This fabric! I grabbed a very small amount of this @ladymcelroyfabrics cotton lawn a few years ago from @shopstitchcraft and have been waiting for the right pattern to come to me. I ended up going with #s9386 in view B- the simplest version, no flounces or ruffles, just a button up back. I like that there are bust and shoulder darts; the fit across the shoulders is great. I made size 10, which is one down from my suggested size (#b36w28h39) based on the finished measurements. I also shortened the top by 4 inches, and doubled the buttons on the back - the original pattern called for 5, and when I shortened it, it took out one of the original placements. The other 4 stayed, and I placed buttons between the original suggested marks. Oh- buttons are Atelier Brunette. Really lovely. 🌹Review of the Simplicity S9386 Top🌹 This top was a fairly straightforward make. I used left over cotton sateen from my stash. I used my bias binding on the sleeves (my fav way to finish off seams... I am a lazy sewer and making bias tape is super easy) The only part of this top that I hated was the interfacing... seriously some of the worst interfacing I have sewed. The pattern called for folded over hems in the ruffles, I opted to use my rolled hem on my serger instead. Just about finished with #simplicitypatterns #S9386. It is a vintage pattern (1960s). Before I even touched anything, I cut it in a size18 and did a 1" forward shoulder adjustment and 1" narrow shoulder adjustment. I then moved the darts down by 2 inches (I think). The shoulders fit great as does the rest of the blouse but holy smokes the arm ease around the underarms is tight. Very tight. As you can see on the dressform, I need to cut an inch off the front and back arm holes ( view D is sleeveless). Once I do that, it should fit great. Some other pattern thoughts: I questioned the extremely long bust darts but wanted to follow the vintage pattern. I guess because the fabric is so light weight, it works well. It looks fine. I like the perfect shaping the ling dart gives. It is a shame I did not get it made to go with my Frocktails outfit. Oh well.

The results of my latest dyeing project. I wanted something quick and low-effort so I decided to use the @ritdye washing machine method. I learned that if you pour liquid into an empty washer, it drains 🤦🏽‍♀️. Good thing I had only used half my dye bottle and was able to recover from my mistake! Other than that little mishap, everything went smoothly. I used the color marigold and dyed my white (with blue stripes) double gauze shirt (#S9386), a very pale green/almost white thrifted @luckybrand shirt, and 2 yards of a teal gauze fabric. My favorite result is the Lucky Brand shirt because the polyester thread in the embroidery resisted the dye which makes that embroidery so much more impactful now! I also love the greener color of the fabric yardage a lot more than the teal that it used to be! And while I’m happy enough with the double gauze shirt, I don’t know how I feel about the color that the stripes have taken on. I made this little top from a 1960s Simplicity pattern reproduction. I made size 14 and didn’t make any alterations to the fit. I could probably take an inch from the shoulder but I believe the pattern is intentionally wide in the shoulders (see model on pattern envelope) - must be a 60s look? Waffle lounge pants made from curtains and a petal collared button tank that were made from fabric remnants from an old neighbor. This will probably be my most worn #memademay but as a disclaimer neither of these pieces were made in May. I barely had enough fabric to make pockets for the pants, so I sewed a few scraps together. It was a happy accident that it made for some dimension on the bum. They are quite comfortable but very snaggy if you have a fur friend. The vintage #butterick4424 pattern is one I have used before and the pants portion of the pattern are quite a quick sew. I have been super hesitant to add buttonholes to any sewing project since they seemed so complex, but after a number of YouTube videos I think I figured it out! Apparently I put the button on the wrong end of the buttonhole foot. The #s9386 pattern is one I have tried to use before but the neckline is cut too high. I will have to make it scoop further down if I make it again. Also I'm not a huge fan of how the armholes are finished.

Day 9 of #memademay2024 is a London day. All of a sudden we seem to have skipped Spring and landed right in Summer and I’m loving it! Lots of meetings all over the place today then back to Barking for my fabulous colleague @monx662018 ‘s leaving do. I’m goth now 🦇 Not really but I have been into seasonal color analysis and think I’m a winter so I dyed my hair a cool, dark brown and have been trying to make clothes in my palette. This black and white high contrast fabric with a hint of silver was perfect. This was actually a wearable toile for this pattern and I love it even though I made further adjustments on the final garment. My favorite detail is the collar cut on the bias, showcasing the oversized gingham pattern. Gingham is goth right? Still shots and details for my #simplicity9386 vintage pattern. Love this petal collar and the fit of the bodice. Made a size 10 based on finished measurements and bust darts sit at just the right point. Shoulder darts in back work well with the high neck and the sleeve works well for me. I made another Simplicity 9386! This time it’s view B and I used a much softer fabric. I also widened the neckline and omitted interfacing. It’s overall a lot more comfortable to wear than the view D I made with a more structured fabric. I really like this pattern for a casual shirt and I think I’ll be making it a lot! I can make small changes - switching up button-band placement, sleeve length/volume, neckline shape, etc. I used cotton thread because I’m planning on dyeing this. But… I made use of the existing hem of the fabric (thrifted baby blanket) which is probably done with polyester thread 😅. So when I dye, I’ll have white thread on the shirt and sleeve hems, and matching thread along the neckline 🤷🏽‍♀️. Mods: 〰️ Neckline bigger by 0.5” all around (the radius is 0.5” larger) 〰️ Cropped length. The back is unintentionally longer but I like it! 〰️ No interfacing used anywhere. Another pair of #v1829 view A and a #s9386 top. Hacked the top using bias binding around neck and armholes instead of a facing, cutting the neck opening 1cm wider than the pattern. After having made a toile I left off the collar and lowered the bust darts by an inch too.
