New dress! Made a bunch of changes to the written pattern, some I knew going in, some after trying to follow instructions and deciding I knew better 😂 Added buttonholes to the bodice to feed the waist ties through as well as two pockets on the skirt fronts so I can swap which side wraps to the front. Decided not to fuss with the quarter inch double fold bias tape around the pockets and also cut the bias strip narrower for the neckline facing. And added a band to the bottom of the sleeves because they hit a hella unflattering part of the ol' arm chub. ❤️lady in red❤️ Oh hey 👋 Nothing to see here except my new favorite dress and the plates we will not be using for Valentine’s Day anymore, all turned into my pop-art fantasy 🤗🥰 This is actually 🌟2🌟 dresses but who’s counting. Both are based on #s8186 (a pattern I can’t say enough good things about — and apparently can’t stop making). For the bottom dress (satin) I added length and side slits. For the top dress (tulle) I added lots of layers. I only used the simplicity pattern for the bodice and straps, then added 3 gathered tiers to the bottom. Many people today will be thinking of family memories as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. My Mum, now in her 101st year, was 15 on the night of 14 November 1940, when the beautiful and industrious city she lived in was more or less obliterated by the Luftwaffe. Germany coined a special word for the swift and brutal destruction they had carried out - "coventriert", or "Coventrated". Mum would often say that she preferred not to dwell on her memories of those times. But by 8 May 1945, she was 6-months-married, just pregnant and living with the in-laws. There was a street party outside their house in Duke Street, Nuneaton and I have heard her reminisce about the relief that VE Day brought. But her strongest, happiest memories seem to be of the coaching she received in frugal housewifery from her mother-in-law, Beattie - hearty meals consisting of a meat pie followed by a fruit pie, sitting on the yard on sunny days making a rag rug, Monday washdays, cutting down adult clothes to make children's clothes. This experience of carrying on and making do was universal for women of that era, and I have chosen to celebrate their work through my outfit for this evening's celebrations in my adopted home. I want as well to remember the resilience of my parents' generation and the courage with which they bore their scars as they rebuilt their world In true make do and mend fashion, my pinny is made from a pair of curtains I bought in a charity shop decades ago, supplemented with some viscose gingham from @minervadotcom . The dress was made some years ago in @libertyfabrics lantana, "Strike". Today we have a newer make, from another @annamariahorner fabric, this one is named Migration and the colorway is Night. One of the reasons I love AMH is the prints are really layered in depth and color. There are shadowy olive green butterflies among the pink guys, and there's a purple pinstripe as well. The pattern is Simplicity 8186, another Dottie Angel pattern (oop I think, but findable). I made the shorter wrap apron dress, and the wrap part is well engineered. I haven't had any issues that are often experienced with a wrap dress. I love the huge pocket in front, and the puffed cap sleeves.
