This is the #v8577 with some modifications. I saw Sian from @kittenishbehaviour wearing this dress and fell in love with it and followed her YouTube tutorials to create one for myself. I made 2 and was curious about what a #v8577 would look like with loops and buttons plus a belt so I created this version. Fabric is from @ladymcelroyfabrics and belt buckle is from @londonbuttoncompany sleeves are from #v1934 #sewnwithbig5june

Final step: buttonholes! And they are not awesome 😂 oh well luckily you can barely see them. That’s the nice part of photographing your work, you get to see it from a distance, more like an impartial observer might see you. I also feel they’re placed a little too far from the edge if you follow the pattern markings, which I did. Oh well, there’s no unpicking of 10 buttonholes haha 😂 life’s too short for that. While I wait for the fray-check to dry, I’ll ponder leaving the white buttons as is (very nice quality pearly whites!) or swapping to larger buttons that might fill the space better… what would you choose? Wrapped up the Vouge #V8577 dress. Resized the bodice completely and I think I did ok for my first try. The top fits nicely. The skirt portion is heavy and pulls at the waist/pocket area, which then causes the hem to look longer on the sides and the back to look droopy. The skirt is so big that it's hard to notice the hem though. Overall a nice pattern with excellent sized pockets, if I buy a copy in my size range for next time. Although I really need to stop sewing dresses. Hardly wear them at all. Patterns and stripes at play! It’s Dress Friday! Posted by Helen @helen_sew_evans “This project has taken me quite a while! I’ve had this pattern and fabric combo tucked away in the ‘to make’ pile for a couple of years now and finally took the plunge! Once I’d familiarised myself with the pattern pieces I questioned a) whether stripes were the right choice given the grainline on some of the pieces and b) whether I’d even manage to get this dress out of the 3 metres I had available given the pattern matching needed. But I seem to have gotten away with both! I actually quite like the way the stripes don’t always fall vertically. It’s fully lined (double the work 😅) and has some lovely bias binding blind hem hand sewing all suggested and stolen from @kittenishbehaviour in her sew alongs for this dress (which were SO helpful). I’m not a fan of figuring out the methodology behind the instructions on the big 4 pattern brands, so video tutorials are so much better for me! Super pleased with all the pattern matching on the pockets and throughout. Had to fix something weird on the shoulder area at the top of the armhole as well - I added some interfacing and took the seam in another 1/4” and seems to have helped with the weird ripply thing going on (swipe to see details). Considering this a win - it’s a lovely dress and I have some Art Gallery poplin lined up for another one, but might eliminate the skirt lining next time for a more casual look. I am absolutely happy with my latest made using #vogue8577 bought from @spotlightmalaysia. The pattern is vintage inspired fully lining full skirt front buttons dress. Silk/sateen mixed fabric used for both outer and lining for more flowy effect. Overall almost 10 meter fabric used for whole dress and it does gives some weight. I am simply waiting for the right moment to wear it. The giant pockets took awhile to sew but worth every effort. I like to wear my #v8577 dresses when I go out because the large pockets mean I don't need a purse. All my current versions are very brightly colored so I made this more subdued one. Some events just call for a darker palette. No changes in construction, I used the sew a long by @kittenishbehaviour again. Fabric is a batik from @harts_fabric and buttons are from @moodfabrics (old stash find). #sewing #dress

