Fancy pirate shirt #2!!! 💃🏼🏴‍☠️This one was a real challenge.... hint: don’t make your first project using #silkchiffon #biascut. I learned a ton, hand basted all the things, made some silly mistakes, and have a wearable top at the end! 😍 Pattern is #vogue9006 in stripey silk chiffon with the bodice underlined with dark teal silk habotai. I used silk organza for interfacing the cuffs and the silk habotai for interfacing the back facing. I attempted to #sewprettyinside, but was foiled by accidentally slicing through my seam allowance and a silly mistake👇🏻 Silly mistake- pieced the back underlining on the bias- should have pieced it on the straight grain then cut the back underlining piece on the bias. Mr Silk junior gave me high praise for my #v9006 blouse. He said it was ready for the runway and not like the floofy things I usually make. He touched the fabric, said it was nice and I advised that this is what silk feels like. He ran his fingers over the buttons - they are asking to be touched. Pattern: modified #vogue9006 Fabric: in a gorgeous designer deadstock silk I got from @thefineclothcompany long ago. Modifications: 🪡 the blouse was in my ufo pile. I didn’t like the bubbled interfacing in the cuff nor the plastic white buttons. I also needed to shorten the sleeve. The cuff was already lengthened using an old 80s burda pattern. It got unpicked, the interfacing torn off, I cut off the button holes as the cuff needed to fit tighter around my wrist, particularly as I had removed the interfacing. I used the bridal button elastic ( don’t know what you call it. I left the self bias binding sewn at the sleeve and cuff seam ( another mod). 📍I needed 22 buttons! I much prefer these clear buttons. It’s a good thing I can just wriggle it over my wrist while done up. I’d also done a bad job of the hem even though it was hand sewn and instead I made a baby hem. 📍I have made the pattern before in a knit fabric. That was a toile. This time I decided to follow the pattern and didn’t cut the back bodice on the fold. It didn’t need a seam down the back, so if I make it again I’ll cut it on the fold again. I could see a version with flared sleeves and much shorter. 💎 I have some Swarovski crystals to hot glue randomly around the cowl neck but I’ve never done it before and I don’t want to make a mistake. Thanks to Ruan @theyorkshiresewgirl and Gabrielle @cloth_edit for hosting this challenge. It’s the highlight of my sewing calendar. A couple of people asked me for details of the outfit I wore to #so50frocktails on Friday evening, so here it is 😁 along with a photobombing dog! . My jacket is an old one, I can't remember when I made it, but I have made (I think) four jackets and a top from this pattern #Simplicity4082. This one is view F, made with a deadstock crushed velvet from a local designer and lined with something blue, slubby and taffeta-like (sorry, can't remember its origins!) I love this pattern and it's really comfortable to wear. I find raglan sleeves suit my shoulder shape. . The dress is a hack of #Vogue9006 which I made for Frocktails. I used view A, drafted a skirt (with pockets 👍🏻) from my waistline, and added a belt. The main fabric is a gorgeous viscose challis by Peter Horton Textiles which I bought from @lamazifabrics, and the lining is #bremsilk (it's a lightweight cupro) from @mandorsfabric . It has french seams throughout. It is a lovely weight and was so easy to wear. . I'm in love with this top! It was really easy to make and sews up quickly. Found this fabric in the clearance section @joann_stores and I don't think I spent more than $6 for it! I had a longish narrow strip of leftover fabric after making my #m7969 dress, so I decided to make this #v9006 cowl neck top. Other than the middle front panel, which has the neck and back collar attached, view A is made up of narrow pieces so was ideal for the fabric. I pieced the back collar, and french seamed the whole thing, as I had done with the dress. The construction is very clever and reminds me of the stokxhackertop . We are looking after our granddog this weekend while his parents are at a wedding in Helsinki, so took my new top with him and Orla to the "beach" and forest walk beside the Erskine Bridge yesterday afternoon. We saw planes, trains, automobiles and boats as well as lots of birds, but my phone battery ran out so photos were limited! . When I'd finished cutting out the top, I couldn't believe that I'd forgotten about the dress pockets again 🤦‍♀️, so I was very lucky in being able to find three leftovers of leftovers big enough for pocket pieces, and was able to piece the 4th 😅 . There are only tiny scraps left now, maybe enough for a scrunchie! Something I have been really enjoying recently is making multiple different garments from one print. I found this floral viscose in my local fabric store on the island and they had 6.5m left on the bolt for £8/m. I bought the lot! This might seem excessive but I always manage to make so many plans for one piece of fabric that I often experience "fabric paralysis" and I end up not making anything from the print I love! This print is not the first time I've experimented in this way (Savannah viscose I'm looking at you....