It's Houston's last cold snap, so I'm sharing my final winter look - a shawl coat and faux leather men’s jeans I made for my nephew's trip to Utah. The snow scene is so beautiful, I had to do his fantastic photoshoot justice. Thanks, @justkendled for the photos! Coat details: For the coat, I used #V8930 and fashion fabric called "Wool" from http://bit.ly/STF-SM. The Ponte knit lining and SMF interfacing helped stabilize the body and lapel. The wool was easy to sew with no special treatment besides regular interfacing. I finished the edges with a hand-stitched blanket stitch. Jeans details: The fantastic faux leather jeans were made using Silhouette men's CJs jeans pattern in size 34, with "inkwell" faux leather from @sewmuchfabric. The detailed construction techniques required special treatment, but the faux leather sewed like butter with a size 16 needle and upholstery thread for topstitching, along with a Teflon presser foot. Simple all-purpose thread was used for construction. Overall, I'm really happy with how this winter look turned out. The coat and pants complement each other so well, and my nephew looked great in them while exploring Utah's snow-covered landscapes. If you're interested in making a similar coat or pants, I highly recommend using the same materials I did - they made the sewing process much easier and the final result looks amazing. Don't forget to share your creations with me!

As someone who sunburns easily, I got the inspiration to make this jacket last summer when my friend @alysespeaces and I were out exploring a creek and I had to keep applying sunscreen obsessively. She was wearing a UPF shirt, meaning that it has SPF qualities to protect your skin from the sun more than your usual cotton shirt. ☀️ I wanted something light that I could throw over anything, but most UPF clothing is expensive and more sporty than I wanted. I wanted something that I could just as easily throw over a swimsuit as a dress or shorts. I also wanted something with a hood, to protect my hair part (which often gets burned despite my best efforts), but wasn’t a hoodie-style jacket. ☀️ Thus, after scouring patterns and fabric, I settled on the Very Easy Vogue pattern #v8930 and sun protective fabric from #rockywoodsfabric and this is the final result! How ironic that the perfect pattern for a summery coat was originally designed as a winter jacket, but I think it worked out well.

I lengthened this version by about 8 inches & hacked versions B & C together as I love the overlapping seams but also wanted side pockets. A desperately needed this last make of 2022!! We had a hasty cold snap here in Seattle in late December that left things frigid and a slick freezing rain. I was able to whip up this coat in 3 days, and I needed it! To my rescue: the Vogue #v8930 wrap coat 🧥 in view 'C' (which is fully lined and in-seam pockets). It's made of 5 yards of Quilted Outerwear Fabric in color Black from @joann_stores. My mods: added a hanging loop, belt loops, and 3 inch cuffs. I also lined the coat with the same fabric as the outside for extra warmth. Backstory: I never had a legitimate winter coat, needless to say I had a gaping hole in my wardrobe. My inspiration came from @hobos_of_hoboken; I sincerely loved your version and wish my fabric was as drapey as yours. Although, I did search far and wide for 2 weeks for a similar fabric but settled on my current fabric because it was available and on-sale. I can easily say my winter coat keep me warm in our 24 deg F weather and I am thrilled with this make.
