I fell in love with the fabric first. It feels like a fairly simple pattern and I wanted to practice the technique for the sleeves I once used for the dress B5317 by Butterick I sew when I was a teenager. I added darts in the back and the busy motif of the fabric made them quite concealed. I also took of half an inch in the seam of the middle back. I should probably have sized down to 14. (FR) Je magasinais pour des vêtements pour le boulot et, n’ayant rien trouvé, j’ai fini dans le magasin de tissus. C’est comme ça, qu’il y a deux ans, je me suis remise à la couture après 7 ans sans toucher du fil ou une aiguille. Je suis tombée sur ce tissu et je suis repartie avec. Le patron est relativement simple et j’ai voulu pratiqué une technique sur les manches que j’avais apprise en faisant la robe B5317 de Butterick quand j’étais ado. J’ai ajouté des pinces dans le dos et, grâce au motif assez petit et dense, elles sont assez bien dissimulées. J’ai aussi enlevé environ 2,5 cm à la couture du centre du dos. There’s nothing like a sewing challenge deadline to motivate me! Thank you Sarah, @2ducks_swimming for coming up with this month’s #magamsewalong theme of #shirtyseptember . I made this shirt to go with my new jumper. I really liked the yellow version of McCalls #m8161 I made back in August, so I altered the sleeves and made it again. I added 9.5 inches to the pattern's sleeve length & added an extra inch all around the lower sleeve flounce. The fabric is really lightweight, but not slippery at all. It behaved extremely well and held a press nicely, which made french seams and narrow hems much easier to accomplish. 99% of the time I just use the regular garment fabric for the facings. (What do You use?🤔) But because of the sheerness of this fabric and the bold, dark pattern design, I was worried it would show through and I didn’t want that to distract around the neckline. So I grabbed a very lightweight, neutral fabric from my stash to use. I think it worked very well. Swipe to see what it looks like. The shirt fabric is from @ginnysfinefabrics . Me Made May: Day 12 I’ve had this dreamy fabric by @brookgossen washed and ready to cut for months. I snagged it as a 1m remnant piece in a #neridahansenfabrics sale but it quickly became one of those “too pretty to cut into” fabrics. I picked up this #s8602 @simplicity_creative_group pattern which turned out to be absurdly similar to a @mccallpatterncompany pattern I own. I cut a 14, same as I had with the #m8161 except there’s more ease with #simplicity patterns so instead of being too snug as the M8161 top now is, this one has the perfect amount of ease. Though I did cut the D cup bodice piece rather than the C as my measurements put me in to just give me a touch more room. The tencel linen fabric was astonishingly lovely to work with. Slightly slippery but with the most beautiful drape and enough stability to still make sewing a pleasure. I’m thrilled with how it turned out. My only gripe is I made *just* as we’ve toppled into Winter and it’s not going to get as much wear as it deserves until the weather warms up. Its #FashionOnTheSofaFriday ! I just finished this top - McCalls #M8161 - and I think I love it. My only little issue: Sometimes I just ‘estimate’ markings… or stick in pins where dots are. But this time I very carefully and accurately marked all the dots and lines and arrows for the lower sleeve pleats on the wrong side of the fabric. 💪 I started making the top with no problem. Then I got to step 27, and the instructions said to fold the lower sleeve in half, wrong sides together and baste shut. 😳 wHAT?!?😱 All my beautiful markings were now trapped inside the lower sleeve and totally invisible to me! 😭So much for trying to do prep-work before reading all of the pattern instructions. 🤦‍♀️But I’ll know for the next time,…and I think there will be a next time. I also want to share this for #sewnshownseated . Because of the cropped length, it has limited bunching around the waist when seated & I like that. Finally got this photographed! #judithmccalls #m8161 I made this with a Japanese cotton/ linen blend sheeting by cosmo fabric from #illuminationfinefabric . I made the length of the bodice a little longer to avoid flashing mid-drift. The original sleeve length hit much lower on my arm causing the pleats wrinkle in an ugly way. So I removed about 3 inches from the intersection of the pleats and the sleeve to make it look more like the pattern picture. The sleeves restrict the movement of my arms reaching forward because they are quite fitted. I think it’s cute with the pleats on the sleeves 😁 Pants are #closetcorejenny ❤️

Another top using up some leftover fabric (I've already made a dress). Here's another version of McCall's #M8161 top, this time view A with the large tulip sleeves. I decided to line the inner sides of the sleeves aswell so you wouldn't see the 'wrong' side of the fabric under the arm and I think it makes the top looks much more luxurious and expensive done like this. I also added some length to the body so I could tuck it in. 🐝 Since my bee attracting trees are still deep in a post-prune hibernation 😭, I thought I’d wear my bee-utiful top outside as a (poor) substitute. Adore the pleated sleeves on this top! And that it works just as well with jeans and Birkenstocks as it does with a pleather skirt and heels for the oh-so infrequent trips to the office. There’s not a lot of ease in this top which is fine as it’s not designed to be loose-fitting, so when I make it again (and I will!), I’ll drop the seam allowance down a little since I’m using the largest size or perhaps break out my yet-to-be-used because I’m too scared to try it fashion multi tool from @sewtogrow… Pattern: @simplicitymccallsaustralia #M8161 View C. The evolution of a top. I bought this fabric online to make a #m8161 shirt that had balloon type cuffs on the sleeves, but it creased too easily and was not drapey enough for that to work. So it became a very square top inspired by the bodice of one of my all time favourite dresses, #b6722 (last photo). Only the lack of drape and candy stripes made it more like a tea lady’s tabard 😕☕️. A tie waist belt together with the high neck and crisp cotton just made it feel like an operating gown✂️. Not helped by the belt construction reminding me of an intussusception, and using an Aberdeen knot to close the gap where I turned it right side out. #closetcorekalle to the rescue, specifically the front placket piece. Some knife pleat ruffles, a lot of geometrical thinking to make sure all edges were finished, and ta-da! I think the alteration took longer than making the thing originally. But I’m pretty pleased with the results.

Puffy sleeves are my new obsession 😍 Recently I realised that my love of prints is kind of a hindrance when I’m actually putting on the clothes I make. I know maximalism is a thing but it is not the thing for me so I needed some plain items to mix and match with all the prints in my closet! However, plain doesn’t need to be boring. Me made may dag 20! McCall’s M8161 in een deadstock stofje. Those who follow me for sewing content, finally here is some content. Two work tops from pieces of random poly from Deep Stash. McCalls 8161. Added volume into the sleeve (who doesn't like a statement sleeve?). The second fabric was pretty awful to work with, slippery, frayed like no tomorrow, my overlocker didn't like it so that required French seams which I guess elevates the luxury finish. #m8161 #sewing #sewingworkclothes #homesewing

This may well be my most beautiful make to date. The most beautiful @ladymcelroyfabrics cotton lawn with a #m8161 bodice and @tillybuttons #sewingmathilde sleeves that I lengthened by about 5cm Getting the pattern placement to best show off those fabulous flamingos took a while. I needed to avoid cutting their heads off with the darts. I have obviously been avoiding thinking about getting back to work later this week by sewing. Next time I think I will lengthen the bodice by an inch or so and lower the bust darts by an inch, but I still love it. #sew50visible #sewover50 #mccallspatterns