👀) and I love how I've ended up with a beautiful summery dress (McCalls 8177) an Autumn appropriate dress (Butterick 5951) and a top (Vogue 9006) that I can wear all year round. There are sew-alongs available on the channel for all these patterns if you're interested. This is definitely something I want to repeat in the future. It will mean I buy less individual prints but hopefully that will make me more decided in my fabric choices and also mean my "precious" prints don't end up languishing in the stash for ever! Me Made May Day 7. I wore my Norman jumpsuit by Stylearc cut into pants with a Marnie blouse. #MMM day 8 . My pledge for mmm should probably be to wear the makes I’ve never or rarely worn. I’ve never worn this #s8640 dress. I think it was because the wool fabric was itchy around my neck without the right under layer. I paired it with #v9006 and loved it. The top is a pattern for wovens but it works great in a knit too. I was cruising around Spotlight and a lady asked me if I made my clothes and then asked if I sold them!! I have been asked a few times before by strangers. Does anyone else have that happen to them? Just goes to show that the uniqueness of home sewing and special fabric draws attention. Day 12 of #memademay2023 was all about sewing. Firstly I wore #s9596 jumper dress and #v9006 in Lady McElroy viscose crepe jersey. 🧵I trialled a Bernette overlocker/cover stitch machine at my local Bernina sewing centre and put down a deposit.💰💰 ✂️I have not posted the top before and it’s actually the first wear since I made it about 8 months ago. It just needed the right combination. ✂️the vogue pattern is for wovens. I was going through my experimenting with using knits instead of woven fabric. Last photo was my first go at this pattern in a knit. The shoulders were a bit wide but apart from that it’s great and produces something with elegance. I cut the back on the fold and made a band at the cuff, instead of the button up cuff. ✂️I purchased the top fabric online from Oz. Today I wore this sleeveless blouse with princess seams and cowl neck using #Vogue9006. The fabric is a super soft rayon print that I got from an estate sale in Los Altos, CA. It's very 90s and reminds me of #Frasier and all of the abstract art in his apartment. If I make another one of these tops, I will move the princess seams a little further out towards the side seams. Otherwise, I love how it turned out!

One silk and one vintage make this month to match my Insta handle and a third blouse. One of the 3 was a completed UFO and one new UFO was created, oh well win some lose some. The new ufo 🛸 is another silk blouse. Because the fabric is gorgeous designer deadstock and it needed some fixing up and a potential sleeve remodel, I decided not to rush completion. There is no replacing the fabric. 🥇Star make this month is the #v9006 silk blouse. I feel so glam in it. It was worth waiting the year to finally fix the cuff issues! Such lovely silk designer deadstock is hard to come by in NZ so I feel lucky to have scored it. Blouses featured this month because of the sewaprilblouse24 challenge when my world turns all blousey. I’m looking forward to a May making denim garments now. 👚I realised I used 3 different substrates, silk, linen and cotton. If I audited my me mades my guess is it comprises 40% cotton lawn,15%rayon/viscose, 20% linen, 5% cotton& viscose knits, 9% merino, 2% silk and 9% other. I loved the silk so much I must use up my other silks. 📍I used one of my 1970s vintage patterns to hack the Donny shirt. I’m quite pleased with it. ✂️I think the Anthea will lose its collar but I will salvage the trim. New skills: I rethreaded my combo machine to try the rolled hem. You can’t see the result as it’s on my UFO. It makes hemming silk a breeze. Day 10 and wearing a new make Vogue 9006 in a knit fabric. Another experiment using knit fabrics for patterns for wovens. The only variation was the cuff. It didn’t need to be buttoned. It is a wearable toile and I only need to take 2cm off each shoulder and maybe shorten the sleeves when I make it again. There is so much more choice when it comes to woven patterns so you can create something quite unique in a knit that you could never find new. #memademay2019 Day 7 Sometimes life gets busy and you forget to post a daily photo challenge because you have a house full of people....oops.  I love easy separates that you can dress up or down.  This fabric is leftover from someone's prom dress last year, and probably from the Casa collection at Joann-s. I only had enough for the front, so the back is a black jersey knit. In addition to the shirt (it's view A, and like the directions said, not cut on the bias) I also made my skeleton-pirate themed shower curtain. The fabric is by Alexander Henry and it's called "Skelewags". If you're ever trying to give a very bland bathroom some flair, make a fun shower curtain. Not all "memades" need to be clothes! I've been on a bit of a refashioning kick recently.  Only the items I have made (or reworked) this year actually fit me so I decided it was about time I refashioned or altered what I have.  It won't stop me making new things, though 😉. . . This skirt was originally a dress ➡️ (McCalls #m2401 in my recent post for #bpsewvember2020 about tracing off patterns) made from a beautiful linen with what I call a 'paint splodges' pattern.  (I made the basic dress and self drafted the flounces way before IG and forgot to photograph it before I set to with the ripper.  Sorry for the rubbish photo but this is the only one I have. ) . . I totally unpicked it one night while watching TV, and used as much of the original as I could, including the lining. It was a straightforward make since there was plenty of fabric in the original dress to cut a skirt.  I did have to cut the front pocket bags from the sleeves 😂 and on the crosswise grain but it works! I used a shortened version of the straight skirt pattern that I've made several times this summer and attached the tweaked flounce to that. . . The cowl neck top is Vogue #V9006 and the only thing in the wardrobe that now coordinates with the skirt! . .
