Does anyone else's thoughts drift to sewing projects when they can't sleep? I've been dreaming of making a floaty #Zimmermann inspired dress almost since my niece got engaged 2 years ago, whilst being conscious I'm probably twice the age and chunkier than the average Zimmermann customer! However, my heart was set on it and, when Vogue #V1934 came out, the pattern was perfect for what I had in mind. The only change I made was to omit the cuff in favour of an elasticated sleeve. The linen viscose mix is ex-Zara from #croftmill I added a muslin lining, made self-covered buttons and added insertion lace on the yokes and lace on the bodice and waist. It's not 100% perfect on the inside but I really enjoyed wearing it as a change from trousers and it felt special on my niece's blustery wedding day. I hope I can dress it down and wear it again. My husband was well dressed too but, at time of posting, I haven't seen a photo of the two of us yet. PS it has pockets!

This is the #v8577 with some modifications. I saw Sian from @kittenishbehaviour wearing this dress and fell in love with it and followed her YouTube tutorials to create one for myself. I made 2 and was curious about what a #v8577 would look like with loops and buttons plus a belt so I created this version. This is #v1934 @simplicitymccallsuk made in a cotton poplin from Taobao. This pattern has so many features that i adore; the waistband, buttoned front with loops, collar. Cute bodice and the zip at the back. The pattern instructions were easy to follow. For reference, I cut a size 10 and the only adjustment I made was the length of the skirt.

I just finished my Vogue 1934 dress in Minerva Exclusive Petal Spray Cotton Sateen. I know I love this base cloth (because so easy to work with and suits so many different dress and blouse patterns), but I was a bit surprised when a lady in my local coffee shop asked me what the fabric was and asked me if she could have a stroke! It really is an ideal texture and weight. This Petal Spray print is also ideal for Autumn because it doesn’t shriek ‘Summer’ in the way that many floral cotton prints do. I was excited to try Vogue 1934 because I liked the slightly vintagey look of it and I knew that although there was a lot of gathering, the slight drapeyness of the Minerva sateen would prevent the unflattering puffy look that can result from gathers. I love a big bishop sleeve. I might tighten the cuffs (as well as lengthening them) to create more drama. I felt that the sleeves on the envelope photograph looked bigger than on my version. I also liked the button loop details. However, having sewn 25 loops and half ball buttons, I’ve rather gone off them. Sooo time consuming and also really tricky to make accurate!when I first tried the dress on it gaped just below the waistband. I fixed that with a hook and eye, but it reminded me that this can be a problem with loop buttons. I will be wearing this with a slip just in case. I was grateful that the fabric had a busy pattern as there are a lot of details on this dress that could look untidy and show up any lack of skill on a plain colour, but I’m generally very happy with this make and I think I’ll get a lot of wear out of it. #minervabrandambassador #minervamakers #Minervamakes #v1934 #vogue1934 #minervaexclusivefabric #sewover50 #lovesewing #lovesewingmag #lovesewingmagazine

Well it’s been a while between posts…taking longer than I planned to get back into sewing! I’m doing a year of no shopping though so have done a bit of seeing this year! I am still in the burgundy season! "Technically, this isn’t my first make of 2025—I’m just tackling unfinished projects from 2024! All that was left on this one was attaching the zipper and sleeves, but it had been sitting unfinished for 2 months. Sometimes, I lose my sewing mojo, and rather than forcing it, I take a break. This dress was a tad bit challenging for me. In the process, I realized the waist was too tight( apparently experienced sewists can make mistakes, too🤷🏾‍♀️😔), so I had to add extra fabric to the bodice before I could even think about the zipper. By the time I got to it, I felt overwhelmed and set it aside. Last week, I decided to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did! Another project ticked off the list, and It looks prettier in person than in the screen. ✨️ Fabric: crepe fabric from @hobbycraft.uk Pattern: Vogue pattern #V1934, Mods: Finished this version with long sleeves featuring snap button cuffs for a polished touch. Buttons on the bodice are purely decorative, so I skipped them on the skirt, relying on a hidden zipper for practicality. My posts have been few and far between lately. Life and hospital rubbish have got in the way of being able to fully relax and enjoy my sewing. I've been completely out of sorts. Thankfully I have just managed to avert more potential surgery for another 6 months so I can now get back into my usual rhythm and get back to my happy place and my sewing machine! I have managed to make myself this gorgeous number this month though which I'm entering into the @simplicitymccallsuk challenge #sewnwithbig5june. It's the Vogue #v1934. The pattern has been in my stash for a long time and I've been desperate to make it! I'm really pleased with the result and it was super easy to fit and sew! It looks much more difficult than it actually is. The most arduous part was hand sewing 17 buttons! I also hand stitched the front closed on the inside as I'm never going to get into the dress by undoing all of the buttons as it has an invisible zip at the back. Fabric from my stash. I want to share this and some lessons about finishing toiles! I’ve now finished my toile of the dressmakers’ ball gown and I wished I’d done so before starting the final garment as I would have made a few tweaks. That’s not to say I am unhappy with my ball gown. I guess that’s the point of the toiling process and I didn’t complete it! Next time… I think this is quite a pretty dress, but I’m not too keen on the fabric - it feels a bit stiff! That’s why I chose it for a toile and because it’s a viscose crepe like the cobra corsage I used. I made a mistake on the placket on this dress which I haven’t corrected so one side stands proud and the other curls outward so you can see the understitching. I think i attached at least one side upside down. 🙈 My seams don’t line up down the centre back either. At least I got these parts right on my ball gown. The big adjustment I need is a narrow shoulder adjustment as the sleeve falls off the edge of my shoulder and because I didn’t attach the sleeve I didn’t know before starting my ball gown. I should have at least basted one side in. I think it’s more noticeable on this dress than the ball gown for some reason but I needed one in both cases. I don’t like the sleeves either on this dress so I would finish with elastic when I make the dress again. I’m wearing this out today anyway and we’re going for pizza. I’m wearing with my Friday Pattern Company Heather blazer, tights, cowboy boots, cardigan and belt. This is the #v1934 in size 14 with a 4.5cm swayback adjustment with a hacked waistband and skirt.

