#MeMadeMay day 22 and my entry for @fringefabrics tried and true contest of the week. I think I’ve made this vintage Vogue #V8789 at least five times. I was looking at the hashtag for the pattern and it’s definitely a dress that was made for stripes. I made this in 2019 and unintentionally had bought fabric that is incredibly similar to the pattern cover. Every time I wear a dress made from this patterns I end up with many compliments. It’s also an easy sew and easy to hack into a knit version as well. ✂️✂️ A fun teaching story from today- a boy asked me for needle and thread to sew the sleeve his friend had ripped. He was wearing the shirt as he tried to sew so I don’t think he was super successful, but always so proud when kids take skills I’ve taught them and use them outside of the classroom. Also went to the school play today- it’s so fun to see the kids try and excel in things they’re passionate about.

Sewing Challenge 2024: May Swipe for the make ⏩️⏩️ I knew this month would be my favourite from the moment I came up with the challenge - in fact this was the first iconic moment in fashion that I decided on. I have been in love with @dior since visiting his home in Granville on a family holiday many years ago, and the elegance of the New Look has had a hold on me since then! As I knew this would be my favourite project, I knew I had to go all out with my fabric choice and also pay close attention to the tiniest of details! When deciding on fabrics I was torn - at first I considered going for olive green to replicate a vintage dress I had seen online; then I considered pale grey and pink in homage to Dior’s Granville home and his preference for softer hues. However, much like the man himself I love a red dress, and when my research found that Dior included a red dress in every collection, I went straight to @dalston.mill.fabrics for this wine two-tone Silk Taffeta fabric. For the pattern I went back to Vogue, finding that they have a collection of vintage patterns translated into modern sizes and I opted for V8789. It was such a simple pattern to follow, but with an expensive and fragile material I didn’t want anything too complicated as I wanted to minimise the risk of unpicking and resewing. I’m completely in love with this dress! The fit is extremely comfortable and it feels so luxurious to wear. I wish I could be this glamorous all the time! My @sew_melbourne Garden Party dress 🌈 and entry for @wearethefabricstore #TFSPatternMatchComp I’m in love with this dress and those chevron stripes! Fabric is a very lightweight yarn-dyed cotton from @stonemountainfabric Pattern is #v8789. I underlined and lined the bodice with cotton lawn for extra structure, coverage, and a cleaner finish. I didn’t consider that underlining would add an extra challenge for pattern matching but it did make it even more rewarding when I hit the mark! The skirt is pattern matched too. It’s four widths of fabric, 6m total. In the 3rd photo there is a seam near my thumb between the darker green and black. (Seriously, I promise it’s there!) At the waistline I pleated the skirt into tiny pleats with careful attention to the stripes. It’s lined in cotton silk but using less width than the shell and larger pleats. I made the belt with a vintage buckle many years ago to go with one of my earliest me-made dresses. On Sunday I accessorised with all red - a vintage headscarf, Melissa rose shoes, Coach heart bag and Deer Arrow brooch. Thanks again to everyone who came. Made a dress from the @normalheightsghosts old Christmas sheets (they went peppermint this year). And wrapped myself in lights for the last day before break because being an art teacher is a permanent excuse to be extra. I braved the chill to snap a quick pic of this dress I recently made that I intend to wear to @chicagofrocktails in June. It’s #v8789, a repro of a 1957 pattern. I changed the skirt from major gathers to box pleats, which was still a common feature in 1957. I really enjoyed making this, and it wasn’t too hard. It features a cool self facing for the V of the bodice. I like this bodice so much, I might try making a jumpsuit with it and attaching it to the @helens__closet #winslowculottes. Can you picture it? Do you ever buy a fabric for a specific pattern or project and then wind up using it for something else entirely? That’s what happened with this blue fabric! Some fabric I buy because I love it with no particular project in mind, but this I thought for sure was going to be another B6412, but I just lost enthusiasm for that idea and let this sit in my stash for way too long. I’d been wanting to make up Vogue V8789 View A for literal years and finally decided to bite the bullet and do