Two years ago I made myself a coat. Last year I made coats for my brother, my mum and, by chance, my future sister in law. Needless to say, my dad felt a bit left out. Well, now it's my dad's turn. I said I'd make a start in August, so this week I've started toiling. Out of season post: I promised my husband I'd make him a coat...2 years ago 🤣 I finally had a week off and no further excuses to knuckle down and toile a Vogue Patterns V1853. Admittedly I first spotted @andrea_djones ' glorious checkered number and thought I could use the pattern myself too, one day. This "wearable toile" is made from a heavyweight 70% wool 20% cashmere 10% polyester blend from @supercheapfabrics - is it blue or is it grey? My in laws commented it looked very Dr Zhivago with the collar done up 🤔 I will sneak a photo of the husband wearing it eventually, in the meantime there were no fit adjustments required apart from shortening the sleeves by 8cm. Next time I would fully interface the jacket front piece with something like Vilene H410 to stop it from stretching/sagging, as I had to unpick the understitching in this area to avoid accentuating it. Also, actually use a pressing cloth as you can see some scorch marks on the poor jacket 👀 The V1853 instructions were not bad, and when I felt a bit unsure, I headed over to the @ninaleelondon Richmond blazer sew along blog posts for some guidance. One coat, two outfits. Which outfit will you wear with this yellow plaid piece? (Doesn’t ‘piece’ crack you up sometimes? It used to be ‘clothing’ and now it’s ‘pieces’. But I do feel like this plaid really does make a ‘piece’ 😄) . THE FABRIC : one of the color ways already sold out after my last post, but the good news is this one is still available. Theory double faced coating @measurefabric , the virgin wool means it’s soft and not itchy in the slightest. The secret is that the yarn gets a single twist and has never been through any other manipulation that can make the fibers more barbed (like Pendleton wool if you’ve ever toured their factory or researched why their wool is always so soft). Anyway, it’s squishy and thick and can totally be made into a single layer blanket-like jacket, but the overstuffed, puffy quilted look is all the rage right now and I wanted something a little more ‘oversized boyfriend’s coat’ which leads me too… . THE PATTERN: it’s a men’s coat pattern! #v1853. Here’s how I made it work: I chose the size according to my bust measurement, size 36. Then I adjusted the shoulders bringing each of them in by 1.25”. I also tapered the shoulder seam down by 3/4” total (which makes the armscye smaller by the same amount) and then made the corresponding sleeves 3/4” total more narrow, taking them in at the under arm seam. I kept everything else the same. The result is a structured boxy boyfriend look, I didn’t even need shoulder pads, but it still feels like a blanket. I can finally share this project now that it's been gifted! This collaboration was based on #V1853 pattern, but many modifications were made. He wanted a more fitted look than the usual bomber style or bulky overcoat look. He chose the colors and even designed the quilt that I pieced and quilted. I'm making really good progress on my dad's coat. This wool is a dream to work with. I love the process of pressing wool too, and using my wooden clapper and lots of steam to get nice flat seams - it's just so satisfying! This is the finished main body including welt flap pockets. Once upon a time my life as a “wife of” required that I had a number of evening dresses - yes, definitely dresses, with jackets and shawls to cover my shoulders for Dinners. This particular dress was made in 1993 for a ball, in my favourite colour, and glorious fabric purchased in Karstadt, Dortmund. I’m sure it went to a dinner too, without its tail, but if I tell you I had my eldest daughter in 1994 you will perhaps understand that my rib cage and waist, and sun damage, caused by poor storage, have meant that the dress has languished in my wardrobe, only coming out for teenage fancy dress… Well obviously I’m not buying new for #LondonFrocktails, (and I have a back up plan) but perhaps #MagamOpulentOctober is the moment to attempt a #refashion… it’s #DupionSilk and deserves another chance! After a false start this morning when I realised I didn't have the right purple thread, I made really good progress on my dad's coat and put the entire lining together. The pattern didn't have internal pockets so I stole the pattern pieces from my brother's coat I made last year and it worked surprisingly well - I think I'm getting better at these welt pockets! I'm completely in love with this purple lining fabric, I think it looks incredible against the black wool. It's such a high quality lining and feels so special to work with. I also remembered to add a hanging loop and you can swipe to see the labels I chose (always a fun part of sewing!) Another Valentine's Day dress option I just finished today. This dress was made with one of my favorite patterns. It is a #vintage #vogue @dvf #v1853 wrap dress. Only changes I made was lengthen the pockets and made the basic cuffs into cute tie cuffs. I love that high end designers release patterns so everyday people can afford to make their beautiful fashions. I wish @mccallpatterncompany would re-release some of these gems. I have my eye on a few other vintage #DVF Vogue patterns but can't find any in my budget on ebay at the moment. This fabric is a soft stretch fabric from @fabriclandontario. I have it in a pink with white dot too!

An epic Me Made May Day 13: Wearing the dress I wore to my high school prom in May 1986. 🎉🎉😍 My mom and I sewed this Bellville Sassoon for Vogue (now vintage #v1853) gown my sophomore year of high school. I likely cut it out and she sewed it because she was the Prom Dress Making Queen, then I painstakingly glued sequins on the tulle overskirt with Elmer’s glue. I hadn’t even heard of hot glue guns in 1986 haha. Swipe to see the pattern envelope and 16-year-old me wearing it with my prom date. Obviously, I loved the dress so much that I kept it for 37 years. Mom and I did so good! The dress is a classic and I’m so happy I kept it. My husband and I are attending @diffadallastx tonight and this seemed perfect for the over-the-top fashion and art event benefiting HIV and AIDS. I updated the look a bit by hacking off the bottom of the dress to make it a mini, sewed a rosette for the overskirt waist to replace the old silver lamé bow which had seen better days, and hot glued rhinestones over the old sequins. Sewed a cute matching rosette necklace too. I may start wearing rosette chokers every single day because they are magnificent turkey neck disguises. 😜 Lest anyone think this is a perfectly glamorous look, today’s backstory is that our dog was having the runs 💩 this am and I fell off my back steps while trying to get her outside and rolled my ankle, but I am powering through the swollen ankle and still wearing stilettos. My Dad's coat is finally finished! Thank you everyone for following the journey with me This is the second men's Vogue coat I've made and the pattern is amazing. I love the collar detail and the back belt especially, but the instructions are sparse even for a big 4 pattern so it was good I already had an idea what I was meant to be doing. The fabric was a dream to sew with and I love the purple contrast of the lining. I had to make some narrow shoulder adjustments and added a hanging loop and internal welt pockets because a coat always needs more pockets. But I am so proud of the finished result and my Dad absolutely loves it which makes all the hard work worthwhile This coat completes the immediate family set and I'm hoping to get a picture of the 5 of us all in our handmade coats soon. But I've already offered to make one of my aunts a coat next - I can't seem to resist!