The first thing I did after returning from Costume College is to finish this dress I have been working on. Still waiting for my buttons to arrive but the sewing is done. Pattern : Vogue #v1934 Fabric: Liberty London Tana Lawn This pattern has quite a few pieces to put together but nothing is particularly difficult. The hardest part for me was actually making the button loops. A fabric turner tool would be really handy here. Unfortunate I didn’t have one that would work with such small loops so I had to turn them with simple needle and thread 🪡 The pattern is well drafted and did not require much alteration. I did find the armband a bit loose but decided to leave them as is. The dress features both button closure in front as well as back zipper. It’s possible to go without the back zipper but having multiple options is always nice. I think the dress has a bit of vintage Gunne Sax feel to it. Especially when made with Liberty London floral fabric. #V1934 | Been awhile! 😂 How are y’all doing? I’ve been meaning to upload this a few weeks back but of course, life had other plans for me. I went back to do postgrad and I underestimated how much time that would have taken me. 😪 So before I get busier, I thought I’ll take a bit out of my day to share this dress I made using a popular Vogue dress, as I learnt last week the sewing community called it a Zimmerman dupe. I was nervous about this one as there were a few fiddly pieces and the shank buttons were a nightmare. It was my first time doing self-covering ones and while I got it in the end, I’ve now lost two front covers - between my car, the washing machine, the clothesline and Perth there is two front covered shank buttons in this fabric. 😂 Don’t like front shank buttons? No fear, for there is an invisible zipper at the back!! I think for my next sew, I might hack the front to get rid of the buttons, or at least make the waist stretchy and keep the top buttons for show. Vogue V1934 When I first saw #v1934 I instantly liked it from the pattern envelope. Then I was browsing the @moodfabrics website and I spotted the fabric @simplicity_creative_group used. While I loved the fabric used on the envelope I decided to order a similar boarder print fabric with a deeper background. I ordered 4 yards of this Exclusive Baroque Cotton Voile. I really enjoyed sewing this dress. While the pattern has a button front it also has an invisible zip in the back. I made a size 12 with no major adjustments. The things I did differently were to attach the collar after the zip. I took off the original cuffs because I didn’t like the closure being with the seam not on the side of the cuff. I added a plain cuff that I could slide my hands in and out of easily. I also hand stitched the front bodice together. I did not love doing the loops and buttons & it wasn’t holding the front completely closed. I had to move the buttons a few times to get them in a spot I liked. Since I didn’t need to use the buttons I decided to stitch the front closed. I have lots of dresses but was excited to make something for an occasion. I wore this over the weekend to services for my cousin’s bat mitzvah. It was very comfortable, I felt appropriately dress for the occasion and I received a few compliments. I think I would made this pattern again. Does anyone else's thoughts drift to sewing projects when they can't sleep? I've been dreaming of making a floaty #Zimmermann inspired dress almost since my niece got engaged 2 years ago, whilst being conscious I'm probably twice the age and chunkier than the average Zimmermann customer! However, my heart was set on it and, when Vogue #V1934 came out, the pattern was perfect for what I had in mind. The only change I made was to omit the cuff in favour of an elasticated sleeve. The linen viscose mix is ex-Zara from #croftmill I added a muslin lining, made self-covered buttons and added insertion lace on the yokes and lace on the bodice and waist. It's not 100% perfect on the inside but I really enjoyed wearing it as a change from trousers and it felt special on my niece's blustery wedding day. I hope I can dress it down and wear it again. My husband was well dressed too but, at time of posting, I haven't seen a photo of the two of us yet. PS it has pockets!

Then I was browsing the @moodfabrics website and I spotted the fabric @simplicity_creative_group used. I ordered 4 yards of this Exclusive Baroque Cotton Voile. I really enjoyed sewing this dress. While the pattern has a button front it also has an invisible zip in the back. I made a size 12 with no major adjustments. I have lots of dresses but was excited to make something for an occasion.
