Thrifted fabric plus #s1456 equals this dress for my oldest daughter, which I entered in the @patternreview #pr2024pantonecoloroftheyear contest. I thrifted this fabric a year or two ago, and when #peachfuzz was announced as the @pantone #coloroftheyear, it was just the kick in the pants I needed to start using it. I believe it's a rayon/poly blend. Simplicity kids patterns are drafted for a pretty curvy shape. I graded out one size below the chest, including the length. My one complaint is that the sleeve cap has a lot of ease. I made flat pattern measurements to reduce it from approx. 1 3/4" to 1/2" and recut the sleeves. The instructions call for stitching in the ditch to sew the lining down, a method I don't prefer. I did it for speed plus I knew that area would be hidden. However, I think it took me longer because the lining slipped and left long gaps I had to fix. If I wasn't putting lace over that seam, I think I'd be pretty unhappy with how it looks. Since it was getting covered up, I was fine with leaving the stitching and just sewing another line to fix the gaps. I hand sewed the lace strip around the waist rather than machine sew. I took one tiny stitch through the lace about every 3/8", and the stitching is invisible. I made the lace flower myself, see my last post for details. I added snaps to the dress and the flower, so I can take it off whenever the dress goes in the wash. Leveling hems is always very tricky on children’s clothes. I usually get it most of the way there by measuring down from the waist seam, and then do the rest mostly through eyeballing. I try to measure up from the floor to double check, but that’s usually an exercise in futility. I think my zipper could be better, and I do think some of my pieces shifted a little in cutting after looking at it all put together. This was a fairly difficult fabric to work with, but it gave me some great experience, and I don't think it's super noticeable from a distance. I have a lot more of this fabric to use and might try something with fewer seams next time. However, I really do love the finished result, and I ADORE the color combo. @simplicity_creative_group

The blog post for my Peach Fuzz #s1456 is now up! Link in bio, plus a few more details and photos here. I sewed the darts using the single bobbin thread method, something I hadn't tried before. I am sold! It worked great. I really like this pattern. This is the second version of this dress I've made, and I find it to be just a great basic, great for modifying from if you want (there's been a number of patterns I've seen when browsing the Joann catalogs with my daughters where I've thought, "That's cute, but it's just this exact same bodice with an a-line skirt/with a gathered skirt/with pockets," etc.). I really like how the bodice darts and the fit-and-flare skirt make it look grown up while still being age appropriate. I picked up the larger size range (it comes in sizes 3-6 and 7-14, sold in separate packs) recently to have on hand as my children grow. Swipe to check out the back of the flower. I knew it would be delicate, so I attached snaps to the back of it and the dress, so I can remove it in the wash. I've seen this on RTW, and it works really well. The 3 dresses for the bigger girls are finished! #simplicitypatterns #s1456 for all of them, in sizes 2, 5 and 6. I put lapped zippers in 2 of them and an invisible zipper in the third. I really just love the anchor ribbon trim I put on all of the dresses; the bigger dresses needed the delicate Rick rack below the bodice to look right. A few weeks ago, my daughter came to me with a drawing of the dress she wanted me to make for her (swipe to see the drawing). I had trouble finding a sewing pattern that matched her drawing exactly so I chose one and modified it quite a bit. The sleeves were a bit of an afterthought and aren't exactly what she wanted, but she was satisfied. I think overall she liked the dress but if you know her, you know praise is hard to come by. 🤣😅 Pattern: Simplicity #S1456, heavily modified Fabric: very cheap, not worth mentioning

Keeping zipper placement consistent was a little more trouble than I expected. The hook and eye is the most solidly I’ve ever sewn them though! Bodice was done with bagging out- which I wouldn’t have known the term for it if not for the Great British Sewing Bee! I think there’s a small pull from the lining on one side and one bow looks less happy, but overall, I’m pretty happy.
