I made a dress in time to attend a beautiful wedding. I had been looking for a summery style with a flowy fabric. Searching online, I was inspired by a dress previously made by @sewmanju. She had used a combination of two patterns with a viscose challis fabric. The bodice sewing pattern is McCalls #m8040, and the skirt is McCalls #m7971. Looking through my fabric stash, I had a rayon crepe from @stylemakerfabrics with just enough yardage to make it work. I was so excited to get started. I sewed a seam and serged the edge. Somehow, the fabric folded under and I managed to to cut and serge through the middle of a fabric piece! Yikes! After taking a long break, I remembered the advice I had heard in my woodworking class. The difference between a beginner and someone more advanced is that they know how to fix their own mistakes. Okay, I was going to fix this and continue. I made a patch, and fused it with some 007 Bonash Bonding Agent powder. The gash is now barely visible and blends in with the print. Another challenge was installing the side seam pocket with a side invisible zipper. I didn’t have any directions to follow for this. However, there is a tutorial by Sew Elfie that was very helpful. I really like how the pocket turned out, and feel like this is a big accomplishment. For big sleeve energy, I added some nylon non-fusible interfacing from Mill Ends. The buttons came from an assortment from Pendleton Woolen Mill. Overall, I am very happy with this dress. It is one of those garments that fits well and is not fussy to wear. McCall’s 7971 in rayon crepe This is a belated birthday present for my elder sister. It’s way long coming because it almost killed my sewjo 😆 I made a toile before cutting it up, even tried it and refitted. Problem was, I underestimated how much it stretched out after cutting. Like I had to take 2 inches out of the skirt. Anyway, I did finish it eventually, even if it meant unpicking the zipper and sewing the back bodice by hand to reduce the gaping. Another shot of my @daria_patternmaking #rosecafebustier dress! If you’ve been following for awhile, you know I love this pattern. It’s my favorite bustier pattern out there. I’ve made it about 6 (?) times now—including for my DIY wedding dress! (Pinned to the top of my profile if you’re curious) One thing I always adjust though is the skirt. My measurements straddle straight sizes and mid-sizes, so I often change up skirts in patterns that are better suited to my pear shape. For Rose Cafe, I usually end up changing the skirt to a self-drafted half-circle skirt (SO easy to do- I have a loose tutorial on my YouTube channel), and lately I’ve really been enjoying the paneled skirt of @mccallpatterncompany #m7971 if I want more of an a-line fit (@sewbakemake turned me on to this pattern!) Another skirt I really love if I’m looking for more of a pencil fit (but not TOO form fitting) is #m8051. It’s a skirt with a darts in the waistline and it’s like a cross between a-line and pencil. Juuuuust skims the hips without being too bodycon. Do you have skirt patterns you return to again and again like I do? I’d LOVE to know what they are! — #patternhacking

I put a half lining in the skirt of this dress 💃why? Well it’s very light and sheer, also, it’ll help reduce strain on the dress seams when you sit down, also, I had just enough lining left over after lining the bodice. I cut it to finish just above the top of the slit, so you wouldn’t see it at all. I also liked how the lining finishes the waistline cleanly, otherwise it would just be serged. I added stay tape to the waist seam as well to keep it from stretching out. Almost done! #m7971 #blackbirdfabrics #sewing #2025sewing

I’m testing the bodice for a dress I want to make. This piece of yellow gingham from @wearethefabricstore allowed me to test the pattern in linen as I have bought some beautiful burnt orange linen from @de_linum, and it will make a nice summer top. I altered the neckline from boat neck to a square neck and after a few other little mods it should be ready to go as a dress pattern. I am using #mccallspatterns #m7971

McCall’s 7971 in rayon I had a lot of trouble fitting this one, as the main issues were all in the back. No one could help me pinch out the problematic areas, so I had to sew and try it on and adjust as I went 😞 Fabric: Rayon from @spotlightstores Pattern: #M7971 from @mccallpatterncompany Sizing and modifications: I modified the back pattern piece to open wider at the waist. Also added foam bra cups in the lining so I could go braless In the pic I am HB 33 FB 34 W 29 H 38 I cut in between 10-12 at the shoulders and bust, blending to 14 at the waist. I find my waist fluctuates between 28-30” so I made this in a size 14 based on 1” ease from finished measurements. (measurement chart put me in size 16- don’t do it) First was a standard SBA, which eliminated the side dart. Then the problem, as you can see, is that it still ended up a wee too big around the skirt waist band. I guess this style requires 0 ease at the waist to keep things cinched in. There was significant gaping along the lower edge too. I took out a generous 1 inch dart from each side, and still had some room. If you are going to attempt this pattern, get a buddy to help out 😅 it really got very tiresome after awhile trying to fix that gaping back. I still love wearing it though, the back ventilation and pockets are a major plus. I would size down the waist if I ever make it again, and maybe convert the back into an elasticated waistband to account for normal waist fluctuations throughout the day

My sewjo has ebbed and flowed over the past few months, but I find I kinda hate taking photos of my projects now?? I used to just grab some after doing a self tape but after 5 months of our writer’s strike and 3 of my union’s strike, those tapes are fewer and far between. But my hair looked extra curly and my skin extra clear this day so here is a little summer dress I made a month ago. This is a heeeeavily hacked #M7971 in a 10. Skirt is almost as is, but instead of the slit, I added 1.5” to each side of the center seam for a button placket. For the bodice, I loosely used the pattern top as a jumping off point and made princess seams. I…honestly don’t remember what I did to make this final look ha. I looove the final look but have some slight issues with the strap fit - I put the shoulder points too far out so the straps tend to slip off, especially with the very low back. I wanted a wide and low scooped back but it compromised some strap integrity to get there. I finished off the dress with a matching belt, and now I kinda want matching belts for everything! She is here! My take on @jaclynsalem ‘s amazing hack idea of combining the bodice of #s8635 and skirt of #m7971. It took multiple mock ups to get the fit right as I had no intention of wearing a bra with this dress. I accidentally used heavier than needed fusible interfacing but it worked out in the end as the stiffer result supports my bust in a bra like way. I removed the zipper and shirred the two back panels instead. Lesson learned that for the fit I like, I don’t need to cut the shirred pattern piece to 1.5/2x the original length. I can keep it the original size and that seems to still get over my head! I think next time I will try this bodice with a tired and gathered skirt for a serious swoosh effect. This beautiful fabric was a gift of @dianeattheranch 💕

Alteration-Refashion-Flip-Mending Month These pretty wedges didn’t have enough vertical space in the front section so I cut the straps to create room. There’s no rule against it, do what you want. Cut those shoes! I would have to say this is my favorite thing I’ve ever made. A little over 4 years ago I got to marry my best friend on a sunny spring day. I knew from the day I said yes that I wanted to make my wedding dress. I used a MaCall’s pattern #m7971 as my base and adjusted to have an open back and more volume.
