supposed to have button closures but Mr Magpie didn't like the idea of sitting on them. As these trousers are made in linen they are a very relaxed and casual fit. Perhaps if made in suiting fabric, he might like back buttons. There was also supposed to be a little notch in the back waistband seam. I didn't do the best job of it so I slip stitched it together. There's a couple of other things I would do differently next time but all to do with finishing the insides. The hems were sewn with a blind hemming foot which has given a lovely finish. Thanks to Aneka of Made To Sew on YT. Vogue #v8988 trousers are 99% complete! All that’s left are the back pocket buttons (which I’ll have to make by hand because my machine can’t handle small spaces and just eats up the fabric 😭) and the hem! Those will come later. This is probably the hardest and most technical make I’ve sewn thus far. So many details and fiddly bits, especially when working with a wool and a silk together. The fit is perfect after I made some small adjustments in the back. I would change a few things if I made these pants again, but for occasional special wear I think they turned out great. Wednesday #wip #voguepatterns #v8988 👖👔🧥👖👔🧥👖👔🧥👖👔🧥👖👔🧥 So, facings, collar and shoulders done. ✅ Really pleased with how the inside pocket turned out despite not being able to understand the instructions to construct the button tab. (I made it up.😊) Also wish I'd changed thread to blue for the actual button hole, but at least it's on the inside. It's kinda ok but my lapels aren't quite the same shape. Stitching round that tight a curve was pretty tricky.🤯 It was also tricky sewing into the point where collar and lapel meet without leaving a hole. It took a couple of passes but I got there. The collar seems quite narrow but that's just personal preference. It all needs another good press and for Mr Magpie to decide whether he wants top stitching on the collar and lapel edges. Of course this will prevent the underside fabrics from popping forward but it may be too sharp for this relaxed linen jacket. I’ll let you in on a little secret... Perfectionism is my biggest sewing enemy. I’ve started countless pairs of pants and fitting muslins over the past ten years, giving up on each of them along the way. This was the first I fought through my perfectionism and actually finished a pair (now multiple pairs) of pants! Were they perfect at the beginning? No. Are they perfect now? No, but much closer. Each time I learn something more...and I have plenty more pairs planned in my head. 🤔💭👖 Sewing teaches me: • Experience > perfect garment • It’s okay to be imperfect. • Practice pays off. I messed up on the sizing, but after Dawson tried it on I think I know what to do for my second one. The hardest thing I’ve ever sewn has to be the #V8988 mens suit. I made this for my husband for our wedding using new to me tailoring techniques. I cried because of a very messy welt pocket on the trousers, but now having some distance from the project I think they turned out great! Every step along the way with this project was new to me.