My birthday dress! I'm going to the Eden Project for work today so it seemed an ideal chance to wear my new nature-y dress! This is the #v8577 that I squeezed out of 4m of @ladymcelroyfabrics Damselfly fabric that @duncanmonro bought me for Christmas many moons ago! I love the splash of colour on monochrome, it brings the teeniest bit of sunshine into my clothes while letting me live my monochrome goth dream! I've lost the instructions for this pattern so I used the @kittenishbehaviour tutorial with some major adaptations to make it unlined. Her tip to extend the facings is a lifesaver, it makes it so much neater. Turning out super cute! 🥰 the cotton lawn has a nice crispness for the skirt 💃 and the pockets are a statement on their own I ran out of lining to finish so here is where we’re at. Perhaps going forward I should only start when all of the materials are ready, this is the third time this year where I put a project on hold waiting to get lining or a zipper.. 🙃 or maybe, that’s the nature of sewing from fabric on hand, rather than buying fresh materials every time. This is a lot of hem! 😆❤️ I thought it would be smart to hand baste the hem first, to avoid roping and twisting. My next project has been identified, and it’s a pretty dress for everyday wear! I’ll be making another Vogue #v8577, this time in a fabric I really love and not a wearable mock-up like the two I made a few years ago. Unfortunately I will need to modify my pattern pieces a bit because I’ve changed size somewhat since I first modified them a few years ago. Finally started crackalackin on this flared shirt dress pattern #Vogue8577 after taking forever to cut all the damn pieces out. The lining is basically all done and I just started on the dress (outer? Shell?) bodice. I'm glad I did the lining first bc I am crap at gathers and had to redo some things, however since it has no wrong side I sewed the front bodice pieces on backwards twice 😩 and had to redo the darts to face the right way dammit lol. Fabric is a totally Cyndi-color green cotton shirting from @moodfabrics (apparently an import from ESPAÑA), lining is cotton poplin also from Mood, but not Spain. Throw Back Thursday ……. to 14 weeks ago and my Vogue 8577 dress that I realised I hadn’t shared details of! 💚 I had several grand ideas for a wedding guest dress and had a mighty fine attempt at smocking the bodice, however the volume of fabric didn’t work, so I decided to ‘KISS’ and stick with the original pattern. 🤭 As to be expected with an event outfit, there were a few dramas! 🙄🤣 I finished with plenty of time to spare, hung the dress up and thought I was all done. However, despite letting it hang before hemming, and with just a week or so to go, I realised that the finished hem had dropped all over the place! Fortunately I had been following @kittenishbehaviour and managed to snag a ‘pinchy-pinchy’ gauge online which made corrections to the 6m of hem much more straight forward, albeit I couldn’t face re working the lining, so that had a very unglamorous chop with the pinking shears! 😬 My cousin sent me through the wedding day photos recently, as I completely forgot to take any of the dress in action! I didn’t toile the pattern, just adjusted the bodice as I made it. Length was reduced by 5” or 6” as I knew it would be way too long otherwise….I’m 5’2”! I had the buttons covered professionally by Button Covering Truro who were brilliant! The fabric was deadstock from my local store and had a fabulous nap and drape….no idea what the composition is! I can heartily recommend this pattern! The fabric requirement at 5m of both main and lining is daunting, but construction is simple and the result is a super pleasing twirly outfit…..definitely one for the #sianmademedoit entries! 🤣🤣🤣😘 #v8577 #vogue8577 #imakemyownclothes

Does anyone else have a fabric association in their head? For me it’s any Lady McElroy cotton lawn print that I buy 5 metres of. My default idea is always my favourite shirt dress, the Vogue 8577. I love this pattern so much and, more importantly, I wear the ones I’ve made frequently. The 5 metres of fabric also allows me to squeeze a little scrap busting project in as well like the Vogue 9345 you saw earlier this year. I love repeating patterns, especially with precious fabrics as there is security and comfort in making something I know I love and wear out of a fabric that was expensive and sometimes irreplaceable. Progress ❤️ Cotton lawn with cotton lining, super cool and summery. (As it snows again here yesterday 😂) It has a nice weight to it too with the full skirt layers. Part of me thinks is this too frilly and poofy for someone in their 40s - the other part embraces the wear whatever you want philosophy! It’s a balance. I wear construction-vibe clothes all week and crave wearing something pretty when I’m off work 💃 To finish still: armholes, hem, buttons and buttonholes 🪡 also might add some stay tape along the neckline to keep its shape! 🧡 ✨ Perfect Twirling Dress ✨ 💜 This dress pattern Vogue V8577 has been on my to-make list for a very long time! I've set aside quite a few fabrics I want to make it in and kicked off the first one with this retro vintage floral I picked up at @thesewinglair It's a really fabric hungry pattern and needs at least 3m.. I'm so keen to do the version with short sleeves and a collar but couldn't quite squeeze it out in this fabric (I had 3m but of a narrow width). I also shortened the bodice, and then when I tried the bodice on realised it was too short and I should never have shortened it! One thing I find when sewing is that I think I know my measurement vs the pattern measurement, and I almost always get it wrong. Anyway, I let out every horizontal seam above the bodice (shoulders etc) and it sort of worked out. I also found the sizing too small and had to let out every waist seam too! So this dress was a bit of a mission, and I didn't feel that great about myself afterwards (all that letting out of seams) and so I haven't worn it out until today! But it feels great and fits with good ease now and I'm happy. Oh Em Gee! 🤩 Game changer gadget for solo hemming skirts and dresses!
