I couldn’t wait to share all of the details about sewing my own wedding dress! I used a mashup of @mccallpatterncompany #m7718 and @cashmerette’s #UptonDress in @blackbirdfabrics Fairytale Vines Guipire lace (no longer listed on their website) and Sculpted Stretch Poly Double Crepe, both in eggshell. Three things I’ve learned sewing such a huge (physically and for such a big event) project: it’s always going to take longer than you think and I recommend buying way more fabric than you need. If you’ve been following along in my stories (hi, I love you all for your support along the way), you may remember I had a bit of a mishap with the hem, with about 5 days prior to the wedding. I ended up having enough fabric to recut some of back of the skirt, but I needed to add a small wedge of fabric to one of the back side panels that was mostly covered by the lace anyways. The third lesson is that the crowd will go WILD when they realize you have pockets on your wedding dress. 😍 I added pockets large enough to hold a small notebook for my vows, in addition to lipstick, some tissues and eventually my phone. 30.07.22 ❤️ WEDDING DRESS PART 5: Not much more to say other than that I love it! I loved the process and I love the result, would happily make it all over again (or one of the million other complicated gowns that I have no purpose for that I'm dreaming of). The only thing that I wished I'd fixed before the day was it would have been nice to have built in bra cups to keep everything where it's supposed to be. It's hiding in the photos here, but Nate's shirt is a Sophie make as well, in a lovely linen/cotton from Miss Maude. After months of handsewing and battling steel boning this was a lovely refreshing project. •The Dress, Part II: The Muslin• Once I had the corselet figured out, the rest of the muslin went pretty quickly. The bodice of McCalls 7718 (which is also the pattern I used for the skirt) matched up perfectly with the top of my corselet; I just took in the seams a little under the bust to make it more fitted. For the bodice overlay, I adjusted the princess seams of the Elisalex dress bodice to match the McCall’s bodice seams and deepened the v front and back. Mercifully, I had no issues with gaping at this step! •The Dress, Part IV: The Bodice• Despite all my muslins, I ran into trouble with my first corselet. The muslin I had used was too flimsy, and I had trimmed the overbust boning a smidge too short, and the combination caused the main bodice to pull the corselet away from my chest. After posting a cry for help in my stories and receiving feedback from several of you (thank you!), I tried again with cotton coutil for the outer layer and longer boning: problem solved. I made my waist stay from blue petersham ribbon for my “something blue.” Next it was time for the bodice overlay. I created the base from silk organza and tulle, enclosing the seams between the layers. Then I cut out a few dozen beaded lace motifs and pinned them to the base. The appliqué process was, like the skirt, simple but time consuming! Thought I’d make an isolated dress post, though I clearly got sidetracked and didn’t take as many process posts! But for the sewing community, the pattern this was based on is the #m7718 in view C. This was the strapless bodice and skirt. It was pretty straightforward, despite all the boning in the bodice. I chopped a whack off the length to make it the perfect length for dancing, as I knew a floor length gown just wasn’t for me. The textured overlay with butterfly sleeves I completely self drafted, which took a few prototypes first. Fabrics were from Goldhawk Road and @minervadotcom For anyone that can sew and is debating making their dress, DO IT. Take the plunge. I’ve never made anything quite this complicated before but i took my time and it ended up just like how I imagined in my first sketch! The good photos by @ochiweddings 🌟

True confessions: despite my many muslins, hooking me into the corselet of the finished dress was an adventure. Either I simply made it too tight in my efforts to ensure it was snug enough, or I gained back/core muscles in my hand balancing and aerial silks training between the final muslin and the wedding day. We made it work, it just involved a lot of shallow breathing (me) and funny faces (my mom)! •The Dress, Part III: The Skirt• The skirt was not particularly difficult, but it did take a while, not to mention over 45 yards of fabric! In all, it has 5 layers: an inner layer of muslin (added when my friend held it up to the light and realized it was see-through!), a layer of silk crepe de chine, a layer of tulle, beaded lace, and another layer of tulle over top. Between cutting and assembling the giant skirt pieces, removing beads from the lace seams, slip-stitching the lace seam allowances, and hemming the cotton and silk, I went through at least a couple of audiobooks, phone calls with my best friend, and episodes of Grantchester. I enjoyed learning how to do crochet chains to keep the layers in place. And I’m still finding those beads everywhere. Don’t judge my hems, please. •The Dress, Part VI: The Bustle• Figuring out the bustle was the final step. By this point I was tired of researching wedding dresses and very tempted to just bring it to a professional and be told what to do, but I pushed through and figured it out thanks to the internet! The Bridal Sewing Techniques (@bridalsewing) YouTube channel was extremely helpful for this step. I ended up with a 3-point under-bustle for the two bottom layers and a single-point over-bustle for the tulle.
