Continuing the process: The non-glamorous parts of sewing that take time and are important but lack the wow or satisfaction factor (for me anyways). Washing the fabric (because it will be worn and need to be washed), ironing, marking the right sides of the fabric (saves much time when cutting and piecing if both sides of the fabric are similar), laying out pattern pieces, and cutting and marking. Also leaving the pattern pieces out with the pattern on top allows for easy identification and ability to see any markings I may have forgotten to transfer. (It happens 🤦‍♀️). • Camping chic • . . I had a remnant from the maxi shirtdress I made, just large enough for a pair of shorts for my daughter. The pattern is just a basic pj bottom patten with short legs. I wanted to make a fun little detail, so I quilted some fabric to use as pockets. After sewing them on, I had doubts - did the quilted pockets look like a cool designfeature on a pair of basic shorts or did they look like potholders? I am not neglecting the very practical issue of always carrying a pair of potholders. You might come across a hot pot in a fire that needs removing during your day - that might demand you take of the shorts though - but did it look cool? My only judge is my daughter, who will wear them, and she decided on cool. So here you go daughter - shorts with potholders. What am I working on today? A new pair of pajamas using material from my stash. My favorite pjs are a shorts and short-sleeved version Simplicity 8803 (just shortened the pattern). You can see them on my grid. So I decided to make more. I am using some teal cotton/linen blend for the main fabric and the dark floral for the bias piping. (I do not have enough floral for the main parts). Trying to sew a bit each day. Today was making the bias piping. This did involve a trip to the store as I was out of 5/32” cording. In case you ever want to sew children's pyjamas - I made up three different patterns in December and thought I would give you a quick review! The first is Mccall's 2949 and it was my favourite. It has a neck facing instead of collar, dropped sleeves, and buttons or poppers. It was the easiest pattern of the three; I sewed it in a super-soft cotton flannel from @bstfabrics, and my 8-yr-old loves them. Pic 2 is a pair of pink pyjamas in the Simplicity mother and daughter pattern #s8803, a classic pj pattern with collar, cuffs and buttons. The cuffs on legs and arms meant that I could conceal the back of some sparkly sequin embroidery! This pattern seems to run a bit small but is a good classic style and the envelope also contains separate adult pieces for me! Pic 3 is the Lazy Days pattern by @blankslatepatterns and is well drafted with a decent collar and (I think) true-to-form sizing. (it's the only one with the right length in arms and legs!) • January hibernation make #2 • . . One pj is clearly not enough, when the january blues kick in. Sewing another pj was my therapy. I sewed a similar one in the blue colourway last spring for my girl, so when I spotted this blush colourway in the same delightful cotton jaquard shirting I couldn’t help myself. Look at those woven in moon and stars! Now we are matchy matchy all night long😄. The fabric is from @fabworksmillshop - a favorite place to shop for shirting and suitings. I used Simplicity 8803 again, but this time I narrowed the sleeves and legs slightly. I like the fit better this way. Sewing Diary #s8803! Comfiest of comfy new pajama bottoms! Thank you Erin @pacificfabrics for your pajama bottoms sewing course. I thoroughly enjoyed your class; what a great Saturday well spent with @kistleclark! Thank you Erin for kindly pointing out my very silly fold over elastic I brought was the very wrong type of elastic. To waste not, when I got home I unpicked and pulled the elastic out and added braided elastic over the fold over and reinserted the new and very much improved waist band. Modifications made: POCKETS (#ithaspockets), a draw string, and piping around the cuff. The waist was a size L but thankfully I have a draw sting so that shouldn't matter too much but ended up grading the legs down to a size small cause they were too baggy for my taste. since I had pulled the whole waistband off, I thought it'd be lovely to thread the magical serger with matching thread and make the seams pretty. worth it! The fabric is from @wyldwoodcreative and it's called Mammoth Organic – Cotton Flannel – Buffalo Plaid – Mushroom. It is such a high quality fabric and keeps me so warm. Of course no garment goes without a garment tag, Thank you @blackbirdfabrics for the finishing touch of a pincushion garment tag. Already living in these pjs and pleased with myself for trying piping for the very first time. It's such a fun little detail. Going to tackle the pajama top next. Well, the activities of November and December brought my posting to a halt. Thankfully, I was able to get some sewing finished. Here are the finished piped linen pjs with fabric covered buttons. I intended to do a monogrammed pocket. But I omitted after deciding the purple in the piping fabric did not match the embroidery thread well-enough. #s8803 pajama pants in a size medium, straightened the leg from the hip notch down. I made the matching top in #helensclosetreynolds . I made my own bias tape instead of facing for the top edge for a cleaner finish. I received this gorgeous fabric as a gift from Natalie @goosefeathers1 . It came from #illuminationfinefabric , 100% cotton, imported from France made by #sajoufrance . The print was inspired by the queen’s bedchamber at Versailles. It’s a bit heavier than the poplin I was expecting and a little lighter than a canvas. I’m thrilled with how they turned out as a set of ultimate luxury lounge wear. I’ve never been a fan of traditional women’s pajama button down shirts and the reynolds top ended up being the perfect match for incorporating the border print of this fabric. I was having issues with the facing. It just wasn't working. I was starting to get discouraged. So, I switched patterns. Lol This is a combination of 2 shirt patterns. Once I'm done all share all the deets. I was just too excited to finally be so close to the finish line. Here is my new grown up pyjamas made in @maygibbsofficial ‘s gumnut babies cotton flannelette! Ahhh as someone who just wears T-shirts and undies to bed, I feel so sophisticated going to bed in this! Pyjamas is the one garment I would venture out of my plain-commit-palette. How cute are these gumnut babies?! By the way, these photos were taken right after a night of sleeping in them. I didn’t press them or anything. The fabric just stayed looking this way! It was simply a dream to work with. I used the @simplicity_creative_group 8803 pattern for this set. • Christmas present • . . I forced my oldest daughter to pose for pictures of my christmas gift to her - a much needed new pyjamas. She looks like she is longing to be anywhere but here - and she probably does - but I wanted to show you the pj in all it’s wrinkled glory - she has already slept in it twice. I love making pyjamas - all the details of a good shirt and THEN I get to make pants too! The making proces feels like a christmas gift in itself. Swipe for details. The fabric is a lovely cotton poplin from @stofdepotet and the pattern is yet again Simplicity 8803. I have it several times. Just be careful with the sizing. For my tall daughter I make sure to do the scandinavian adjustment - adding 10cm to the leg length and 6 cm to bothe the body and sleeve length. Otherwise no adjustments. She likes her pj to be a bit on the roomy side and this sure is. I have been working non-stop so long that I decided to have not one but 2 winter holidays in skiing resorts plus a family weekend getaway to enjoy some snow activities. For my upcoming trips, I wanted to make warm pjs that would feel like a hug and look nice enough to wear where there's other people too.
