When I went to thread the serger with matching thread I was disturbed to find the color I used for a dress on June 14, 2022 was still in the serger. My first V1921. This one is made in a thicker than average cotton broadcloth. I made a couple of little alterations. My main problem with this pattern was that the original design was open to the waist. I am not a ‘free the nipple’ sort of girl. I am nearly sixty and I like substantial underwear so I raised the neck opening, also shortening the bodice by 1/2” so that the yoke wouldn’t look out of proportion. This brings the waist tie right up under the bust and gives the bodice a very fitted look. By shortening the slash in the neck by 2 1/2” I can just conceal a low cut bra under the dress, which would be impossible were it unaltered. I really love this pattern and have already made it a second time, but the flared sleeves on the original are not for me. The reverse of the fabric would show at the wrist and the sleeve hems would dangle in my cooking if not my dinner. For this one I simply elasticated the hems and I think this looks quite appropriate to the 70s style of the dress. My second V1921 has little contrast cuffs as well as the contrasting yoke. I think the black yoke needs more care in altering if you want to avoid the shape looking clumsy. With a busy print like this I’m confident that you can just raise the opening and it will look fine. So here it finally is! Probably my favourite make of this year. Fitted and a little bit fancy, but still very wearable for everyday Vogue 1921 is going to be a pattern I make over and over again. Initially I rejected it because the neck was slashed to the waist making any kind of normal underwear impossible. I agonised over how to change the neckline because I saw one project where the raised neck created an unattractive block of solid colour below the slash and looked out of proportion. I raised it simply on my previous version of this style and it looked fine because the seam lines were hidden by a busy print. With a black contrasting yoke I was more worried about proportion, but by not raising the neckline more than 2 1/2” and shortening the bodice 1/2” I think I’ve got away with it. I elasticated the sleeve hems on my previous version because I didn’t like the flared sleeve of the original design. This time I went the whole hog and made little contrasting cuffs to match the yoke and slightly widened the lower sleeve. I love this version even more than the previous one because of the way it fits and drapes in the Minerva Raspberry Satin Back Crepe. The waist ties bring it in right under the bust, but the skirt and bishop sleeves have a movement and a softness of shape that I couldn’t get in cotton. The crepe is a little more slippery and difficult to press than the cotton but I really feel it’s worth it for the finished effect. Gathering the sleeves and body onto that very curvy yoke and then attaching the facing neatly is a bit tricky in any fabric but despite a bit of cursing and swearing at the time I felt I managed to make a reasonable job of it and I think most home sewists could do it (with a bit of swearing in the process). #MinervaBrandAmbassador #minervamakers #Minervabrandambassador #minervamakes #minervamakers #v1921 #sewover50 #70sfashion #voguesewingpatterns #raisingneckline
