TOO JAZZY…?! 95% finished the trousers for my suit, and seeing them fully constructed demonstrates just how bright this gorgeous fabric is! I haven’t put on the hook & bar yet, nor have I hemmed them, because: A) They are TIGHT! I need to lose about a stone over the next two weeks 😫 It’s weird because I did a quick basic toile of just the legs last weekend and it wasn’t this tight. Back to sewing! My @mccallpatterncompany #V1870 jacket is all cut out. I’m going to do more tailoring on this than the pattern calls for. So I’m using mostly sew-in hair canvas interfacing. The most notable exception is the welts for the pockets. Because one, they are hidden underneath the flaps and two, I want them to be a little more substantial, I used fusible hair canvas. But only on half of the welt. I also only used sew-in hair canvas on half of the flap. #MeMadeMay23 Day 16 Sometimes I work in buildings where you have to wear a collared shirt...so I wear stuff like this to keep it fun. (It was a prep school, I was a guest art teacher) I took these pictures after work, so the clothes got a little wrinkle by then. Shirt is #Butterick5153, made from a quilting cotton. Almost finished my suit, ready for this weekend - just buttons and hems to do. Showed the jacket to my husband. Husband: Wow! That’s perfect for where we’re going on Saturday night! Me: Why? Is it fancy dress?? Haha! Him: No, it’s dark…! Blummin’ good job I’ve got a sense of humour 😂😂 It took me around 14 hours over the weekend to do the jacket (horrendously long, bearing in mind I’d already constructed some pieces of it, including most of the lining pieces, while I awaited delivery of the interfacing that I’d forgotten I needed!) and around 3 of those were spent on the sleeves alone yesterday afternoon! I just could not “get” them! I’ve finally completed my @vintage_vogue_patterns #v1870 jacket that I made to go with my @stylearc #mckenziewovenpant & #joywovenvest ✂️ While working on this jacket I kept looking on @instagram & seeing loads of style influencers sharing #3piecesuits ! Now I don’t follow trends as such anymore but I do like to keep up to date with fashion & adopt things if they work for me… so I’m thrilled to have made my own version ready for spring in this gorgeous purple cotton from @poundfabrics ! As with all the garments I make, I like them to work in many different ways in my wardrobe. I finished my Vogue 1870 trouser suit! I think I already posted about what a simple easy comfortable trouser pattern this is. My flares are not quite as wild as the pattern suggests because I was short of fabric, but I will certainly make these again. The jacket I have more mixed feelings about. In the end I managed to get the lining of one sleeve to work as the pattern instructions said, but it was complicated and not easy to understand from the instructions. I obviously miss -assembled the other sleeve lining so I was able to finish it neatly but it doesn’t look the same on the inside of both arms. The mistake is completely invisible from the outside (unless you turn both sleeves inside out and compare them) but will bug me forever!!! Some of the easing on the curved seams is not as smooth and professional as I would like - even though I had no problem with the previous two blazers I made. The pocket flaps stick out a lot. Probably because I used too stiff an interfacing, but the flaps have sat better on jackets I’ve made before. I don’t think I’ll make this jacket again, partly because the Vikisews Aveline Blazer is so much better for me, but if you have a different body shape this may be just perfect for you. Be careful not to combine a too heavy interfacing with a heavy fabric though. I won this pattern and four others in Minerva’s #sewnwithvogue challenge. These are the #v1870 pants (see earlier post for the #v1870 blazer, made in neon yellow). The pattern is so similar in style to the Zimmerman Lyrical Pants that I just couldn’t resist adding the d-ring detail to these babies. The pattern came together very easily and didn’t need much in the way of fitting (although see below for minor modifications). I would totally recommend this pants pattern. For those following the neon yellow crepe journey, OF COURSE I ended up making matching pants (swipe). They were my toile for these. Pattern: #v1870 by @simplicitymccallsaustralia Fabric: A lovely fine wool-blend suiting from @supercheapfabrics Mods: * I added 6cm to the length (should have added more so I could hem them - instead I finished the edge with a facing as I didn’t want to lose any length). * Extended the waistline up by 2cm for a slightly higher waist. In hindsight, it was an unnecessary adjustment, which didn’t really add anything to the design and which meant I couldn’t use the curved waistband pieces (I did a straight waistband instead - not as nice a finish as the curved band). * Added the d-ring detail and belt loops * The neon yellow pants have an invisible zip closure at the back instead of a front fly closure and I added some sneaky elastic in the waistband for a more fitted look (and secret comfort).

