#s8753 for my husband. He asked for short sleeve linen shirts for summer. He’s tall and thin and very often a tall shirt it much too floppy (b/c they are typically big & tall), and obviously regular is too short. I made a toile and some small adjustments to length and collar size, changed the placket, and made sure this pocket could hold his glasses (I think it’s still a little snug on his neck but these are not intended to button to the top). (Still playing catch up!) B wanted to have more boxy fit shirts, so I figured I could make a few mods on his usual shirt pattern. 👕 I usually use a Big 4 pattern (#S8753) for his shirts since we more or less have the fit down. To make it boxier, I added 2” total to the armscye, slashed and spread the sleeve to add 1.5” at the hem (short sleeve), and added 2” to the sleeve length from the original sleeve length. I also cut the back bodice piece with an extra 2” in width at the center to add a back box pleat for even more volume! Last mod was to straighten out the bodice sides and hem. We were happy with how it turned out! A change from the norm…. The first thing I have ever made for my husband. Who in their right mind would chose to make the most complicated, most precise thing ever, while recovering from major surgery? Nobody sensible, is the answer. And that non-sensible person is me. So this shirt took me about 5 weeks, in 10 minute bursts, and was a labour of love. But it is probably the most well made thing I have ever made. What you can’t see in the photo is that every seam is flat felled. Every single one. And, should it be required, we can put collar stays in. (It will never be required. What a waste of time.) But also, what you may be able to guess is that my husband is very tall, and also very slim, and struggles to find shirts that fit his arms and his length but do not swamp his body. And I think I have succeeded in making a shirt that actually fits him!! I am very proud of this. It’s this guy’s birthday!❣️ FINALLY documenting this work shirt he’s been wearing on repeat, which is one of the more intentional garments I’ve made. B’s been into the Ben Davis 1/2 zip work shirts after seeing a popular Tiktok chef wear them all the time. Then @leila.makes posted a Paola jacket hack of one, and it was destiny 👌🏼 I ended up using a men’s button down shirt pattern (#S8753) that I’ve made many times for B, and we know it fits. I used the same hack steps as in Leila’s tutorial (which is gold!!) - cut front on fold, eliminate any extra width from the button placket - but I did forget that having a facing piece to hack would prevent the zipper in the front from being exposed and itchy. So I ended up cutting some strips of selvedge (cuz it’s real nice stuff; also used it for the hang loop) and hand sewing it to all edges of the zipper afterwards. I also botched the measurements for the zipper I used and had to mend the corners I snipped too far into, but who can tell anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also this fabric!!! It’s deadstock Theory (!), some sort of cross between a cotton twill and a shirting with great weight and just a hint of stretch, that I got from Mood. I had been searching for just the right stripe, and this was it. (I don’t like this collar—I was extra careful with markings/notches but the collar is a midge too long for the stand in that if you wanted to button the top button the collar would overlap rather than just touch. Thanks Rob for kindly gifting me this beautiful beautiful fabric. It was a great success at the Frocktails catwalk! Buttons are from @parisinaoficialmx Monterrey city centre branch. Pattern is Simplicity’s S8753, View C (slim fit). First time I’ve done this pattern in satin and I have to say it was a challenge! However, if you sew slowly you’ll be OK. Also, I noticed pinning and basting tended to damage this delicate fabric, so I kept fabric perforation to a minimum (used lots of clips). Another year, another set of matching Easter outfits. Son: #s8180 by @simplicity_creative_group, size L. Regularly size 8. I had to adjust the button placket a little to account for the collar spacing. No other mods. Daughter: #llkquincy by @littlelizardking, size 10. Regularly size 10/12. This fits well, though a size 12 would’ve been fine. Bottom tier is lengthened a few inches to her preferred length. Husband: #s8753 by @simplicity_creative_group, size 40, view C. Sleeve seam taken up 1.25” at shoulder seam, graded to nothing at pit. Removed excess fabric at sleeve from front and back bodice pieces but should’ve only done it from the front. Sleeve shortened to his preference. Next time I will add width to the sleeve cap so I can do an ease gather to help point the sleeve down. Will share details of my #validress on the next post. //Fabric: I used 12 yards of this @robertkaufman cotton lawn for all four pieces. 9yds came from @madewithharmony, but my daughter’s dress used close to 5 yards, perhaps more. And I knew there would not be enough left over for the other three pieces. I panic searched the internet to find more since Harmony was now out of stock, and fortunately found more yardage at @fabric_and_frolic. Third year of matching Easter outfits. It gets harder each year as my kids have more opinions on what they will actually wear. //Fabric: @robertkaufman cotton lawn from @madewithharmony. Every year I get a little bit more to accommodate growing kids, so I got 8 yards this year. I only have a few scraps left (last picture). //Patterns: Husband: #s8753 by @simplicity_creative_group, size 38, view C. I used his body measurements and also measured a shirt with a fit he likes to confirm with the finished garment measurements. This is my first time with this pattern and I just went straight to the good fabric without making a toile. And, fortunately, the fit it pretty good. I brought up the shoulders 1/4”. I may grade up a size in the chest next time as there’s some pulling in the back. I also made it short sleeves to his preference. They flare out some, which isn’t great, but I’m not sure if that’s from the fabric or if I need to take in the sleeve width next time. Honestly, this shirt is in my top 3 things I’m most proud of making. The pattern has a fancy collar that includes collar stays. I appreciate all the views and the slim fit is great. Daughter: #m7799 by @mccallpatterncompany, size 10, view C. She picked out the pattern and view. She’s a size 10 in RTW clothes and this fits her well. Son: #s8180 #r11169 by Simplicity, size boy’s M. I’ve made this pattern for my son many times and it’s a great, basic button up pattern for him. No frills. There are no mods, though I could’ve shortened the sleeves. I figured he’d just grow into it better as the size smalls that I’ve made are snug on him now. Me: Mashup with #mwraida sleeves, #PoppyBowDress bodice, and #mwzamora skirt. #selflesssewapril23 was a hit! I successfully made my husband his first bespoke shirt by your truly! I have allowed myself to be so terrified of sewing men’s wear, and I had no reason to be! From there, my son got a matching shirt and baby girl got a matching dress, now if only I was able to get my garment made up in time for Eid, but alas we’ll be coordinated and fly for the next family outing!
