The only modification I made for her dress was to make the tie on the side instead of the back. Athena! Goddess of wisdom, warfare and handicraft. I’m down with all three- well, maybe not war, but I do like that Athena wouldn’t take any crap from anyone. My daughter is reading the Percy Jackson series right now, so she is interested in all things Greek mythology. She asked for an Athena costume for Halloween. I used McCall’s 7589 for the dress with some modifications. The dress is super simple- and a perfect fit. I think I’ll make it again for her come summer. I cut a size L. The under layer is a rayon knit, fairly stable. The overlay is a slippery mesh. I cut the mesh wider and gathered at the top edge before sewing the two layers together. The two layers are attached at the neckline and then tacked under the arms. The gold trim is sewn to the mesh and wrapped around and tied at the back. The shield was a project in itself! We worked on it together. We built the armature with cardboard, rope and newspaper and then covered in paper mache (and painted gold). My husband made the spear. I ended up buying a gladiator helmet because i was out of time. The armbands were sewn from a stretchy gold spandex. I am now the proud owner of two more yards of the stuff 😆 Not sure what I’m going to make with it in the future! I was going to attempt some sort of helmet with it, which is why I bought extra. Anyway, it was a fun project and I love this stage where I am making things for my kids with their input.
