My very first post on this account, so I thought I'd start with sewing plans for 2023, and what better way than my #makenine2023 plans! I've been doing #makenine privately for a few years now, although usually struggling to find nine patterns that I want to make at the start of the year. This awkward 3/4 turn, shoulder sloping pose almost makes this shirt look like it fits... But it does not! At least not well (swipe to see a better representation and how Pepper and I feel about it). I’ve worn oversized everything since I was in middle school and part of my sewing process has become addressing fit and the issues it brings up with my body. Which is hard! And it’s really hard to make something that fits well, especially when you have medical devices that add several extra inches to your hip and arms. One of my goals when I began sewing was to make clothes that worked with my insulin pump and cgm, and adding things like buttonholes to pockets (and pockets to everything) are easy adjustments to accommodate my medical tools. But, sometimes adding pockets that hold a pump make a lightweight dress pull on my neck and become uncomfortable to wear. And I don’t know, everything else seems very hard and doesn’t feel very accessible or even worth it when I could just keep wearing things that don’t fit and not have to think about or feel things. I was trying to stay positive but fuck that, this is hard and makes me feel hard things about accessibility, disability and my body. Summer has been great! My son was visiting and soon my daughter will be! The shirt I made is Simplicity s9133. The fabric was purchased on clearance at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago. The shorts are a 1984 McCalls pattern 9021. The pattern is a size 10 so I had to grade it up so it would fit me. I really like how it turned out. #McCalls9021 #S9133 #SimplicityS9133

Just finished this in time for afternoon concert at the Opera House. Made using #libertytanalawn which I got from @tessutifabrics earlier this week. Dress is amazingly light and cool, perfect for Sydney summers. This jersey top was created using the simplicity #S9133 pattern and this beautiful detailed stretch fabric by minerva.com. This was my first stretch fabric make, which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. There are many helpful tutorials but I found Lauren Guthrie's video guides really useful. Especially when adding the collar to this project. This weekend I wore Simplicity 9133. These is a great top for a few reasons! 1. I made it! 2. It’s not see through so I don’t need to wear a tank top underneath. 3. Not so form fitting so if a have some bloating no one will know! 4. Crinkle rayon fabric is light and airy in the hot temps. 5. Documenting my new linen square neck top. I used the @simplicity_creative_group pattern #s9133 and fabric from @fabricsstorecom left over from a dress project. I made the size 10, which calls for measurements smaller than mine but fits well. I cut several inches off of the length & skipped the side slits. Worn here with my black cotton twill @byhandlondon #bhljackie trousers in the size 4. Starting on my first entry for #sewupcycle22wip run by @notes_from_the_sewing_room and @sew.little.time Im using a well loved, faded homemade tablecloth from the 70's, that I picked up from @hawkesbury_remakery . It was the @marimekko label that caught my eye, but a difficult design to plan around and then the added challenge of fading and stains. I made a top this week based on #simplicity #s9133, but I made long sleeves instead of short, and as usual, adjusted the bodice for a full bust. Fabric is only £6/m from Boyes. @boyesstores I made a covered button using a motif from the fabric and a rouleau loop to hold it in place. Tip for making your rouleau loop is: 1. Make your tube right sides together and close one end. 2. Insert a drinking straw at the open end. 3. Push a wooden skewer into the closed end, and the tube will turn the right way out!
