I bought this double faced coating from @drapersfabrics on my first visit there after they opened in Fitzroy. It took me a while to decided on a pattern and possibly just as long to decide which side to use. I've been in California for the month of October and even though it's been in the 90s for most of my stay (🥵), I was hard at work on some winter coats! I made two simultaneously which was absolutely the worst idea I've ever had ☠️ but I survived! This one is actually a gift I made for my mum. She had her heart set on a 50s style swing coat so she ended up picking this vintage Simplicity pattern. She also picked the fabrics but I will take credit for lobbying really hard for the lining flannel - which she ended up choosing and thank goodness because it's incredible! I don't tend to love vintage patterns given how tedious some of the techniques can be (and there were definitely some steps along the way that could have benefited from extra explanation), but I do love how it turned out. Happy New Year! I've never done a make nine post but with it now being 2021 I thought I'd give it ago. Let's see if I stick to these plans! I've picked 6 projects I want to get done this year, the projects either have a challenge or new technique or they fill a gap in my wardrobe. And then I've picked 3 fabrics from my stash that need to get made up this year! 1. #elodiewrapdress from @closetcorepatterns I have never made a wrap style dress before and I am so in love with everyone else's versions of this pattern. I am thinking of getting this made up soon so I can wear it for my birthday. 2. #fioreskirt another closet core pattern, I I'm into this button up version and I definitely need more skirts in my wardrobe. 3. #s8509 coat, I have this coat cut out ready to go but I'm scared to start because.... Its a coat? I have no reason I just need to do it. 4. #s8462 aka #circleskirts I need some plain skirts, maybe a navy and black, to wear with. My baby girl was happy to be Ursula but it had to be “pretty” I made a circle skirt dress with netting, added sheer sleeves and top, and the tentacles I attached to a matching belt. They are stuffed and have wire in them to give them more shape. The necklace and earrings are made from real seashells that I had in my craft stash. This was a fun costume to make! Simplicity 8509 is such a good pattern. It’s relatively simple to sew because it has few of the fiddly details that can be difficult to pull off in thick or textured coating. When I made this coat the first time I was disappointed that it had no pockets. This time I considered using the pockets shown on the short jacket option but thought the 3D spots might make the seams messy. In the end I sewed the welt pieces to the back pocket bag pieces to avoid the light yellow lining fabric showing and set them into the side seams. I also added a Norwegian clasp rather than struggling to make buttonholes. These are decorative metal and you simply sew both sides onto the surface of the garment. The Minerva textured spot boiled wool coating fabric is a knit and like most knits can stretch or sag a bit if you don’t use stabilising techniques. This pattern uses interfacing on the front facings and Petersham tape inside the front edge seams so they won’t drop. The back of the coat did drop a bit and I had to use a deeper hem (or trim) there. I notice that other makers often use soft cardigan style coat patterns with this fabric and I think a very tailored style might be difficult but Simplicity 8509 is a great way to achieve a more vintage less casual style without tricky details. #minervabrandambassador #minervamakes #minervamakers #s8509 #vintagecoat #vintagecoatpattern #1950scoat #sewover50
