Sew nine plans 2021 This is the first time I actually put this list together cos I usually don’t plan for these things nor very good with sticking to plans...but we’ll see.... Actually, to put 9 on the list is an ambitious one. Since I’m quite stubborn when it comes to getting that perfect fit, I usually do at least one toile before the cutting into good fabric. So to sew 9 means to sew at least sew 18. I’ve already completed a #mnrivertop, and a #soipennydresshack this year...does it count? Another goal I have this year is to sew from my fabrics I already have. Merry Christmas, lovelies! It’s been a while since I’ve been on here. Taking pictures and posting is never high on my list of things to do, but I took advantage of being dressed up and in front of my friend’s perfect Christmas tree! This fabric was an immediate “add to cart” for me. I love the big scale and the deep moody colors. When I saw it, I immediately thought of the #v9253. The viscose fabric very much suited the flowy lines of the pattern. As I usually do with low cut tops, I shaved 1/2 inch off of the shoulders. This beautiful linen / cotton fabric from @spotlightstores literally had strangers come up to me and say how lovely this dress was. That doesn’t happen very often, and I think this was because this pattern was the perfect match. I reach for this dress again and again as it is just so nice to wear. #MeMadeMay2025 We drove all day yesterday and we’re back at Podere Santa Pia. The weather is nice so it’s time for my black linen #v1735, the one with the deep V. After I finished it this V was indeed too deep to be comfortable. I closed it with some multi coloured buttons. I love it this way. For my next dresses, I made it 3 times already I drafted a cross over front pattern. #mmmay25

The Folklore Dress over a year in the making 🗾🏔️🏙️ This dress was planned as soon as @femalehemingway got us tickets to the Eras Tour in Zurich. I knew I wanted it to be inspired by the green folklore dress that Swift wore during the show and loved the free Edith Dress pattern from @moodfabrics. So I began looking all over for the perfect fabric. Literally all over. I wanted something that was luxurious, and knew I would be making a dress with heirloom details. And the cape being vines and trees, not floral, was also super crucial to my vision. Turns out not a lot of emerald green, vine embroidered fabric out there. It wasn’t until we went to Japan in October 2023 that I found the fabric. The dress is 100% silk and the cape sleeves are an embroidered, sequined mesh from stores in Nippori Fabric Town. The fabric sat for awhile. A long while. The fabric sat until a week before we were supposed to leave for Switzerland. And the day I started the dress my father was admitted to the hospital. He’s fine now but at first it looked like we may not even go on the trip (especially when he was delirious with fever and texted everyone he knew he was septic. He was not.) Needless to say, the dress was not finished in time for Zurich. So it sat for a few more months, as sewing took a backseat while I opened @alcottcandles, selling music inspired candles. Finally a few days before boarding a flight to Seattle, for the final stop of the Eras Tour in Vancouver I pulled the dress of my dreams back out. And stayed up until 1am the night before the flight finishing all the machine sewing. And spent three hours in the reading room of the @seattlepubliclibrary central branch hand sewing the waist band the day before the show. And didn’t see the straps down until about 3 hours before Gracie Abrams took the stage. And that’s the story of the Folklore dress that’s been being made as long as the Eras Tour has been going on. I love the dress & getting to make something inspired by one of my favorite albums. There’ll be more to come on all the outfits I made but for now this dress deserves a moment to shine. #v1735 initial full sew-up after making a bunch of changes based on YouTube and IG guidance and tested with a quick bodice toile. I graded from S top to M bottom and brought the side and underarm seams in at least 1.5cm. I brought the neck V up 12cm and removed the seam allowance so the top bodice could be cut on the fold. That required me to draft a neck facing. I converted the back bodice and front skirt to be cut on the fold as well. Obviously I omitted the zipper. To accommodate fabric limitations I removed about 6cm from the side of each skirt piece grading to the pattern above the knee. I also had to take 10cm each off the ties to fit the fabric. And the pockets had to be widened 😇 This pattern and colours are a lot bolder than most of my selections but was too high quality & compelling to leave at the op shop. The length was at least 3m but a narrow width and I used nearly all of it. It has decent drape for a quilting cotton. Overall this