Vogue 1838 (1963 Vintage Reissued Pattern) Level: Intermediate Still a work in progress. It’s safe to say the 50s and 60s are my favorite fashion decades. This classic cape coat is the perfect example of a wardrobe piece that stands the test of time. I really enjoyed putting this together but here are some thoughts on the pattern: I wish that there was an option C for length. Not a big deal as you can lengthen or shorten but I’m lazy so a drawn piece would have been nice. The button loops, I can take it or leave it. I love that are instructions for lining. Lots of steps! That isn’t always an option. That’s it. I love that I can make the coat that doesn’t exist.

My entry for #SewTogetherForWinter ❄️ Thank you @sewing_in_spain @sewsarahsmith and @crafting_slovak for organising this wonderful challenge! It was the occasion for me to do something that terrified me but that I was dying to do: sewing a coat!🧥 Since this was my first try, I thought I’d make things easier for myself and go for a cape so there’s not a lot to do in terms of fitting. I used the vintage reproduction Vogue 1838 and made the size XL according to my bust measurements and this size is great. The pattern was easy enough to follow, despite the numerous technical aspects of the cape (bound buttonholes, angles, hand sewing, etc.). But I messed up big time with the front facing. There should be some loops and buttons inside to close the armholes but I didn’t put them correctly at first and realised too late so I decided to let it all open. And I’m still unsure where I went wrong but the armhole facing and front facing joining together was an absolute mess of raw edges so I did as I could and hid the raw hem with some of the velvet ribbon I used as trimming. I also shortened the cape as I went for view B but it arrived at my ankles and even after hemming, I would have looked like I was on my way to Diagon Alley. I was a little surprised because I’m 5’7 so patterns don’t tend to be ridiculously long on me, so I’d be wary of this if you’re shorter than me! Honestly, I love this little cape even though it’s definitely not the most practical piece of outerwear and it’s full of faults (like the fabric pulling at the top of the armhole 😰), but I love the style and what an achievement it was for me! It also taught me a lot about hand sewing, and I think I love it now. All of the lining had to be hand stitched at the sides and bottom, which was no mean feat! Last night, I’m reviewing the pattern instructions and doing some research online of other people making this pattern and I see zero! How is this possible?! Happy to be the first post this. Winter is coming hot and heavy.
