This vintage pattern features a trim sleeveless blouse with soft pleats at the front neck edge and a single button fastening at the neckband. The full skirt has soft pleats from side front to side back waistline, creating a rounded hipline effect. The short jacket includes a shawl collar cut in one with the front and three-quarter length push-up kimono sleeves.

Retro sewing pattern challenge 1949 skirt Vogue #V1863 and 1950’s silk blouse and bolero jacket project both Simplicity #S9699 These garments appear simple but there were some surprises in the construction techniques and a different way of sewing compared to the modern patterns. Definitely not a beginner level. The collar on the blouse was not straight forward and very fiddly but it is beautifully fitted in the bodice with all the darts and the waist shaping. I made this in silk dupion and plan to make it in a variety of colours. The skirt is made from a rayon/nylon/spandex mix and the drape was not quite right compared to the pattern photo but I placed some weights at the side seams and that fixed the problem for me. It has a lovely swing when I walk and the pockets sit very nicely. The bolero was a surprise for me. I only made it because I wanted to do the pattern justice and it turned out to be my favourite piece. Made from a heavy cotton weave, almost upholstery weight, it was definitely a challenge to make. The collar area is not for the novice sewer and was quite a difficult to sew two right angles at the neck area but, with a more delicate fabric, it would have been much easier. The whole outfit feels and moves beautifully and it makes me feel special when I wear it. Whelp! Finally (after months, because I think I started this before December) put the facing in this jacket. If I ever make this pattern again, I'm going to make the jacket one or two inches longer, and also ignore all the instructions regarding where to put the interfacing for my own sanity. Not entirely pleased with this (is it obvious?) but at least I'll have finished it. Jacket is #s9699. I made the blouse too, from the same fabric. There is glitter everywhere.

After buying this stunning cotton sateen from @spotlightstores I was then too scared to use it for fear of choosing the wrong project 😂 Inspiration struck after I had made a few vintage patterns and suddenly it all came together very quickly. Well, the top is done, so now I've moved on to the jacket. It's certainly more of a puzzle than I expected! I'm so used to doing steps in a certain order that it keeps tripping me up when these instructions want me to do something completely different. For the blouse that meant applying the collar "inside out" (the collar facing went on the outside). For the jacket, that means putting a dart in a piece of fusible interfacing before fusing it to the jacket front. This is definitely one that will trip you up if you aren't paying close enough attention! #s9699 #simplicitypatterns

As soon as I saw this upholstery Printed Canvas in Blk/Red, I fell in love with it. Lately I have been very inspired by the style of Lucille Ball’s 1950’s fashion and to achieve this, I mixed two vintage patterns to be worn as separates. I wanted to be able to mix and match this beautiful fabric with other pieces in my wardrobe so I could wear them again and again. I’m so happy with how they turned out. Huge congratulations to Brigid and Jess on a well executed backyard wedding over the weekend. It was a huge honour to be asked to make their wedding outfits and a bit of a labour of love to help two cool people achieve their vision. Jess’s skirt was the #simplicitypatterns #s9699 skirt. Brigid’s suit was the #fibremood #kaiblazer and #billietrousers and I welted some pockets in to make for a more formal look. I modified a long sleeve shirt pattern from a Japanese pattern book for Brigid’s shirt. @drapersfabrics in Fitzroy for the amazing wool crepe and a bunch of trips across all the great fabric shops in Melbourne for advice and incidentals. Big shout out to Kim from @theclothshopivanhoe for guidance and support. It was out the back of her shop were all this sewing started 5 or so years ago.

Casually latergramming my work trip to Italy. This is simplicity #s9699 (blouse) and the skirt is Simplicity #s9882. I swear to you that these are two different patterns 😅. Both fabrics came from my latest local fabric store, @theconfidentstitch. I should have done a small FBA on the blouse, but live and learn.

Went to the fabric shop to purchase a pattern and left with three patterns and the fabric to make one of them. The fabric is cotton sateen and is intended for Simplicity S9699. The skirt and jacket will be made in the light blue, while the top will be made in the lilac/light blue floral. After that is off to the op-shop to find a belt to recover to match the outfit. Managed to squeeze in some sewing today! Made a blouse for Viva using a beautiful fabric scrap I got from @crashtheparty_ and Simplicity #s9699 which is a nice pattern if you want to get frustrated. Well, that’s not entirely true. It does come together pretty quickly, (unless you are like me and underline everything) and the shape is quite lovely. However, I found the sizing to be off and the collar was so annoying that I gave up and used every scrap to make some bias binding for a tie instead, which I think works just fine for a bit of panic sewing! Hoping to make a skirt to go with it -just to stress myself out even a bit more, a week before leaving. Excited to see everyone!
