I made a Cape 😻 - Vogue 8959. Using some of my lovely 5 metres designer black cotton blend (Lycra/spandex) from @tessutifabrics. It matches my TAL pants and TAL skirt. The recent cold change through Canberra means I can finally wear my new cape. Autumn is my favourite season here, so many beautiful leaves and crisp mornings but it goes so quickly! 🌑 Witch in the woods ❄️ 🌘 A surprise Portland snowstorm meant I was able to finish this fairytale-inspired cloak way way quicker than expected - and just in time for @marlowelune ‘s February garment-making prompt “Winterwear”! 🌗 The patterns I used were Vogue’s #v8959 for the cape and @spaghetti_western_sewing ‘s *free* pattern - the #SWSPearlHeadscarf ! The headscarf is one size, and I used a size Large in view B for the cape - though adjusted the shoulders quite a bit (which was a surprise as I am fairly broad-shouldered!) 🌖 Both the outer and lining fabrics were thrifted - the outer fabric is a wool? Wool blend? In a really gorgeous grey-purple that I found as actual yardage at Goodwill, and the lining is a burgundy subtle-stripe bedsheet. ⭐️ Vogue Winter Cape - V8959 ⭐️ 🧵 Fabrics - Alberini Wool Cashmere blend in Cobalt and Habotai Silk in Princess Blue (both from @moodfabrics) 🪡 Difficulty - Beginner as intended/Intermediate as shown — It’s getting to the point where every time I finish something I think it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever made… I’m not complaining. This was my Christmas gift to my sister and I wanted it to be something special she would reach for hopefully for years. I made sure to make a mock-up to get a sense for how all of the pieces would go together and this was a good chance for me to practice the bound buttonholes (I’m so glad I did because it really elevated the piece and when it came time to cut into the beautiful wool I didn’t feel terrified). I had originally wanted to make interior pockets on the front panels and spent a lot of time thinking about how I could achieve it without it showing on the facing or weighing down the lining. I eventually decided not to, and I think it was the right choice to keep the drape uniform. This pattern is marked as “Very Easy” by Vogue and for the most part I would agree! I think the only way I significantly changed it was to use bound buttonholes instead of machine sewn and adding embroidery to the back of the lining. If this style appeals to you, I think it would be a fun project and a great way to get a nice piece of outerwear with minimal tailoring, but you would need to feel comfortable working from a Big 4 pattern first. Me made cape with help from my Granny and the wise women around me, who gave me advice and supported me when I thought it had all gone wrong. I kinda wish looking at the weather forecast I’d gone with the shower curtain option for the lining but hey at least I feel encased in love when I wear it. Researching the evolution of capes is quite interesting as they were longer in the 1910s and 20s then shorter in the 30s, longer in the 40s, shorter in the 50s and longer again in the 60s! I figure an average length should get me through any decade! Granny gave me the beautiful Welsh Wool many years ago. I had the best time at the Dressmaker’s Ball last night! I made a @cashmerette Honeybourne dress from Ahead of the Curve book, with a gathered skirt. The fabric is a pleasingly rustle-y pink taffeta form @fabricgodmother. The belt buckle was vintage from my stash which I’m very happy to have finally used. Swipe also to see my #v8959 cape! And now the garment details! My dress was a mashup of a self-drafted bodice block + the VERY extra flared sleeve and skirt from #s9038 — I basically made the same bodice and sleeve as the costume pattern, but using my block instead of doing a full bust adjustment. I’m not sure when I decided to make the dress into a two piece set. Did I think it made this more wearable as separates next time I’m out storming the castle? 🤷‍♀️ At the last minute I decided on grommets and a lace-up back instead of a zipper because, to be honest, I wanted to use my kam press. Both capes were from a king size duvet cover. WOW CAPES NEED SO MUCH HEMMING. My cape was way too long and too big and I ended up with about eight inches dragging in castle mud, only the best mud for me! The cape swallowed up my dress. However! I love the way it caught the wind. Next time I would just find some extra sturdy way to secure it around my neck and size down. I liked the shape of the hood from Peter’s cloak, so I made one for my own. Speaking of his pattern… check out the simplicity costume I used for his coat. If you can get past the alien picture on the front of the packet, the shape of the coat is very gothy and cool and I would 100% make it again out of a different fabric. I cut it on the button edge of the duvet cover to save time, but other than that made zero modifications. It fit him great! AND I got to use the decorative stitches on my sewing machine. I went through an entire fresh spool of Gutermann thread and the first season of The Black Tapes podcast on these two capes. Is this look historically accurate? Ha! Only to the me that’s still in love with mid-90s Delia*s Catalog. Add a choker and platforms you’re ready to rave. One thing I discovered while doing this project is that I felt so free and happy knowing no one was going to be observing it, or judging it, or comparing it to other costumes. I made a cape in this bubblegum wool viscose from @thefineclothcompany and I love it! The wool was beautiful to cut and sew (and look at). It includes my first bound buttonhole, which I've included a picture of (because I'm proud of it). A stitch school video from @sewoverit guided me through it. It's lined with a viscose fabric from @drapersfabrics. I have enough left to make something else, which I'm looking forward to too because it was also lovely. It's a Vogue pattern, V8959. I took out some shape at the shoulders, as like others, I found it stuck out a little oddly. Have you ever watched a show or movie and wanted to recreate an outfit? That happened to me with the new season of Emily In Paris! The very first scene of season 3 with this pink feather cape was an immediate love at first sight. I knew I had to recreate it! I’m awful at documenting my makes but I had an especially productive year. My goal was two makes a month and most months I exceeded that by quite a bit, even while being in school.