Sewing Challenge 2024: April Swipe for the make ⏩️⏩️ This month was all about a major fashion icon from the golden age of Hollywood: Katharine Hepburn. Her famous slacks and pant suits were highly controversial in the 1930s, when women were expected to be feminine and submissive. For this outfit I used the Vogue pattern V1870, with purple ‘Gaberchino’ fabric from Dalston Mill Fabrics (and a cute Halloween cats polycotton lining). I’m really happy with how the trousers turned out - they fit perfectly and I love the way they look! The jacket is way too big for me, and you can see where I had difficulty with the pockets 😂😂 There was a lot of work in this project, so perhaps not the best choice for my busiest work month of the year, so it was a little hurried in the end. Here are some tips for staying safe… ⚠️Low danger - this calls for a touch of high viz clothing, like this neon yellow slip dress ⚠️⚠️Moderate danger - exercise more caution and up the high viz content by adding a neon yellow blazer ⚠️⚠️⚠️High danger - biatch, throw everything you have at it and choose head to toe high viz with a dress, blazer and neon yellow top Fabrics Dress and blazer: Neon yellow crepe Top: Neon yellow burn out knit Both from @theremnantwarehouse (Alex Perry deadstock) Buttons: Beautifully made ring edge buttons from @buttonmaniac Patterns: Blazer: #v1870. As far as blazers go, this is a pretty easy and straightforward pattern, with nice modern lines. But the cut and techniques are no match for the Vikisews and DP Studio blazer patterns I’ve previously made. I think I will round off the front bottom edge, as I don’t like how it’s sitting (I probably should have used a heavier interfacing). Top: Tried and true #nikkodress top version Dress: Vintage vogue #v2859 @simplicitymccallsaustralia . This pattern has been in my stash forever and it is beautiful. I didnt follow the instructions, as they called for some unusual (maybe just old fashioned) techniques, like overlapping and top stitching pieces together (I sewed the seams in the usual ‘right sides facing’ manner), binding edges (I faced and lined the dress) and inserting side snap closures (I substituted for a centre back zip). I shortened the dress and also changed the bust gathers in the front bodice to a single dart for a more modern line. I will absolutely be sewing this pattern again, maybe in a more elegant colour. In closing: I think I am suffering from a very impractical neon yellow obsession. I have left over fabric and can’t stop thinking about making matching pants, even though I am pretty certain I will NEVER wear them…

First is an Italian Virgin Wool Tweed in olive tones. The other is a Thom Browne Cashmere in very dark Navy. Here are some things to consider: I wear a lot of earthy tones, but I don't have much navy in my wardrobe. OTOH, I think a navy blazer goes with just about anything, and like I say, I already have lots of earthy tones in my wardrobe. Prick me with a fork - I’M DONE!! The suit is finished… almost. Spent the afternoon affixing buttons (self-covered ☺️), adding the hook & bar and hemming the trousers. Hemming took about 2 hours on its own, because voluminous flares take some measuring (especially when you’re doing it on your own, and because I didn’t realise quite how voluminous the flares on the trousers actually are!). All that’s left to do is remove the 1,0001 tailors tacks (I’m old fashioned in that way, I prefer them to other methods of marking), check some iffy spots and give both pieces what’s known in the trade as a jolly good press.
