🐝 Sewing Bee Week 3 🐝 What a fabulous episode last night was. We were transported to West Africa this week and got to see and hear all about the local culture of clothing and fabric 💕 and as ever, some beautiful garments were made. It is a little harder this week for our pattern picks, but we have managed to find a selection that are a take of the Boubou (a wide sleeved floaty robe) which is what the Bees were challenged with for their made to measure. The weather is hot hot hot and after watching the Sewing bee this week and learning about the Boubou I thought I get out my Kaftan I made last year in November and because of that i haven’t really worn it but now its come into its own now we currently having a heatwave here doen South in the UK as its so cool and Summery to wear which is exactly why the Boubou is so popular in west Africa. I made it in this beautiful ‘inky Grove’ Minerva exclusive viscose challis which is so perfect for it as its cool to wear and drapes beautifully. The pattern is Simplicity 8505 and it's a reissued 1970s pattern and I went for view B. I originally used ribbons to tie underneath as per the pattern instructions but i found they kept slipping lose so I decided to replace them and use bra extenders like the charm waterfall dress which works much better. @simplicitymccallsaustralia #s8505 with some lovely tana lawn fabric from @wearethefabricstore (I think it might be Liberty). This pattern did need some adjustments to make it fit but I think it would be a great to throw on over swimwear or just for general flouncing around on the beach 🏖️ I had to add a 10cm section in across the shoulders otherwise I couldn’t do the tie up underneath my bra so be careful if you are not chestically challenged 😂 I took some length off also as #sewingshort 🥸 Overall I like it, it would be great on a hot day. My second time with this pattern, which I actually completed back in May but am wearing for the first time in 89 degree Santa Fe heat. Over half my suitcase was #memade on this trip and it’s so fun to see how far I’ve come with this grad school distraction hobby. Only mod is the fact I kept the OG length and didn’t add the extension for the usual floor length look. took me weeks to find the will to hand sew the interior belt on this, but procrastination aside this pattern could theoretically come together in a dedicated day or leisurely weekend. A glamorous bedsheet, a breezy nothing outfit for maximum lazing. Used the leftover fabric from my #s8505 vintage caftan to make the #ogdencami from @truebias. I made a size 12 and added 2 inches to the length of the lining to better fit my bust. I finished the dang caftan! This is such a long story, so let’s call this part 1. . I ordered two silk jersey panels from @corefabrics from the listing said sold my panel, that choosing 1 yard would mean 1 panel. My though is as that at roughly 42 inches long I’d make short caftan/zero waste sort of dress. When my panels came however they seemed to be cut by the yard, with one complete piece and the remaining not a full panel (it a printing error to boot, missing the pattern for several inches). . Core fabrics was able to solve this despite being sold out b/c another person had the same problem and opted to return their fabric! So I ended up with two full panels plus 1/2-2/3 of another two. So, how to make that work? You can see some ideas in the 2nd slide. I opted to put the red at the top, and add a seam across my calf area to make it full length. . #sewover50 #stillsewingstories #s8505

Iconic 1970’s #kaftan #s8505 pattern from @simplicity_creative_group made with @moodfabrics sea foam metallic cotton voile. The bodice was a puzzle but once it clicked in my peanut brain it was quite fun to assemble. I didn’t use the extension piece for length as I wanted it cocktail length (plus I’m short!). Entering my loungewear phase! I sewed vintage @simplicity_creative_group 5315 (rereleased as 8505) with this fun, bold print from @moodfabrics. It’s a great beginner pattern made mostly from giant rectangles. I still tinkered a little with the fit— after all that’s one of the rewards of sewing. My peacock  kaftan is finished and I love it, the fabric was a perfect choice for this 1970s kaftan. The pattern is  simplicity 8505 which I made twice before and this pattern never fails me and is so perfect for this challis as it shows off the beautiful drape and pattern of the fabric. I am so glad I decided to add the contrast lilac fabric for the small midriff panel in the front as I feel it picks out the lilac in the pattern, there are lots of colours in this you could pick out as a contrast from deep purple to lilac , royal blue to turquoise and also greeny/yellow hues, it just so happened that I had some Lilac dupion which worked well as its a bit firmer and more stable  than the challis. These new designs in the @minervadotcom exclusive range are exquisite, I haven't had one disappoint me yet and this is such a lovely quality challis, so soft and comfortable to wear it's one of my favourite fabrics. Only downside is its hard to choose one as they are all so beautiful so maybe just work your way through them all! The minute I saw this fabric I thought of this pattern as I thought it would show the fabric off to its full potential with its simple lines and drape. In my opinion a beautiful detailed  patterned fabric  should have simple lines to show fabric to its full potential. I bought these panels with the intention of making a caftan; each is about 44” long and would end up below my knee, so a short caftan I guess! But I find myself with two additional partial panels and can now extend the length. The question is which way—if I place the border in the middle below my waist (the black outline, but lower than I’ve drawn, I can match front and back in one long piece. OR I can put the border at the top (the purple) and add a panel at the bottom that kind of blends in. Note that this is a silk jersey knit, and maybe a long dress is too heavy for the fabric? @djliquid86 and I matched for most of @tikikon which was so much fun! He picked out the purple fabric and what styles I would make us. I picked out the fabulous mint rayon, and both are from @hawaiifabricmart ♡♡♡ First time making the waterfall dress, and I do think I need some adjustments. Armhole was far too high for me, and I missed the instructions about flatlining the neck - it will need to be taken apart and redone now that I have some time. Overall, very satisfied with the pattern. Whew! Winter sure has a way of sticking around this year! 🥶 It’s already May and it’s still too chilly to start wearing all my warm weather sews.
