Short Shirtdress made out of plaid two-sided double gauze. Very cool fabric from @stylemakerfabrics. People say that double gauze is warm in winter, cool in summer. I’ve made summer items and it did seem cool. Now, I’ll test if it’s warm in winter. I wanted a short Shirtdress. See inspo photos. I have a cardigan on the way to coordinate with this. Check out the reverse fabric which shows when I turn up the cuffs. See photo 2. Pattern is #newlook6449 . Truth be told, I made so many mistakes sewing this. 🫢I can live with most of them. I’ll make another post with all the boo-boos (so many of them - it takes a whole post…). On the good side, the plaid matching came out well. Details: Fabric: Fall plaid reversible check double gauze, chocolate/neutral, SKU 19735, $20/yd, cotton. The fabric was so easy to sew with. It has a lot of give so easy to work a collar into the neckline. I didn’t even put basting for the sleeves; I could just ease it in, like one does with knit fabrics. Pattern: New Look 6449, view D. Size 10 graded to 12 in the hips. I shortened the sleeves by 1”(as usual for me). I shortened the hem by many inches. For the hem, I made a facing rather than turning up the hem. I've put some make-up on today so you get a #MeMadeMay photo! I'm wearing a New Look 6449 shirt dress that I'm really happy with. It was supposed to be my Christmas Day dress but I only finished sewing it about a week ago. You can't really tell in this photo but the print is little hearts. Unfortunately New Look Patterns have #SewLimitedSizing and only go up to a 42" chest and a 44" hip. Which actually corresponds pretty closely to my current measurements and I made a size down from the recommended size. Sort of - I made two sizes down on top and 1 size down at the hips but I also added about an inch to the centre back within the pleat, just to add more space for my bum. I'll definitely make it again but I may need to make a small forward shoulder adjustment and raise the bust dart a smidge. I love a shirt dress, but I haven’t sewn a dress for ages. This make is inspired by a Fred Perry dress. I made a similar shirt last year. Just that the polka dot & gingham fabrics are used oppositely. (It on my feed if you are interested.) I have a few shirt dress patterns, but the one I reach for the most is #n6449. I’m a fan for using patterns multiple times. It’s quite a loose fit without the belt, but that was the look I was going for. For this make I extended the yoke so it comes further down.