feels like a win. It goes over my head, has lovely drama and swish, and sits where I want under the bust. The skirt is plenty big despite the pattern changes. This dress was the 12th one that I had made for Croatia trip. For some reason, I ended up not wearing, only to wear it to church today. I made the dress and it is better than I could have hoped for! This is the Vogue #v9253 #v1735 that I made to wear to a friend's wedding. It was such a special day, ceremony by the beach, reception cruising the river til late in the evening. The dress: the toile I made (size L) was way too big even though my measurements put me between a L/XL according to the pattern. I sized down to a medium and graded a little at the waist to give a little breathing room. Made my own facing for the neckline. Took 6cm off the hem and sewed up the v-neckline. Fabric: A polyester satin from #johnosfabrics. It was the first fabric that caught my eye when I walked in the door and it was meant to be! Thanks to my partner Dan for putting up with the late night sewing and constant questions about fitting. At my first frocktails (Melbourne Frocktails in 2022) I spotted someone I thought was one of the most stylish people I'd ever seen. Turns out it was @sewn.by.moi who was wearing a #v1735 by @simplicitymccallsaustralia sewn in an olive green velvet. Three years later I was in an op shop when I spotted 2 metres of mustard velvet (probably meant for upholstery) I knew just what I'd make with it. I shortened the bodice of this pattern and also took a fair bit off the length as I only had 2 metres of fabric to play with. I've made this pattern a few times but this is the first time I haven't adjusted the deep v. As usual it was a simple sew with a big impact. The only mod was the center seam left open for some leg. One of my favourite makes to date and went the whole evening without any indecent exposure, no tape or anything! black Winslow shorts! 🖤 a staple i knew i needed so much that i cut and sewed them up two days before we left for japan 🇯🇵 and yet, they’ve given me grief since the day i pulled them off the machine 🪡 first, the invisible zipper split the first time i pulled them on in our hotel room, leaving me trapped in half-zipped shorts i didn’t want to literally rip off my body (their loss also ruined so many of my carefully planned capsule wardrobe outfits) 🩳 and now, with a new shiny exposed zip (i purchased in Japan), the teeth catch constantly and that cheeky gap at the top that i left, it’s too much—right? 😬 do we think i could get away with it if i sew the hook and eye a bit farther in on the waistband? or should i abandon ship and simply put the regular invisible zip back in? 🛟 either way, back to the machine again! . . . pattern: #winslowculottes by @helens__closet size: 14 adjustments: shortened winslows (view a) by 2” / and swapped the inseam pockets for waist-anchored ones (my fav are from #v9327, but I also use the ones from #v1735), swapped the invisible zip for an exposed one (results may vary) fabric: zarria black ultrasoft rayon and recycled polyester twill from @moodfabrics (a staple, a workhorse, pls make it in more colors i beg u) making a basic as complex as possible: my joie de vivre . . . #travelsewing #winslowculotteshack #madewithmood #stillsewingstories #sewingfails #millennialsewist #nysewist #moodfabrics #sewbasic

I've written up a blog post about what I made, enjoyed and generally got up to during 2023. See the blog for the full ramble, but a few highlights: 1) Visiting Marrakesh in November to celebrate my 40th birthday 🎂 (wearing @closetcorepatterns #PietraPants & a @sonnydraws tee). 2) Making a second #V9253 / #V1735 (& matching headband with my fabric scraps) to wear to my cousin's wedding. 3) Having a good sort of my repairs/UFOs baskets and finding this #V1558 dress waiting for a few final seams to be sewn, just in time to wear it on a weekend break in Paris. 4) Falling in love with Our Flag Means Death and making a @dpstudio_fashion #le203 bomber jacket in the same fabric used by the costume design team, which I have worn constantly since. 5) Visiting Japan to belatedly celebrate Phil's 40th birthday, which fell during the peak of covid/lockdown (wearing a top which will be my next pattern release). 6) Weaving regularly this year (I completed a bath mat, and three scarves to give as gifts) thanks to joining a regular class, plus attending a week-long summer school in weaving double cloth during August. 7) Completing this #M8318 vintage Laura Ashley set which I started on my 39th birthday in time to wear it for my 40th. I have some really fun projects in progress to start 2024 including woven shoelaces, patchwork shorts, a new coat for Phil plus the moomin jumper I've been knitting off and on forever, and the first holiday is booked, travelling to New York by liner 🚢