it, and pulled this fabric out to use for my wearable muslin and… I absolutely love the pairing. It feels like it was meant to be, and I’m so happy I didn’t wind up using it for that B6412 I’d originally envisioned. Speaking of V8789, I feel like I’m late to the party on this one! I know it’s a well-loved pattern, and I actually made View B into a Christmas dress last year, even though I thought I’d get around to making View A first. I just can’t help myself when I find a pattern I enjoy and I usually wind up making many versions of it. This is V8789 view A again, paired with what may be my most-used pattern, the Charm Patterns Dorothy Bolero! I used two @rubystarsociety fabrics for this project; if you think I am only sewing with their fabrics for my “official” Makers projects this year, you would be sorely mistaken! I love their fabrics and have a pretty extensive collection in my stash, and still pull their materials out pretty often. I love this pairing of V8789 and the Dorothy Bolero for an “every day” vintage look. Especially in a novelty print done in earth tones like this, it feels really wearable. Do you have go-to patterns that you make over and over again, or do you constantly try new ones? I find I have to actively push myself to make new patterns, otherwise I’d consistently fall back on my old favorites. #MeMadeMay day 21 I had someone recently ask me how much time I spend on creative hobbies. I said I try to fit in at least sometime each week but that my health hasn’t been great this year so I feel like all I do is go to the doctors. I just went through my calendar and by Friday of this week I will have had 31 appointments since late January. This includes my regular doctor, dermatologist, allergist, tons of eye appointments to try to fix my dry eyes and tons of chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage appointments to try to fix my jammed neck nerve. Anyway all of this to share that I wore this to two different doctors appointments today but I’m done with them now so I’m gonna do some sewing. ✂️✂️ Dress is a Vintage Vogue #V8789

Somehow this dress with “Hello Summer!” printed on it became my “goodbye summer” dress... I made it wayyyy back in May(?) I want to say, as a test run of V8789 on the straight of grain with the center front seam removed I had enough fabric left over to make a bolero, but needed to order a specific shade of blue for the bolero lining, so put off making that, and then got invited to a wedding, planned a roadtrip, and got busy sewing for those events— and before you know it, it’s Labor Day. So I guess we’re on the other side of summer. Fancy Friday, that's a wrap on #memademay2019 💗 Bringing a fun month to a close with some patriotic colors, a little sparkle, and a some charming prints. 🇺🇲 I tried to do something different this month, and I hope that through all those selfies and Fancy Fridays I showed what's possible when it comes to sewing. My secrets really aren't so secret or groundbreaking: I use a lot of easy patterns, I use a good pattern over and over again, and I mostly know what works for me so I stick with that and don't worry about the rest. Linda is experimenting with some playful mixing and matching as she layers her makes from a very productive season. For the first look, she used an EOS yarn dyed cotton shirting (sold out) for her #mccallspatterncompany 6285 blouse shown under a #v8954 sweater vest in our variegated knit (fabric # 76114). For the pants, she highly recommends #v8789 which she models here in our stretch viscose crepe (fabric # 68488). With some extra crepe fabric, she made a coordinating skirt (#mccalls3341) as well! Next, she put together a skirt, mask, belt, and infinity scarf all sewn from our deco floral cotton poplin (fabric # 78418). For the tights and top she used a sold-out EOS spandex jersey creamsicle stripe with patterns #v9108 and McCall's 3341. I’m finally ready to share my first Christmas make this year! This fabric had been languishing in my stash for a couple of years. I picked it up because I loved it, but then once I had it, it just wasn’t speaking to me… But I finally decided it would be a good choice to make a pattern I’ve been meaning to try forever, too! These two were waiting for each other! This is my first attempt at Vogue V8789 View B, and I really like it! I’ve got a kind of short neck and the bateau neckline keeps wanting to scrunch down after I move in this for a little while, but I still really like it! I really want to tackle View A from this pattern as well; that’s the view I was first drawn to when I picked this up many years ago. Are you getting in the holiday spirit, or do you prefer to wait until later in the season?
