I like to think I'm a pretty competent at sewing, but as simple as #Simplicity1254 should have been, it was a struggle at times. It's done, it's fine. Both fabrics are from JoAnn's. The outer wool-ish blens was off the clearance rack. The lining is the Adelajda print (it's my favorite print!) on Tana Lawn. That star pin was also from JoAnn's, but it was 70% off and kinda blends the star theme of the lining all together. Now I'm just waiting for winter to return. This coat took a lot for me to finish. A challenging pattern to follow, this really tested my skills. About halfway through I started to get frustrated and started questioning if I even liked the design. This morning I finally finished it off. ❄️I am so happy to share my latest make which is this beautiful and warm wool coat! I made it from heavy wool fabric that I bought at my local fabric store @audiniai_vilnius and used the Simplicity pattern #s1254 for it. Oh, what a journey this was! I have to admit that I almost abandoned this project, and it’s only with the help of my husband and my sewing friend Laura that I harnessed enough patience to actually finish it. Surely, now I am finally happy with the end result and love it dearly. . The story of what was wrong along the way is very long. First of all, I worked on the fitting and fixing the pattern for more than a day, and that is only to stitch 6 seams! All along I ended up narrowing it around the hips by 20 cm!!! Then sleeves were short by 4 cm, so whatever I did, I ended up with somewhat short sleeves still. Lastly, I had to throw the instructions out of the window and install the lining as I saw necessary. . Even though I am so happy and proud that I finished this complex garment, I would not recommend anyone using this particular pattern. I wrote an extensive blog post on my struggles while sewing this coat - you can find it on my blog. There are also many inside finish pictures there. . Regardless of all the misery that this project caused, I learnt so much and I do love the end result! The coat is very warm and cozy. While taking these pictures today it was terribly windy and cold. And I felt warm in it regardless, which, I think, is a very good sign and I will thoroughly enjoy wearing it this winter. Not the least, I love these backgrounds in the pictures, and these are the offices of the company I work in - proud about that either! (Offices are of course empty now due to the lockdown). . Whew! My #s1254 #leannemarshall jacket is officially finished! The jacket is pink broadcloth. I used white with large black polka dots linen for the body lining, upper collar, and pocket accents and a white lining fabric with small black polka dots for the sleeves. It’s fully interlined with white polar fleece. Deviations from the pattern include: 📍Topstitching at front, back, and shoulder seams 📍Accent at pockets 📍Altered waist length 📍Took 1.5” off the hip flare 📍Added 2” to the sleeve length 📍Added a fancy little blingy zipper pull doodad 📍Dramatic alteration of the shape of the shawl collar 📍And of course my obnoxious handmade label I love the huge collar on the coat version I made in black. But when I finished on this one, it felt like “too extra”, and not in a good way. Lol. I may have felt differently about it if I had made the coat length, instead? I’m not sure. So I fussed around with it a while until I figured out how to make it just the right amount of extra for me. #week8 of the #52weeksewingchallenge is completed and submitted! This week’s theme is sew something other than fabric. My interpretation involved sewing sweater knit. Here is version number 4 of #s1254. I love the fit of this pattern so much I can’t stop making new ones! Once again it has a totally new collar style. I also raised the neckline this time, but since I didn’t have a long enough zipper on hand, I added a couple loops and buttons and a hook and eye at the neck. I omitted the center placket that covers the zippers in the others, opting for a contrasting exposed zipper instead. I also replaced the pull with something a little more fun. The collar is the same black ponte as the lining. (Sleeve lining is black jersey.) The lining side looks sharp enough I may even turn it wrong side out and wear it that way on occasion. I almost missed hint three for #secretsewingswap!! My favorite part about sewing is being able to create something unique. Unless it’s specially requested, I never make two things exactly the same. My least favorite is cutting everything out. My favorite tool is my sewing machine. My sewing superpower is taking a pattern and making it into something a bit different. My Achilles heel is invisible zippers, but I finally got a foot for that, so hopefully that improves. The last thing I sewed was one of those patterns I altered. It was my third make of #s1254. (See included pic for all three versions.) The next thing I’m sewing is items for my sister to give as gifts to the people she works with. The bonus was to share pics of my sewing buddies. It’s #week8 (sew something other than fabric) of the #52weeksewingchallenge and I’m doing my fourth (and more lightweight) version of #s1254 in a sweater knit with black ponte lining. This one will get yet another collar change up. I was all excited because I got my horizontal lines all lined up beautifully and trimmed some spots where my raw edges went a little wonky when I first cut the pieces. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself until I discovered THAT GUY. I made a coat! I thought this had Little Red Riding Hood vibes so I went for a walk in the woods in it! 🧶 The pattern is Simplicity #s1254 which has a large feature collar that doubles as a hood. Fabric is 100% boiled wool from @minervadotcom 🧶 This was my first time sewing with wool and my first attempt at a coat. I found it tricky in parts but I think it turned out well. 🧶 The fabric was gifted to me as part of the Minerva brand ambassador programme.
