I’m thinking about the possibilities this dress offers, it’s a classic but can be done in a lot of ways! Perhaps an orange and black version for this month of octobre? I love this Succulent Citrus print which also features adorable cacti in colourful pots. I have particularly warm feelings towards cacti because they are the only type of plant that doesn’t die immediately it is entrusted to my care. Orange trees make me feel kind of warm too, kindling memories of Mediterranean summers and a holiday in Amalfi. The base fabric is a linen viscose mix and it is a little heavier than my normal cottons making it seem more appropriate to a long sleeved autumn dress. The fabric is a Minerva Exclusive and was very generously gifted to me as a Minerva Brand Ambassador. The fabric does fray a bit so I suggest overlocking the pieces as soon as they are cut. Last time I used this base cloth I did not pre wash and I think this was a good Idea as the fabric distorts a little when washed. The pattern Butterick 6702 I have more mixed feelings about. Usually I find the fabric quantities listed on big four patterns quite generous and don’t worry if my fabric is 137 cm wide rather than 150cm. For this pattern it matters. I had 4.1m of fabric and the pattern said 3.9m for the handkerchief hem option and 3.5m for the straight hem version. There was no way to fit the handkerchief option on my 4.1m of fabric and I struggled to fit the straight one on. The bust had about 2” of ease and the waist had 3”. I considered reducing the waist size and noticed that the envelope pictures showed it with a belt so decided to make it with the intended ease. I think it looks nice with a leather belt but would it would have looked even better with a self fabric belt if I had had spare fabric as I expected to. The bodice only has darts at the waist and not at the bust. Won’t do that again as I don’t think it makes such a nice shape. Also I prefer either a shirt collar with a stand or a double pointed jacket style collar on my shirt dresses. Made with six yards of Ankara fabric and a lightly modified #b6702, my favorite shirt dress pattern! My poor sewing machine had to go off for an emergency service/repair when I was in the middle of my latest project, this shirt dress, inspired by Kristen Scott-Thomas’s costume in S3 of Slow Horses. Fortunately, my Grandma’s Singer 401g from 1962 came to the rescue, complete with the buttonholer I’d bought online a couple of years ago. It makes amazing buttonholes, a lovely noise and is incredibly reliable. My dress had its first outing at a conference last week and I felt very smart. I bought this pattern intending to make a skirt (loving the handkerchief hem), but decided to give the dress version a try because it had multiple cup sizes. I still had to do a FBA on the D cup, but the bodice fits like a dream (especially in the bust and shoulders) because most of the work was already done for me. .. Oh yes oh yes oh yes it is AUTUMN 🍂 it is Windy it is BRISK and it is time for my large collection of pumpkin and mushroom jewellery to appear. This dress is a mashup of the bodice of #b6702 and the skirt of #s8014 a, with the bodice front extended on the bodice to be a self button band. The fabric is Ankara in feuille de papaye, or papaya leaves, but I think they look enough like generic Autumn Leaves to fool anyone in the uk! I added half an inch at the waist on each skirt side seam and then brought the hem out two and a half inches for a bit more circle, and made the pockets deeper. The fabric was very narrow so had to cut the skirt pieces with the fabric open and the back is seamed together rather than on the fold. I have made myself a half-timbered dress, so it seemed only right to photograph it with my Tey Pottery model of Lewes landmark Anne of Cleves House 😉 The pattern is Butterick 6702, which I have made up pretty much without alteration apart from shortening the sleeve so that I can wear a much loved black and white bangle with it. The stripe fabric is a Minerva poplin and the white collar , cuffs and buttons bands are made from a lovely textured shirting from Fabworks. The black and white buttons are an eBay bargain. The fabulous belt, which I have opted to have piped with dark red to break up the black and white stripes, was made by @harlequin.uk. QUEEN OF THE SQUIDS! It’s high tide so just very fast photos but I was so worried about the fit of this that I ordered three more metres of the fabric from @dittofabrics just in case it was a mess, but after a wash and a think about what it’s done (and a belt because I can’t find my poppers to do the bit at the waistline) I think it’s actually PERFECT and I can make something else equally squiddy and insane. This was @simplicitymccallsuk #b6702 with added side seam pockets (a bit low but liveable and I’m not unpicking that much overlocking) and fiddled front darts. I had to fudge the seam allowances about halfway through but overall I am SO HAPPY, especially with the buttons and the pattern placements. DE ⬇️ My favourite type of fabric is needlecord. It used to be flannel, but ever since I received this divine baby blue needle cord from @minervadotcom , I’m obsessed with it. It’s so delicate and fine, yet sturdy, easy to work with and 100% cotton. It can be elegant as well as sportive. Seriously, I can’t imagine a better fabric. I made Butterick pattern #b6702 by @simplicitymccallsuk @mccallpatterncompany and am very much in love with it too. It’s a classic shirt dress but with a twist. I love how the hemline picks up the shape of the collar. I didn’t change a thing about it and it fits perfectly! I used ring snaps by Prym instead of regular buttons. This dress is definitely a favourite! Feel free to swipe through all the pics. ❤️ DE Mein absoluter Lieblingsstoff ist Feincord. Bis vor kurzem war es noch Flanell, aber seit ich diesen wunderschönen hellblauen Feincord von @minervadotcom bekommen habe, ist es um mich geschehen. Er ist so zart und fein, gleichzeitig robust, einfach zu verarbeiten und aus 100% Baumwolle. Feincord kann elegant oder sportlich wirken. Ich kann mir ernsthaft nichts besseres vorstellen. Ich habe den Butterick Schnitt B6702 von @simplicitymccallsuk genäht und finde den genauso großartig wie den Stoff. Es ist ein klassisches Hemdblusenkleid mit einem besonderen Rock - ich liebe total, wie die Saumlinie die Kragenform aufgreift. Ich hab an dem Schnitt genau gar nichts verändert und er passt mir perfekt! Tentacular tentacular! A quick #theabohosleeveshirt without the mega sleeves in a glorious bit of @figofabrics Calm Waters jellyfish fabric from the remnants bin at @abakhan_liverpool. I used the sleeves from #b6702 and made the collar smaller. Buttons covered and attached now so finished and ready to wear! This is Butterick #b6702 made in a light weight chambray. This is a new pattern for me so I made a calico toile first and ended up shortening the bodice by about 2cm. The fit is so much better now so well worth the effort. This was the only belt I had that is anywhere near suitable but I think I’ll buy a different one when I’m out and about tomorrow. Think I’ll use this pattern again soon - it would be lovely in linen or a crisp cotton…..it will make a good basic work dress I think.
