Favourite ever make is a big call and I was unable to decide before the deadline. I made this skirt and bustier for my daughter in 2015. As House Music Captain she conducted a House choir (with choralography). She also MC’d the evening. The brief was a show stopping gown in the House colour, purple. The challenge - a skirt that did not trip her up and a strapless top that did not budge, despite vigorous arm movements. Mission accomplished! The maxi skirt was more than a full circle with a very fitted waist and the high-low hem reduced the tripping factor. Magically the wearer appears to float when walking as air coming under the raised front hem lifts and moves the lightweight silk. Swipe through for a cute video of the movement. She wanted a cropped bustier, so it could not be supported by boning from the waist. It was very closely fitted with multiple layers of silk, self lining, boning, cotton flannel underlining, fusible underlining, built in bra and fasteners. The third slide is a toile of the top on which the final was based. Unfortunately I have no photographs of this engineering marvel that required assistance for getting on and off! Her talented school friends completed the look with hair and makeup. I was so proud to be able to help bring my daughter’s vision to life. Happy New Year!! 🎊. I’m starting off the New Year with my second to last make of 2021. It was kind of a fail . I’m going to still wear it but I don’t love it. It was an experiment. I wanted to create a Prada inspired nylon skirt (see last pic). But I used stiff cotton instead. I also initially made it too small then adjusted it to only make it too big 🤦🏾‍♀️. Anyway it is wearable. I might go back in to adjust it … maybe. I’m working on my make nine list so look out for that soon. I was lucky enough to get to go to South Korea in 2016 as part of the @orfordmusique orchestra, and while I was there I bought two pieces of silk from a fabric market. I had been waiting for the "right time" to cut into them, and then came the #sewfrosting challenge from @closetcase.patterns and @truebias encouraging everyone to make something that brings you joy but isn't necessarily practical. So that seemed like a sign that I needed make a floor length golden yellow silk gown with a (7.9m long) high-low hem. 🌞 All the details and lots more photos are on the blog, link in bio!
