I went to Melbourne to see my lovely friend @mai.making (she took the photos) and I’m posting about it a month later because the PEM has been doing its thing. Was especially excited to go see Kusama at the @ngvmelbourne! The skirt is inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkin sculptures- I first saw her work when I was five and that particularly has stuck with me. The fabric was hand painted with screen printing ink and has internal hitches so it can be a normal skirt or a bubble skirt. Also have included a sartorial reference in the necklace to her sculpture Narcissus Garden. • • • Long list of these today because I wore so many things at once: Skirts are self drafted- the black one is a linen from @wearethefabricstore, the polka dot one was painted on fabric I got on clearance from @sewinggem and then lined in an op shop $2 special (which I knew for sure was cotton because it’s the same fabric my first ever sewing project was made with) Top is @simplicitymccallsaustralia #S8452 in merino from #thefabricstore Gloves are also self drafted- made from an Aldi merino thermal top that I was allergic to the seam finishing of. Boots are @jobear_boots Belt is @iefrancis Not sure about the beret because I unpicked the tag when I got it from the op shop years back. Who doesn't love flirty animal prints for fall? I decided to create an entire retro-inspired look complete with my matching headband, patent leather belt, black capris, and red shoes for a pop of color! The entire ensemble gives off a "disco-meets-red carpet" vibes ✨⁠ ⁠ For this look, I used:⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽 The 1950's vintage Simplicity Pattern wrap top. It's 1 piece of fabric so it was efficient and very easy to make⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽 An adjustment from the 1950's pattern direction - I didn't do the catch-stitch, instead I did a blind hem stitch using my sewing machine⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽 The soft Black and Choco Leopard Skin French Terry fabric from @stylishfabric. All hems of the top are stitched by hand ("Hexenstich" in German, "Russian cross stitch" or "Feather stitch" according to google? I'm a bit unsure about this one. It's @simplicitymccallsuk S8452 which is a very simple pattern to make. It only has one pattern piece, so I intentionally waited for the @minervadotcom half price sale. I think the back seam is odd, it sticks out a bit due to where it sits and I've tried having it higher and lower (getting this on is a trick in itself and they give instructions) but it doesn't make much difference. I'm a bit disappointed, I'd hoped this would be great for remnants as it doesn't need much fabric and it is super quick to put together. I'll see how much I wear it before I make another. The universe has been against me procuring this dress pattern for a long time. The first time I bought the wrong size and realised a year later when I went to make it. The second time I ordered the right size but only realised I was sent the wrong one once I’d gotten all my fabric together. Finally got the pattern swapped and am very happy with how it worked out (despite the amount of swearing there was while I was piecing together the colour blocks for the bust).
